When Jack started talking about the problem of women history being written by men I remembered a book I’ve read by Svetlana Alexievich called “War’s Unwomanly Face” (or something like that), and it’s a book about the WWII from the point of view of female USSR veterans. It’s a very heavy read and I think it’s not largely available in English, but if someone here knows Russian or finds an English copy I highly recommend it. It is short, but each story is so heavy and triggering that it took me several months to go through, so be careful with it. But also… I think it’s a very important historical piece about the war, because in Soviet Union the WWII was always shown as the period of Soviet glory and strength while all dirty stories were hidden under the rug. Men were celebrating this war, but women experienced something they were never meant to (considering all the conservative views on women at that time), and for them the WWII is another story than what was celebrated
@paulall2213 жыл бұрын
I love that book, it made me weep, had to read it in spanish for a course of oral history. I think the name is “The unwomanly face of war” but I’m not that sure either.
@ProfessorMusice3 жыл бұрын
I read one of Alexievich's other novels, Chernobyl Prayer / Voices From Chernobyl (it's printed in English with two different titles), and had similar reading experience. It's a dark but an important account from voices you don't hear from in history books. I believe Alexievich has a background in journalism which really enriches her work.

hopefully not, in my opinion. :( i dont think Jack would look past the gross stuff he's said and done, but idk. maybe he would.

What a way to build for the new season!!! Netflix should consider sponsoring you to make videos like this, because if i wasn't already obsessed with this show (pls send help) i would probably want to check out now!

I think my life without Jacks Videos wouldn't be the same. I just need a little inspiration and a smile on my face once in a while and Jacks videos give that to me. So thanks for making my day better. I'm going reading now...

The Bell Jar is definitely one of my favorite books soo I literally got so excited when you said that you had no words.

wait is it just me or is someone reading THE BELL JAR in like every movie? I think Dakota Johnson was reading it in ‘how to be single’ & i remember seeing it a lot in a few others? 😅

yes omg just off the top of my head Kat was reading it in 10 Things I Hate About You, Rory Gilmore mentioned it in Gilmore Girls, and Lisa Simpson was reading it too
