The refrain “Jai Guru Deva Om" in “Across the Universe”is a mantra intended to lull the mind into higher consciousness. The words are in Sanskrit. They mean, “I give thanks to Guru Dev" who was the teacher of the Maharishi.

I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again. The Beatles are the greatest gift given to the human race and the world would be an even sadder place without them. Every song is a new gift and not one of those gifts sounds the same.

This is one of John’s most beautiful songs. I love his voice and the dreamy feeling of this song. Jayy, as you have already discovered, the next Beatles song you hear will never sound like the last one you heard. They were overflowing with genius. I will never ever get over John’s senseless murder 😢. Thank you for truly exploring and appreciating this amazing band that I grew up with. Keep up the great work 🌺✌️

Lennon at his lyrical best. After having been in a row with Cynthia while lying in bed. John got up and went downstairs and had these words just start flowing out like an endless rain in to a paper cup. Johns occasional odd measure of 5/4 is used effortlessly in Across The Universe. Though he was never completely happy with how the song was recorded. Feeling slightly put off by what he considered short shift from Paul. John stated he felt Paul sabotaged some of his best songs. The Let It Be Naked version is, in my view, the best version. One of my favorite Beatles track. This is the Phil Specter production. RNB

You beat me to it. I have read that while Lennon thought this was one of his best songs lyrically (it was), he was never satisfied with the multiple attempts by the Beatles to properly record it. On one such occasion, he and Paul actually asked a couple of female fans hanging around outside Abbey Road to come in and add backing vocals. Honestly, some of the basic recordings of this song among the 'Get Back' bootlegs are as good as anything released.

Interesting that you say it sounds like thoughts filling your mind when you can't sleep - this is what John said about writing the song: “The words are purely inspirational and were given to me - except for maybe one or two where I had to resolve a line or something like that. But the words stand, luckily, by themselves. They were purely inspirational and were given to me as 'Boom!' I don't own it, you know, it came through like that..... I was lying next to my first wife (Cynthia) in bed and I was thinking. It started off as a negative song and she must have been going on and on about something. She'd gone to sleep and I kept hearing, 'Words are flowing out like endless streams...' I was a bit irritated and I went downstairs and it turned into a sort of cosmic song rather than, 'Why are you always mouthing off at me?' or whatever, right? I couldn't get to sleep until I put it on paper. It drove me out of bed. I didn't want to write it. I was just slightly irritable and I couldn't go to sleep...It's like being possessed, like a psychic or a medium. The thing has to go down. It won't let you sleep, so you have to get up, make it into something, and then you're allowed to sleep. That's always in the middle of the bloody night, when you're half awake or tired and your critical faculties are switched off.”

A very good reaction to the lyrics there. I'm sure Lennon would have thought your understanding of the words pretty close to what he meant by them.

believe it or not the beatles thought this was a throw away song. they gave it away, FREE, to the charity "the world wildlife fund" who put it on an album with other artists to raise money. phil spector later included his version of the song repleat with mass orchestration on the beatles last album "let it be." there's 3 versions of this song now. the 'let it be" version, the "wildlife fund' version and the version that appears on mccartney's reworking of "let it be" called "let it be naked" that removes all the phil spector influences from those songs. you're hearing the phil specter "let it be" version. its one of my favorite lennon compositions which aptly demonstrates lennon's knack for word play and lyrical imagery. thanks for the video.
