I went on this ride once and personally think it's a fantastic ride. The research and development that went into creating the ride, the triggers, vr and actors and all multisensory elements went above and beyond. The Merlin team and external partners did a great job. I think people that say that it's rubbish or boring etc.. maybe because they have ridden it too many times before, they're not experiencing the magic behind it all for the first time. Theme Parks don't always aim to please enthusiasts, but they do a fantastic job thrilling and amusing the general public. I'd have loved to have a second go!

It has no re-ride factor mate...yes its okay for first timers...but you know what to expect second time round...the half decent part about the experience was the fake shop at the end...

This does miss one point, which is reliability. When I went, the second half completely did not work and so never got to experience that part. Queue times was also long, sometimes with pre-booking tike slots being required. But I do agree that they took a risk here by trying something new, and do believe things like this experiment should carry on. Darren brown ghost train is quite unique.

People want so much more these days and it must be difficult to come up with an idea that balances enjoyment and cost. This sort of ride appeals to me because of 3 factors 1) Im terrified of Coasters, never been on one (that 80s horror flick of one coming off the rails and decapitating everyone it hit did it for me) 2) I cant (anymore) ride a spinny round ride due to vertigo, really, I would barf my guts up now, as much as I loved them as a kid. 3) No chance on an up and down one (vertigo) Maybe a nice tea cup or log flume.. wait, no, tea cup, spinning..urggh

This ride (from conception to execution) absolutely baffles me. The getting off half way killed the pacing. I'd only done it once and when we went nothing happened in that corridor (or if it did, we didn't see anything). The concept of a Tube train and the theming of the train is great. This re theme has so much potential. I hope they fix the pacing (i.e you don't get off, or that's simply then end of the ride) and make it atmospheric and improve the capacity.

When it originally opened, the middle bit featured the riders witnessing a train crash (which was an amazing effect when it worked), the ground cracking open (another great effect that only worked intermittently), and finally zombies would attack the riders.

One of the big moments of the ride is during all the getting on and off it doesn’t look like the same train you got on. Some people don’t look back when they first get off so don’t even notice until getting back on that it’s a tube train in the outside. So when you finally leave and it’s backing to being the old cartridge you question how all that happened. Will be interesting to see how they utilise that movement in the new version as of course the cat is very much out of the bag that it moves

As an American, I’m so glad I finally got to see why so many of my British friends complained about this ride. It’s definitely a lot of wasted ideas and improperly used elaborate equipment. This is an amazing video. Thank you so much for sharing it.

i know the ride had a bad rep but I did genuinely enjoy a lot of it. The VR aspect was wonky at best, but I love Derren Brown so much and the potential was there, if not fully utilised. I hope the new Ghost Train improves on it and keeps some of the hidden aspects.

Looks like they modified it slightly than when I last went on it - when moving between trains they had a bit where a fake train was barreling towards you down a tunnel and flashes its lights and horns which caused the biggest scare of anyone on the ride, but now they just have a stationary facade. But the creature in the giftshop also looked like a new addition.

I remember going on this ride a good 3 years ago, I don't understand how so many people had such a bad experience with it. My experience was incredible, there were so many live actors during the middle bit and at the end withe gift shop. Its a shame you didn't manage to capture the entirety of the VR section though

I am so glad I got to ride this version of it. As an American who loves haunted houses, spooky movies, and amusement rodes of all types - this was 1 of my 2 fave rides at Thorpe Park the other being Swarm. May even make it on my top 30 rides of all time for being so unique and thrilling. Slightly sad, I wont get to do this same version again. Though I will try any new version if I get to visit there again.

I went on this ride many years ago and I don't remember ever going through a tunnel? When there was jump scares with the VR headset on the staff would grab your legs to make it even more jumpy. I thought the whole experience was awesome! Gutted it closed down, thanks for the video.

Travelled to the UK in 2019 to do some of the theme parks. Must have gone on the Ghost train on a bad day as not only were my VR headphones not working, but there were no live actors in the middle bit? No staff member or infected taking you through the maze, it was self guided with no smoke or lighting effects. The fake gift shop was definitely the best bit!

