Definitely my favorite song of theirs. Hard to believe it's 51 years old. I dig a fast paced song like this, takes my mind off of everyday troubles. 1970 was a great year for music.

RIP Terry Kath. This was on one of the Chicago albums I had as a teen. It was recorded in quadrophonic, and was best listened to in a room with 4 speakers. The talent this group had is really amazing! Such spectacular sounds from 1970 at the same time the Beatles were pumping out their tunes. A real contrast!

Make Me Smile is part of a larger suite called Ballet For A Girl From Buchannon. It includes 1) Make Me Smile, 2) So Much To Say, So Much To Give, 3) Anxieties Moment, 4) West Virginia Fantasies, 5) Colour My World, 6) To Be Free, 7) Now More Than Ever. Too bad you only played the one song, which is also reprised at the end of the suite in the coda, Now More Than Ever. Playing the collection together is better if you have 14 minutes.

What you heard was actually two songs spliced together by Columbia Records to make a radio single. The opening portion up to and through the guitar solo is "Make Me Smile" and the second part is "Now More Than Ever". Those tracks were the opening and closing of a seven movement suite titled "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon", written by Chicago's trombone player James Pankow for Chicago's second album. The middle of that suite also features Terry Kath's soulful voice on another instantly recognized Chicago hit, "Colour My World". If you can, you should listen to the entire suite in sequence as it flows through many tempo changes, has some instrumental tracks, and each of the seven band members gets to shine. Terry Kath's guitar playing and soulful baritone voice were truly a gift to the musical world that could never be replaced.

This is from Songfacts: This song was written by James Pankow, a founding member of Chicago whose primary instrument is the trombone. What made him smile was the thought of a beautiful relationship. In a Songfacts interview with Pankow, he explained: "Relationships, if they're good, put a big smile on our faces. Love songs have always been a powerful ingredient in the song's process - the songwriting process has often taken writers to that place."

I was surprised to hear on the radio at Walmart today the Chicago song from their 1st album (Questions 67 & 68). Nobody talks about that one but it was one but it really showcased Peter's vocal range and in the studio version Terry's guitar. I do not like the live version. The band went from a hard rock edge to power ballads and there are many hits. Most notable is the one they did with the Fantastic back up harmonies of the Beach Boys called ("Wishing You Were Here.") There is a live version from the (New Years Rockin' Eve Chicago) TV special.

NOOOOOO - That is not the whole song. and you should go back to Tanglewood. The real name is "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" and it's 14 minutes long. Did you notice the jump toward the end of the song when it went from Make Me Smile and jumped to Now More Than Ever at the end? The band had no idea that the record company would cut and paste it the way they did. The company made 2 hit singles out of it. The problem was in 1970 cars came standard with AM radio so AM radio was King and they didn't play anything over 3 minutes long. - Copied and pasted the names of the sections from another comment - " 1) Make Me Smile, 2) So Much To Say, So Much To Give, 3) Anxieties Moment, 4) West Virginia Fantasies, 5) Colour My World, 6) To Be Free, 7) Now More Than Ever" Terry sings and plays it with the same passion you saw in 25 or 6 to 4. -- BE SURE - to get the 14 minute post because others have cut it in half. The 2 songs they made are Make me Smile and Colour my World. Before you saw Peter on bass singing , this time it is Terry with 3 parts and Robert on keyboards singing 1 part. I guarantee that you will love the colour my world part.
