This was a great illustration of "Protect your crew first." Structures can be replaced a lot easier than trained firefighters. When they found they had a walking fire out of easy reach, they got their people OUT. And made sure they were out before they started up the master stream. It's a pleasure to see folks this professional at work. They contained the fire as best they could and looked like they prevented it from spreading to the neighboring structure, and got everyone out of the fire structure alive. I'd call this an unqualified win.

I'm a firefighter from Northern California, 15 years, EastCoast fire fighting infuriates me. What is it about actually putting out fire from inside the building that East Coast firefighters don't, can't, or won't comprehend? There was absolutely no reason whatsoever to evacuate the structure. Only cowards fight fire from the outside and I do not understand this whole sitting on the ground shit, you will never see that in NorCal. You call it master stream, we call it get the fuck off the ground and go put out the goddamn fire.

It’s nice seeing a OIC really paying attention to what’s going on . Especially when it comes to Smoke , it tells you exactly what a fire is doing . The color , the density and the volume lets you know a lot . You could see in the beginning stages of this video that smoke had Flashover written all over it . I’m glad the OIC called for the emergency evac . He mostly likely saved lives . It’s also up to the crews on the inside getting water on that fire . In this case it sounds like the fire was already in the attic space so that alone will make getting water on the fire difficult. The only thing i really don’t agree with is having guys on that roof hitting hot spots . That roofs integrity is compromised. Why not just use a truck to handle any hot spots on the roof ? Either way great job by all , As much as we try we can’t save them all . Again great job by the OIC . Run the job don’t let the job run you . Stay safe out there
@thejfrd2490
@thejfrd2490 Жыл бұрын
The crews that were on the roof, sounded the roof extensively prior to stepping on it...furthermore, the firewall between the two units did exactly what it was supposed to do, and if you look, the firefighters stay on the unburned side...they were definately not put into a dangerous situation as you see it.

@@thejfrd2490 Absolutely agree, JFRD does things by the book. I've been on a few mutual aid calls to Jax,and many fires with JFRD helping my department and never seen any serious safety issues. We may not save every structure, but the goal is save lives and everyone goes home at the end of shift.

@@thejfrd2490 I hope you don’t think I was taking a shot at this department ? Not by any means. I think everything went great . I was really impressed with the OIC. He’s a lot like my chief . Stays calm Sticks to the basics and pays close attention to detail . And I stand corrected with those guys on the roof . I didn’t realize at first watching this video that they were on the opposite side of the firewall . That definitely changes everything . I still wouldn’t have had them up there . But I feel better about it knowing that firewall was there. I’m all for aggressive firefighting and doing what it takes to save lives and property, I’m just always sketchy when it comes to roof ops and when you have that much fire in the roof area . In those situations I don’t put anyone near a roof . Especially when I have a ladder already in operation . Either way, again great job by all . Stay safe out there .
@chosenone1004
@chosenone1004 Жыл бұрын
@@JB91710 They probably tried , but it looks like this fire had a jump on them before they even arrived . Once that fire got into that attic space it just took off on them 🎉. They probably tired but if you look at those interior conditions it pushed them right back out . At that point it’s just not worth putting anyone in harms way trying to get back inside . The only other way to get to that fire other then an interior attack would be to trench cut that roof . But again , at that point it’s just not worth putting guys up there . Once that fire self vented , put a ladder up and let that master stream handle it . Just like they did .

@@JB91710 our approach was to locate and extinguish the fire...initial crews were hampered with having to rescue one resident that was bed ridden (manpower intensive) the second resident refused to leave, again forcing initial crews to have to deal with more than taking care of the fire...during this time, the hidden fire travelled and progressed. So please enlighten me how the initial approach was wrong. You speak like you were there and know everything that happened and you weren't... Your "know it all " attitude is what gets people hurt and killed...it is easy to sit back and second guess decisions made to feed your own ego...but to anyone who knows the business, you just prove your ignorance.

@@thejfrd2490 0:40 this is what is called, Being Observant. 1. Equipment is step up with lines pulled including a supply line. Ladders have been set which are accomplishing nothing. That takes TIME! MINUTES!!! 2. In all that Time, there have to be firefighters already inside dealing with the victims. 3. I count at least 10 firefighters in this sequence, and not ONE of them addressing the fire. 4. 0:24 That ladder nozzle could have been hitting that gable end vent and cooling the attic so the fire couldn't extend. 5. They have lines at their feet that one person could be directing at the soffit vents. All that from one still picture. That fire could have been controlled until an interior crew could have gone through the ceiling. I know how the human mind works at that Low end of the work scale. If there are victims to "Save," firefighting goes right out the window. The fire gets bigger and the adrenaline rush increases. That's why I say, a firefighter's mind set has to be on Protection by eliminating the threat first, because it is faster than getting fully dressed, assembling an entry team, getting the door open and then searching through a smoke filled and unfamiliar house to find victims when you have no idea where they are. Stop fighting me and LEARN SOMETHING!