I went on this for the first (and now last) time during Fright Nights last year - VR was a bit wonky but still an interesting concept. I'd heard about the fake shop at the end but they seemed to divert us past it during our run; I spotted the photo kiosk as we passed the exit door to that room but wasn't able to get inside to look closer (and was later informed that those photos were on a "separate system" to everything else which is why I couldn't buy them from the app, if indeed they exist at all). Is there any chance of getting some behind-the-scenes footage of the ride? The train mechanism is impressive, but so far I've been unable to find any photos or videos of it from the outside.

I would like to see them play more on the Victorian theme., make the train inside Victorian not modern. And use some video screens on the windows.

it does give gcse drama vibes, it’s not the acting in it’s self i think the acting is appropriate for the range of audience you’ll get on this on this kind of ride, The acting style suggests you are safe the whole way through which is great usually but, I don’t think it really works alongside an illusion & confusion based magic show, darren saying “keep the secret” after the gift shop scene just feels a bit cringey as there wasn’t really anything that made him earn my trust, I think to have a ride where an aspect of it is to keep the secret of it, it needs to not be anti climatic wether it’s talked about or not before going in The idea was there the space looked great, i’m really excited to see what changes, maybe multiple story lines could bring people back?

I found out from employees that under each seat there was a separate pc powering each vr headset, which weren't ventilated well, so hence had a tendency to break down a lot, particularly in hot weather !

Went on it yesterday and there wasn't VR there. What a pity. Might've been much immersive experience than with solely live acting. The idea of it is good, I agree that getting half way off the train kind of ruins it. There is so much potential, hope they develop it further to make it more intense. What I liked about it was that I had no idea what was going to happen. Before I went on it, I thought it was an actual ride with scary characters popping up in the darkness. So the whole thing was surprising and interesting. People should not watch the video before they go on the ride though - that'll spoil the whole thing for them.

I went through the new Ghost Train and compared to this it was really boring just some story about some sobs trying to attain immortality and while the rides aesthetics where nicer with kind of fake advertisement making the setting feel more real and the train looking good and grungy which is more fitting but compared to Derren Brown’s work the story was just a drag and the scare actors on their own just didn’t do it for me

The VR aspect wasn’t around when I was on the ride. The story was rewritten as well. I guess the changes happened because the ride was getting some negative feedback and the licence for hiring Darren Brown expired.

As someone who studies the ins and outs of entertainment design, this experience seems quite awful. I'm assuming Derren Brown is a big name celebrity in the UK, provided that his name and presence is emblazoned throughout the attraction. But I felt like his repetitive inclusion in the experience crippled every aspect of how good or scary this attraction could've been. It's like he's constantly telling you "don't get too involved, it's all fake." His presence repeatedly ripped me out of the story or whatever story they tried to portray. The preshow was waaaaayy too much exposition and it was in direct contrast to what kind of mood they were trying to create. I couldn't understand what the story of the ghost train was or why there was a zombie walking around or why we had on VR helmets in a subway train or why we couldn't breathe the "gas" or why we were on the train or why the subway train was pristine and clean on the inside but detailed like it came from the early 1900s on the outside. There was no who, what, when, where, and why to the story. It was all an inconsistent jumble of moods, textures, effects, and gimmicks that didn't mesh well together to immerse you into its world.

You're seeing the ride at its very worst. When it opened, it was fantastic. It had a lot more effects, a proper story and a whole host of excellent actors. The middle section was a brilliant and scary section with a brilliant effect of a subway train hurtling down the tunnel straight at you and crashing. There was an amazing demon at the end in the gift shop. Over the years, more and more things constantly got stripped out of the ride and the experience was bared back to the pathetic shambles displayed in this video. Such a shame that many people never got to experience this ride as it originally used to be.

This looks kinda lame. I know it’s not the same as actually being there, but still…. The part with the “infected” guy was laughably bad and Derek reminding everyone to “keep it a secret” kills the immersion and reinforces that what we saw isn’t real. It’s a ride.
