Hypnos is one of those gods who could wreck literally everybody's lives if he wasn't so chill. He's described as being a calm and gentle god who is very happy to lend a hand to mortals with their sleeping problems. He can literally jump into your sleeping brain and do whatever the hell he wants - make you forget things, give you misleading or prophetic dreams, whatever - when you're asleep, you're his bitch lol. (In the Iliad, I think) Hyonos gets away with putting ZEUS to sleep - TWICE (first time thanks to Mummy, second time Zeus didn't even know what had happened and nobody told him lol). And that's not the craziest part - the sleep he put Zeus into was SO deep, it was like DEATH (fitting, since Thanatos is Hypnos's twin). Hypnos stopped all mental activity in Zeus's brain. It's a shame Hypnos isn't featured more in mythology - it'd be sick to see a story where he gets pissed at someone, just to see what he'd do! Edit: I also love that in the Hades game there's a reference to Hypnos's power - he puts the entire house to sleep, Hades included.

Here I shall quote Hesiod’s Theogony: “And the former of them (Hypnos) roam peacefully over the earth and the sea’s broad back and is kindly to men; but the other (Thanatos) has a heart of iron, and his spirit within him is pitiless as bronze; whomsoever of men he has once seized he holds fast; and he is hateful even to the deathless gods.”

A suggestion: how do you feel about talking about fictional works encompassed with greek mythology? I am reading Circe right now and it is amazing how well the author weaves the myths together in a cohesive manner while changing some details to keep it interesting and create a original narrative.

Off topic but not… this is exactly what I loved about the once upon a time show. They found incredible ways to connect and intertwine the fairy tales together

@@hanns115 me too. I get that it dragged around season 5, but I like how they made the fairytale characters evolve. For example, the frozen season was mixed, but I like how they wrote Elsa. Even though her voice was monotone and kind of cold like the original, she did not run away from being queen. Instead of Anna trying to save Elsa, Elsa went hell and back for Anna making mistakes along the way. She was loyal to her loved ones and willing to accept help which the original Elsa did not do. I can go on an in about Anna too, but this post is longer than you may want to read.
@hanns1153 жыл бұрын
@@gabrielleduplessis7388 I agree, the plot really started to drag on in season 5 but they still managed to entangle new characters into it. I personally also loved the 7th season. I know most people thought it completely unnecessary but I loved it because I personally loved the idea of all the same fairy tale characters but different versions from different realms because it could be infinite possibilities that way
@gabrielleduplessis73883 жыл бұрын
@@hanns115 i liked season 7 for the premise as well, but do not understand the different versions of the original characters like cinderella. What made rapunzel fun was we only saw her once and then she transformed into the step mother or characters like Naveen and Tianna that we have not seen it. I also shipped ivy and Henry and wrote fan fiction based off that. Her dynamic with Anastasia was interesting too, but if they were new characters vs. the Cinderella ones, I may have liked them more. Seeing Zelena with Robin and seeing Alice too was priceless.

The second one are the children of Hypnos/Somnus including Phobetor, Phantasos and Morpheus. And it makes sense. Since these 3 only appear in Ovids Methamorphoses it takes place after the trojan war and after Aeneas founded rome. So after Hypnos married Pasithea.

Hyginus (a Roman author) lists Hypnos (technically it's Somnus) as the son of Erebus and Nyx, although most authors did list him as a son of Nyx and Nyx alone. It is listed in the Genealogiae of Hygnius, usually called the Fabulae Preface. It says "From Nox (Night) and Erebus [were born]: Fatum (Fate), Senectus (Old Age), Mors (Death), Letum (Dissolution), Continentia (Moderation), *Somnus (Sleep)* , Somnia (Dreams) [i.e. the Oneiroi], Amor (Love)--that is Lysimeles, Epiphron (Prudence), Porphyrion, Epaphus, Discordia (Discord), Miseria (Misery), Petulantia (Wantonness), Nemesis (Envy), Euphrosyne (Good Cheer), Amicitia (Friendship), Misericordia (Compassion), Styx (Hatred); the three Parcae (Fates), namely Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos; the Hesperides."

I absolutely love you, I do, and I've watched you for so long, but as a greek and as a former linguistics student I have to tell you... In greek, whenever there is an "oi" in a word or name, especially if it's at the end, it's always plural, and especially because it's plural, "o" and "i" makes an "ee" sound. We don't read it as two sounds, it's a unified sound that would be close to the way you would pronounce "ee" in "sleep"... XD So Moirai, Oneiroi and any other "oi" you encounter in greek mythology, it's usually one "ee" sound ;)

Great job as always I especially like the fact you challenged the list of sons and went back to original writing to find out. Do a list of the most powerful weapons in Greek mythology does good then you do other mythologies.
