Having grown up on my family’s farm, surrounded by other family member’s farms…domesticated sheep are crappy parents (it’s a complicated cycle of “abandonment”). So when we kids were out playing/working on the farms (depending on the time of year), it was very common to have a few extra fleece-y playmates following us around everywhere. ❤️💖

11:10 Yes, as someone who owns sheep, that is very accurate. One of my sheep accidentally stepped on her lambs and broke their leg. The lamb is alright now and the mother was a new mother and she learned eventually, and did become a bit more loving. But that was just so scarily accurate 😂

Even if there wasn't a "dark origins" this poem always had a personal dark twist, because of my mother. She grew up on a farm, and told me a story about how she adopted a baby lamb, whose mum was hit by a truck; becoming "a real life Mary". (This would have been in the 60s) I dont think this lamb followed my mother to school, nor am I implying connections, but I guess even without knowing the origins, my mother's story always grounded the song for me. Still, very cool to finally learn more. Thank you. Edited for typos, dammit autocorrect!!

I’m a 76 year old descendent of the Sawyer family. My grandmother was born Magarette Sawyer born in 1887 in West Sterling, Massachusetts and was raised in the family homestead. Needless to say the “Mary Sawyer had a Little Little Lamb” story was repeated often in our family. Sorry to hear the family home no longer exists however the last of Sawyers left West Sterling in the 1940s. I have several relics from the old place only because my mother treasured her memories of summers spent with her grandparents in Massachusetts. Thanks for your narrative as I enjoyed hearing the stories once again.

Another great vid, of course. JonSolo nails it every time. Scrooge McDuck caught my eye today but I didn't realize it because I thought the figure was Donald Duck but in some attempt at a Cinderella-like gown with foil. The thing I couldn't reconcile was the striped "top". Then I saw the white "tufts" of hair (or feathers? Idk there's no use for trying to apply logical assessments into a friggin cartoon) and it clicked for me: that was Scrooge McDuck swimming in his money. It was a crazy 1.5min rollercoaster for me.

Well, I'm impressed with the research you put into this, as well as the examination of the conflicting origin stories and possible explanations. Thank you. (But I do question the pronunciation of the word "subsequent".)

Over here in Wales, the story goes Mary lived in Llangollen. Mary Hughes(nee Thomas) was followed to school by her pet lamb. The school teacher Miss Coward, had the lamb tied up by a tollgate near the school. Three sisters named Burls visiting from London, were so amused by the story one of them penned the rhyme when they got back home. This would have happened in the mid-1840's as Mary was born in 18 May 1842. She died at the age of 91 and is buried in Worthing , England. It's not certain why Mary thought the rhyme was about her or if the Burls sent her a copy of the poem they had read. But I always point Mary's house to friends and family when we're walking in the area. Also Jon what about the Mabanogion; Giant talking heads, man hanging a pregnant mouse (yes, pregnant!) and visits to the other realm.

I used to walk to school when I was a kid. My dog did follow me to school one day! He walked far enough behind me that I didn’t notice until was actually in my classroom! The kids called me Mary for a bit :)

Growing up in the 90s we would say it as "Mary had a little lamb, she ate it with mint jelly, and everywhere that Mary went, the lamb followed, in her belly".

Maybe someone saw the reference to Henry Ford as a historian and didn't get far enough in to realize where this was going? (Ford was pretty famous for being an antisemite and eugenicist.) Or for a boring answer: Sometimes I have noticed that I (or my butt) have mashed the wrong button on the phone, so maybe it was an accident.

I only thumbs down because of the click bait. I do not like lies. I am not subbed either. Censortube just put it in my feed so I checked out the video. Only losers lie to get more clicks though. So Jon really has no room to talk. I feel bad for him though that he needs to have click bait for anyone to even check out his videos. :P

Mary had a little lamb, Its fleece was black as soot. And everywhere that Mary went, its sooty foot it put. In the UK we have a number of other variants that are a tad too blue to repeat here.
