Subtitles can never justify this lyrics. Coz we can't expect rhyming words in subtitles it's impossible. But if you listen to the song without subtitles you can understand the rhyming in every sentences not in simple lame way. Even the words he used are so rare from the colloquial Tamil we use, for e.g for cloud in Tamil we say megham. But he used the word mughil which also means cloud but it's very beautiful word. And also many flowers name he used in this song like kondrai poo, kuvalai poo we have no idea existed. Unfortunately only a native speaker can understand the supremacy of this lyrics. Genius work that's why vairamuthu has record for most national awards for lyricist in the entire nation among all languages lyricists. That record will be unbreakable forever.

Kondrai poo... We know it from Lord Shiva... His garland is of that... Also, Kondraivendhan literature by Tamil poetess Avvaiyaar... (Kondraippoo, Kuvalaipoo, Senkaanthal, and Thaazhampoo are all known by Tamilians rooted in culture. It is a sad thing that the current generations don't give a damn about culture though...)

Yes exactly , it’s same with Telugu language as well in fact in Telugu rhyming of the lyrics in the song fits perfectly than one in Tamil , because it’s a poetic song& Telugu language has huge vocabulary & have rich history of poets when it comes mostly all romantic genres Tamil songs which are composed in Telugu are much better Tamil language , but in the other Genres TAMIL lyrics synced perfectly compare to the song which is composed in Telugu , some times you can feel it . ARR has always played with blending seemingly incongruous elements with the traditional and conventional expectations of the listener, contrasting the mellow classical based voice and tune that Hariharan sings in with the carefree modern drawl that Clinton provides in the chorus. It actually reflects the attitudes of the boy and girl in the movie and is saying the story through music. That is why Rahman’s music is so powerful and contextual to the movie. If not for the chorus, the song will be rich but a tad classical and monochromatic. It wouldn’t reflect the dichotomy in the characters’ attitudes. They defy convention in the movie and Rahman does the same in the song! .

This is honestly one of the best songs of ARR. To your point of calling her friend, the female lead also has a song dedicated to the male lead calling him a friend but a secret friend 😅 the song is called Snehithane! Slight context to why the male lead is excited shouting at the beach, these two used to travel in trains that goes in two different ways, they used to look at each other and finally the guy tries to initiate a conversation with the lady and she smiles at him. This is what he screams at the beach! That she looked at me and smiled! By the time this happens both of them are attracted to each other already. This is one of the most beautifully written song as to how colors could cleverly be used to describe the female character as well as the emotions that he or she has towards each other. This comment is gonna be a bit long and I have some free time lol! since the subtitles didn’t do justice, here is a breakdown of all the metaphors the character makes of the female character in terms of the Color. Green- the Color of-or that evokes desire, grass, budding leaves, your vein- all of them gives male lead a green signal to go ahead with loving the female lead. Red- Color that you see in beak of a parrot, tongue of someone who chews betel leaves(this is a thing people chew on and mouth becomes red), a newly blossomed rose, baby’s feet which is yet to land on the ground, and all the reds in the world make up the Color of your anger😅 Yellow- Color of-evening sky during sunset, flame, golden earrings, Gulmohar flower and even the subtle yellow of the evening moon and everything is what her heart is made. Basically he’s saying her heart is made of gold 😅 The chorus basically means love has so many colors and so does his love interest Blue- Color of- waveless sea, cloudless sky, nape of the peacock, blue water lily, type of a butterfly pea flower and every blue reflects in her eyes. Black- Color of- night, darkness during rains, wings of a crow, kohl lined eyes of a woman, songbird cuckoo’s color and all the blackness of her hair. White- Color of a flower that blossoms during rains, whites of eye, and the color of her heart meaning how pure it is! 😅 I am pretty sure this might seem too random but it fits the scene perfectly and that the actual Tamil lyrics are beyond magical. This song was beautifully shot and I wish we had a 4K version of it because this is a perfect amalgamation of beautiful lyrics, soulful music and ethereal visuals. Not to mention how at the time everyone of us wanted both the actors to be a thing! And Madhavan was at his prime during this time!
