Hello Dave, thank you for this great Orton tutorial. I have been using the TK8 smart Orton for landscape and flower pictures. For me, the key learning point of this video was how you used the un-blur mask to control the relative sharpness of an image. Somehow, I never used the un-blur mask in the past but I can see the potential of using this feature. Tony Kuyper really did a masterful job when he developed the TK panel.

Happiness is TK Friday! This tutorial is another great chapter in your TK Friday tutorial series. As always, I learns a few new tricks. Maybe some time you can do a TK Friday tutorial abound Frequency Separation. I have seen multiple tutorials on FS and I am still confused. I am sure with your excellent teaching style, you will provide easy to understand instructions. Of course hats off to Tony K for creating the TK panels. Thanks Dave!!!

Another excellent tutorial. I have one major comment. A really good Orton transform has a gossamer or almost Vaseline like effect. What you see is the muted sharpness with a glow. I found the one change that made the big difference for me. Instead of "pass-through" change to "normal" or" luminosity." Then I get the exact effect I'm looking for. Preserving all the detail with the warmth and glow of an Orton effect.

Thank you, Dave. You'd think that since the blur radius is a simple calculation, the TK plugin should be doing that and setting the result as the default value (unless there's some kind of technical limitation).

Hi Dave, Nice video on vignettes and spotlights. Interesting that you did not use the TK8 panel for this. I assume its the same as using freehand vignette and the spotlight actions in TK8, yes? I like the painting approach also. It helps when only wanting to vignette part of the image too. Thanks for a helpful lesson.
@jvalenta47 Жыл бұрын
Great tutorial Dave. I do not see why to use Orton on most of my landscape images. We try to sharpen pictures and then add blur to it? You can add that glow with modifying colors with masks and not to blur the picture. But yes, there are some images to benefit from Orton, like to add some artistic expression to it. Just my thoughts.

When adjusting (say) Opacity, rather than the two step process you show, just click and hold on the word 'Opacity' and drag.

That is the way I do it and usually do that on my videos but I wanted to make sure viewers were understanding how to change the opacity. Good point.

Good day Dave. Thank you again for your great instruction video's. I really learn a lot from you. I have two questions; 1) You showed us the formula for calculating the Gaussian blur. This way of calculating is only used for the Orton effect? Or can you use the formula every time you use the Gaussian blur? 2) I am little Jealous about your 'before and after' action. Would you mind sharing with us this action? Looking forward to next TK-Friday.

Very well explained Dave. Personally I can’t see why one would want to blur an landscape image; we want sharp images. Does TK need both types of Orton; normal and smart? Surely the smart version can be adjusted to create the desired effect as it’s more flexible. Having just one Orton would free up space in the panel for another action. The effect might be useful to soften clouds or perhaps water.
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly Жыл бұрын
I do find that I use both of the Orton's. I like the basic Orton for hand painting on the effect.
@TonyKuyper Жыл бұрын
Smart Orton can give you the Orton effect in terms of color w/o the blur that's normally associated with it. Many landscape images might benefit from this color boost while only adding minimal or no blur.
@billmarson5378 Жыл бұрын
Just found this tutorial. Thank you Dave! Quick question on the Basic Orton affect (or Smart Orton for that matter) . I know you have demonstrated how to add a luminosity mask on top of the final effect to target highlights/shadows/midtones as per your liking. But is it also possible to use the Camera Raw Filter on top of the overall/top Orton layer itself to say, for example, pump up the Luminance/Saturation of that effect, then target it via the luminosity mask?
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly Жыл бұрын
Yes. Make sure the Orton Group layer is the active layer. You can click on ACR and make adjustments and then attach any kind of mask to the ACR result that you would like. I would suggest deleting the Orton Group because you won't need it anymore. The image you took into ACR will have had the Orton effect already applied to it. The Orton effect Group may interfere with your adjustments.

This is a very useful tutorial. Thank you. I am happy Tony provided the formulas for the starting point for the number of pixels. You have done a tutorial on NIKs Glamour Glow. I would be very interested in your very thorough approach to NIK and TK8 to compare Glamour Glow v the Orton effect. How are they different? When might one be better than the other?

Hi Dave, Wow!! That was a Masterclass in using TK8 for Orton. I have to admit I've been using actions I've created after watching other tutorials as I didn't understand how to get the best out of the TK8 actions. I find the contrast to be too heavy in the Smart Orton action by default but now I know a lot more on how to reduce that effect. I find that with the regular Orton effect, applying a Lights 1 or 2 mask and dropping the opacity to around 22% usually gets me to where I want the effect to be for my tastes (just a light effect). The PDF downloads are really useful each week and I also save the videos I find most useful into a playlist so thanks for all the great tips and advice you give us. One question I have (sorry for the long comment!) - in many of the weekly TK8 tutorials, the stamp visible button is used which greatly increases the file size especially if used multiple times. Any advice on how to reduce thesize of the psd/psb files apart from removing the layers which have been stamped (I'm reluctant to do that until I'm 110% certain I'll not need to tweak the previous layers)? Just adding the Smart Orton effect to an edit on a 45MP image easily bumps up the file size to around 1.5GB on disk. Thanks again for a cracking tutorial - another one! - and I look forward to next Friday's installment!

Thanks AlwynG. I found this while doing an internet search on reducing file size: design.tutsplus.com/articles/how-to-make-your-photoshop-file-size-smaller-best-tips-and-tricks--cms-34844 I just glanced over it but some of these ideas may be helpful.

@@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly thanks for getting back to me Dave, I really appreciate that. I looked at that webpage and tried using the suggestion to save as a layered TIF file but my 1.1GB file grew to 1.2GB, I tried adding a white layer but it made no difference...then I looked at the layers in my image and by replacing the soft pop layers (from the TK8 action) with a vibrance adjustment layer and adding a simple Orton effect (using my own action) I was able to bring the file size down to 534MB with very little, if any, noticeable difference between the images. I think the issue is the soft pop effect creating a smart object which then almost doubled the file size. It's an interesting topic though...food for thought for a future video perhaps? Thanks so much again for your reply, it's really great that you get back to your subscribers. Have a great day and I can't wait for tomorrow's video, whatever the subject!

Dave - another very informative video. I was not fully aware of how and why it makes sense to adjust the layers inside of each of the groups created by these actions. A question - to my knowledge this is the first time you mentioned a formula for chaining the default radius of the blur filter. Would this "rule" also apply when the blur filter is activated by other TK actions, e.g. when using frequency separation?
@TonyKuyper Жыл бұрын
The blur for Frequency Separation is quite different, and there is no formula. With Frequency Separation you want to set the blur to remove the texture or color of whatever annoying item you're looking to remove with this technique. Weather it is a skin blemish or footprints on a sand dune, you should set your blur so its texture and/or color is no longer a distraction. That way you'll be able to use the frequency separation layers to easily clone away that item. For small items, like skin blemishes, only small blurs are needed. For larger items, like footprints, a larger blur is necessary. So, there is no formula. You need to set the blur based on what you're seeing in the image.
@stevedirector4644 Жыл бұрын
@@TonyKuyper Thanks Tony - this is helpful. That is how I have been setting the blur for frequency separation but Dave's video got me thinking about formulas for blurs in general!

Multiplying 60Mpx by 125% gives 75Mpx. Drop the reference to megapixels and you are correct. To illustrate, if you had 60 million dollars to invest and I offered you a return of 125%, would you be happy to only get $75?
