Thank you for the review. I have both the OLED (64 gig RAM) and the IPS versions (32 gig RAM). For the OLED version I get between 6 & 7 hours of real-world use. I get about 10 hours with the IPS screen. My typical use consists of office type work with a dozen or so Edge tabs, several OneNote windows, Outlook, Word, Excel. The OLED screen is much nicer, crisper, with more saturated colors... but it does have low frequency PWM, which does not work for me. I am upgrading from a Carbon X1 Gen 9. The P14S AMD Gen 5 is about a half a pound heavier than the X1, BUT much faster performance, much cooler, with virtually no fan noise (after the initial installations, setup, and full indexing). First AMD systems I have used. By far the best laptop I have used, much better balance between weight, power, speed, fan noise than what Intel currently offers.

Thanks for the review. For laptops, a good aspect to check is the fan noise. That is very important for some people.
@Slap_Tech4 ай бұрын
Thank you. The fan noise shouldn't steer anyone away from this laptop. If you're not doing anything intense like editing or gaming it should be in Battery Saver where the fan will never kick in. When working on a project the fan will spin every once in a while but will never be a bother. While compiling, exporting or gaming the fan noise won't be annoyingly loud and this laptop throttles at exactly 82 degrees, meaning that it won't have to spin all that much to cool the CPU. This data is dependent on using the laptop on a flat surface where there is plenty of airflow to the bottom of the laptop. If playing games in bed while placing this laptop on the bed sheets, your results may vary.

Great review. There is conflicting information regarding the case materials used for the AMD version of the P14s (Gen 5). I know the Intel version is made of mostly aluminum, but some reviewers are saying the AMD version is all plastic, while others are saying it's made with Lenovo's typical mixture of materials (mostly plastic with some CF and other materials mixed in). The PSREF for the P14s AMD Gen 5 shows this for case materials: PC / 50% GF with 30% PCC + PC / 20% CF (top), PC / 40% GF with 45% PCC (bottom) PC / 50% GF with 30% PCC + PC / 20% CF (top), PC / 20% CF with 30% PCC (bottom) They did not indicate what the differentiator between the two is, so this just confuses things further!

Many of the Intel configs of the P14s have an NVIDIA GPU with only 4 GB of VRAM. That’s insanely low, nobody should be buying a PC with this little VRAM in 2024 unless all you ever run is desktop/office apps. That amount of VRAM will struggle in professional 3D apps such as Blender or video editing such as DaVinci Resolve. I already have many projects which require at least 10 GB VRAM.

@Slap_Tech4 ай бұрын
This is an apples to oranges comparison, 14" vs 16". I'd have to take a close look at the L16 to see how much power it delivers to the CPU. If it maxes the CPU out, that's 15 to 20 percent less performance than the P14s. If the L16 doesn't send all 30W to the 7735U, then expect even less performance. As for battery life, they should be about equal. Battery size is similar. L16 = less CPU power draw, larger screen P14s = more CPU power draw, smaller screen The P14s seems like an obvious choice. You can get whatever else you need for it later down the road, be it an external monitor / keyboard / different RAM for dual channel performance. The only reason you should go with the L16 is if you'd prefer a notebook with a large screen and numpad while away from the office, no matter the performance loss.

Glad you like the review! For a battery replacement: Yeah, there's a lack of data out there about a replacement. I'm thinking it won't be possible. I'd be really careful with it too because while the physical size of the batteries should be the same, the connection to the motherboard might be different for the two batteries, rendering an upgrade impossible. Fan noise level: It's not loud at all, but you'll want to be in Battery Saver mode at all times when away from the wall in order to conserve battery life. I don't cover idle time in my reviews because it's the least useful (and in some cases misleading) figure, but it will *idle for 7.5* hours during meetings or classes. Against the IdeaPad Pro 5i: It's an apples to oranges kind of deal, 14" vs. 16". Productivity vs. Gaming. The ThinkPad wins when quiet fan noise and battery life are prioritized, but there are many other 14" laptops that grant lower fan noise and much longer battery life, like the Asus Zenbook 14, which I reviewed here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHe4eYtqbatrp6M
