I just wanted to comment (as a disabled person) that emotional support animals and service animals are different things, and it is actually ableist for ESAs to be treated as service animals and can actually be dangerous. there are service animals for psychological disorders, but ESAs do not have public access and do not have to be trained to like service dogs. i love your podcast and listen to it every week. I just wanted to educate u guys on that, after hearing your reaction to the hot take

I think there’s a lot of distinctions btwn ESA and SA mainly to do with allowing them into buisinesses. I think of ESA I think of at home support, I think of SA I think of “in the world” support and there is definitely a distinction btwn “I need this animal to feel safe” and “I need this animal to be safe” agree with you whole heartedly and while calling ESAs “not a service animal” can be harmful fir those who genuinely need the psychological help it’s more harmful for them to be allowed into spaces that are typically only for dogs that have genuine training and schooling like SA that assist with mobility or not-visible disabilities like seizure and other warning animals that are trained to be exposed to a lot more of the world.

I came to the comments to add to the fact that emotional support animals and service animals are two different things. It's a really important distinction to the disability community. A great creator that talks about why this is so important is Molly Burke. She is blind and talks a lot about her experience as a service dog used and why that's an important distinction.