As a firefighter and officer (retired after 35 years), I'd like to commend JFRD for this job well done. Command was well disciplined, cool and calm and effective. Also, the search/rescue teams and interior attack teams performed exceptionally. Steady and disciplined execution. (Slow is smooth, Smooth is Fast). This type of fireground efficiency doesn't just happen on its own. It is the result of 100"s+ hours of continuous training, practice, along with a culture that everyone on the dept owns. Did all that horse shit you spouted out make you feel better about yourself? Are you even commenting on This fire or some other one? Do you mean with 35 years of experience you couldn't have vented those windows and gotten hoses up the stairs to the second floor and stopped the fire before it burned the roof off? Fires are supposed to get smaller after the department arrives. Also, firefighters are not supposed to willingly allow themselves to get into hopeless and useless situations where they have to bail out in a life-or-death panic. My God you fit right in.

One of the things I always wanted to experiment with during my career was piercing nozzles. These fires in the attic can run very quickly if you don't catch it early or act aggressively. When it does get ahead or so you don't have to immediately open a ceiling dropping the smoke into possible rescue areas why not put piercing nozzles through the roof. The ceiling remains intact a little longer buying interior crews time. It could also cool the area enough to possible prevent smoke explosions. They could be deployed quickly with minimal placement of men on the roof. They could also preserve the integrity of the trusses if done quickly. Just a thought.

@@thejfrd2490 I fought fires in the Navy while serving on the USS America CVA-66 while in Vietnam and on until 1979. Once had to fight a fire wearing three piece suit and tie when they stopped us from going to dinner on the shore. We had three fires at the same time due to an arson (his wife told him that if the ship went to sea again, she was leaving him). On board ship its just us. The local fire department doesn't come to help. Firefighting fires on board ship is much harder. Everything is concealed spaces. So instead of the fire going upwards, it goes everywhere and on us. When fires broke out it was all hands on deck. We geared up and hurried to put the fire out. We can't just stand around and wait or we will lose our ship and have nowhere to go while at sea.

Out of curiosity, why were all the windows being broken out on the second floor. Wouldn’t that feed the fire and create new flow paths for the fire to travel? In the time it took to break all the windows, the aerial was never utilized either. Maybe there’s a good explanation, I’m just confused. At the end of the day though, looks like the fire is out and everyone is safe. Good work fellas!
@straytrons3450
@straytrons3450 Жыл бұрын
Once the fire vents vertically you want to keep the fire flow going that way. It also helps the FF's in the structure by reducing heat load, provides a known fire path, and gives ground lines a point to get water in the structure. The ladder pipe can't be put into operation until all the FF's are out of the structure. Hitting someone with that water stream will hurt them and can cause structural collapse. Depending on the apparatus these flow between 300 and 1000 gal's a min. That is enough water to pin someone to a wall or the ground.
@JoshK589
@JoshK589 Жыл бұрын
@@straytrons3450 I fully agree that you should never operate an aerial master stream while you have FF’s inside, but I thought the IC called for a full evac of both floors.

@JoshK589 The windows were not being broken out until the order to get out was given...if you look at the intensity of the smoke at that time, the upstairs was ready to flash and it was hot with no visibility...getting the smoke out at this point was important as crews were still getting out...this helped with heat, visibility, and chances of flashover. Also, once the structure is not occupied, it gives outside crews a place to shoot water to try and darken it down more effectively.

It is a complex problem. To build houses that don’t burn to the ground within a matter of minutes, would make them even more expensive than they are. They are already so expensive most people can’t afford to buy one. We have a housing shortage that is getting worse. It is much worse in some places than others. An area with a fast growing population is especially bad. Multi family dwellings can’t keep up either. Something has to change in materials or construction, probably both, that can make them more resistant to fire. How many void spaces are in this structure? That makes design and engineering important factors. Fixing it is all hands needed with ideas and insight to see which ideas are better than others. Because of the vast differences in climate and other factors, this is not a one solution fits all kind of problem. The one thing that cannot be denied is that what is happening in new condition now doesn’t result in resilient housing. They are a hazard to residents and firefighters.
@lindanwfirefighter4973
@lindanwfirefighter4973 Жыл бұрын
@@enid0mom They do not need to be fire proof. We need full dimension lumber and not all this thin lamented engineered crap that fails so very quickly. The further things get from natural materials into engineered materials the weaker they are when impinged by fire. Heck even strawbale houses are far safer than most modern homes. We have hours to work with in a strawbale house fire. We have to put markers on houses that are engineered or retrofitted with engineered materials so everyone knows when they arrive on scene.
@enid0mom
@enid0mom Жыл бұрын
@Cessna Driver Where in the world did I say we could/should build *fireproof* buildings? My exact words were “…more resistant to fire.” That is a big leap to fireproof. A bank vault might be fireproof but I don’t see how any dwelling, single or multi family, could be fireproof. The closest we get to fireproof is buildings like hospitals with doors rated to resist fire for a very long time that deploy when an alarm is set off. That confines the fire to one section. Apartments are built to compartmentalize the apartments as long as residents don’t do anything to compromise the design like leaving doors open. Look how fast the roof failed in this house. A house built before prefab trusses made from engineered wood came along would take much longer to fail. That is time for people to get out safely and even save a precious heirloom. They give firefighters more time to use aggressive tactics. They might be strong against hurricane strength winds, but not fireproof. Japan has proven that it is possible to make buildings virtually earthquake proof, but not tsunami proof.
