After looking at the multitracks I can now say that there actually was 4 guitar tracks. One that played the slide up the 13th fret, one guitar playing the riff with an octaver, one guitar playing the riff an octave under and one guitarsolo track.

Super, thank you! At the end of the bridge I think it is C sharp 7, not C. Anyway, you play the C sharp 😀

Thanks for this. I'm creating backing tracks to play over. Just one thing though; in the bridge, it's a C#7. You actually play it correctly but said it was a C7. Minor detail. I got it. Thanks again!

I picked that signature riff off the CD when it came out (I started out picking off Benson and Ritenour riffs when I got into jazz guitar) and have to gently disagree with your interpretation of it. If you play the original at KZbin's helpful 1/2 speed setting: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n568e6OoZZ58nbM you can hear the notes as this below (as mentioned Lee is playing the riff, with George doing the run of notes down over the top with a matching vocal scat which masks some of the notes so listen for the instances he doesn't play over to fill in the blanks on Lee's repetitive riff...). The second and third time he plays it comes out clearest in the original recording to hear the notes of the riff. Anyway, after the double stop 13s, it's instead Eb, F (on 3rd string possibly played as a hammer on to the F), then C, Cb, B (on 4th string, two pull-offs is how I play them for the chromatic descent), Ab (on 5 string), then a repeated Cb, B (pull of on 4th string again), Ab (on 5th string), then finishing with Ab, F, Ab (on 5th string), B (on 4th string). Later on Lee seems to vary the opening a bit with F, Eb, F, instead of the simpler Eb, F first notes, but it's hard to pick out behind George's vocals. I remember learning to quickly jump the 3rd finger on the F hammer on the 3rd string 10th fret, to immediately jump to 4th string 10th fret C as something new for me, but definitely a Ritnenour style of his to change direction like that with upward movement of the hammer followed by the immediate chromatic movement down on the lower string... A great Captain Fingers riff! Cheers

Of course, at the time we couldn't easily slow down music on CDs like we can today, but I'm leaning now to thinking I was right that his very first opening of the riff starts (after the double stop 13s) instead with a run up of F (5th string), B (4th string), Eb (3rd string) followed by the chromatic run down of C, Cb, B on the 4th string. These guys hated playing one simple riff over and over, so would change a note or two like that to make it more interesting and more fun to play. So it makes total sense Lee would run up to the Eb the first time, then use the Eb, F version...
