@@Czesin there are moments where weight is played for emphasis, like when Ruby fights against Harriet you can see she’s carrying it with weight to it- it’s more that Ruby as a character has grown both physically and mentally (to handle her weapon better), and there’s emphasis put into weapon momentum in favour of particles and whatnot. Monty Oum’s death though played an obvious part in the switch but in my opinion i like the style more.

Imagine a world where instead of waiting nine or 10 months to see new content, we wait between 13 and 14. Imagine that there are only four or five volumes left before this series is finished. Given the state of the world and working conditions and the obvious delay, I would love if this amount of time in between seasons, volumes, whatever you wanna call them, could get more treatment and love. For the story, for the animation, just to make sure things end with a bang. I’ve seen a lot of videos from people on KZbin and sometimes they come up with pretty interesting ideas and directions to story could take. Some of this stuff Hass to be going on in the heads of the creators as well. But who knows where things are headed. The end volume eights was… Unexpected. And definitely polarizing. But I would really love to see this series end on a good note. Or at least a satisfactory one that people could agree on. More time can make that happen.

The war scythe is accurate. Mostly because a regular scythe is a gardening tool. The shape of a regular scythe doesn’t translate to a weapon well because if you do a downward slash with a scythe the cutting surface of it gets smaller because of the curve. Also, the blade of a regular scythe is curved so far forward that after a successful strike, the blade would probably get stuck in your target. A war scythe keeps the forward curve of the blade, but makes it closer to a spear or sword. The point is more in line with the shaft, making thrusting easier and have more power. The cutting area of a strike doesn’t get smaller as you swing either because the blade doesn’t have as severe of a curve. Ruby’s scythe would technically be more effective as a weapon if it was in war scythe mode more often.

I watched a video of a woman cutting her grass with a scythe, and it was amazing! But it also made me realize just how not effective it is as a weapon to defend yourself. Maybe it's just me, but war scythes just look like someone messed up making a spear and made the blade too long. lol!

This breakdown reminds my why I fell in love with this show, and how far it's fallen. I know it's inappropriate to invoke Monty's specter when talking about the direction the story has gone, but there are key elements to the process that have faded away in later seasons, for sure, and I feel like this trailer demonstrates a lot of them. Color (as you pointed out with the reds) is so important in all of the trailers, but the later into the show you get the less color theory comes into anything. Stories not conforming to their fairy tales (Red Riding Hood absolutely butchering her wolves, instead of falling victim to them, Beauty leaving the Beast, etc), instead of perfectly mirroring them (Cinder, Penny, etc) or completely ignored (Emerald never even meeting Jinn, or, like, Anything with Watts...). Action with pacing and storytelling, where even standing in a field mattered to the character instead of just being easier to animate. I miss what this show could have been. Thank you for such a deep and impassioned video on this trailer, and I can't wait for you do to others. Your content is always amazing, and I look forward to more of it. ^.^

I love the use of the weight of Crescent Rose during the trailer. How it slows Ruby down and seeing how she works around it, using the impact of her bullets to move herself around. I really do miss the weapons having weight especially with Crescent Rose. I think that's why her combat has been so lackluster in recent volumes. They've made Crescent Rose so heavy that Ruby is too slow but also so lightweight that its hits lack impact. The recoil of Crescent Rose gave her strikes that extra flare and push to capture the eye. Since that's gone, Ruby gets quickly and quietly pushed off screen so they don't have to figure out how to make her combat look good. Makes me sad cause Ruby had my second favorite fighting style(she was just behind Pyrrha and Weiss) On a lighter note though, seeing how Crescent Rose is inspired by Qrow's scythe, I like to think she didn't realize how heavy her scythe would be in order to do the same amount of damage. In an effort not to sacrifice damage output, she developed her fighting style and the war scythe form leading to her weapon obsession as she did research to create her own weapon.
@AndorRadnai
@AndorRadnai 2 жыл бұрын
I am quite sure that Qrow‘s scythe is lighter than Crescent Rose. He is also physically stronger than her and the weapon has most likely been honed and perfected over the years. The craftsmanship is naturally much better. Thus Qrow can more effectively duel with other fighters wielding it, whereas Crescent Rose really isn’t meant for that. I would love to see Ruby training to master these flaws into an effective fighting style, using the weapon’s weight and momentum rather than twirling it around as if it was truly made out of plastic, but still cumbersome and slow.

Excellent video! I also think this trailer gives an example of a time retconning was done well. The explanation that Ruby could demolish these Beowolves because they were super fresh, as evidenced by their lack of the Grimm's distinctive yellow eyes and white bony armor, serves to both maintain our opinion of Ruby's abilities "yo, she wrecked those werewolf looking things" while also preserving the idea that the Grimm could be a threat later when we see their canon forms "yo, these look like armored super werewolves, these must be more dangerous than the ones from the trailer". Rather than directly contradicting the trailer, the show/its wiki expanded and grew what we had seen (up until the Grimm dragon bled armored Grimm and we saw armored Beowolves climb out of slime pits, but the show doesnt explain all of its mechanics, so we can shelve those). I too miss the weight of Crescent Rose, even in Vol 1; when she shows it off to Jaune, the heft seems off, and when the team shoots at the Giant Nevermore in episode 7, she doesnt plant the blade like she does in this trailer, and I miss that distinctive bit of flavor. Thanks, Critter!

honestly, I think critter's description's of the animation and how it all flows and works is what I think the writers have lost over the years, this is why Monty was so good at it, he knew what he needed to do to make things pop and grab out eye and keep us on the screen. now days the writers just want a fight scene they don't necessarily know how to catch our eye and keep us there like Monty did, its perfect. honestly, the term of "making a fight scene more like a music video" might be what the writers are missing to make the fights that LITTLE bit more interesting, instead of the v8 fights. also the hit FX? I think they need to bring that back, only add those effects when something lands a blow, and make it colour coded instead of just flashes of white from everyone at any given time cause it can hide a lot of character movement for no reason.

A little bit of insight on the war-scythe bit: ye it accurate to call it one. The shape of the blade itself is what determines a scythe rather than the angle of it in relation to the pole. When they were first used for harvesting crops, scythe's were extremely impractical for combat due to the angle of the blade preventing proper use in a fight(extremely hard to cut things and the blade would get easily stuck when used to stab), so when using a scythe blade when making a weapon the angle of the blade was changed to allow for easier cleaving and stabbing, this was called a war-scythe and is likely what the alternate mode is supposed to be. Tldr: I'm a medieval weapon nut and to give a bit of info about the war-scythe. Anyone reading have a nice day Edit: wait someone beat me to saying this my bad

Even with such mundane weaponry, (even if Watts has a 20+ round revolver) the use of terrain, momentum with Ironwood's shots and movement made me smile. Ironwood is a battle tested warrior, that can think tactically and utilize immense strength to ragdoll his opponent, Watts is a brilliant mind but not very physically imposing. Without a doubt the best fight scene in RWBY. The fight choreography is timeless but it's a shame that it's shown it's age in other ways. Like how the wolf growls are insanely low quality or how the Grimm can look really janky when running or how they don't actually look like the Grimm we see in the show. I would absolutely love to see this fight remade in the new engine with the more interesting Grimm designs while not touching the animation at all besides fixing a couple mistakes. People have tried to recreate it before but it always ends up being lackluster due to how much was changed. I'm just dying for new RWBY content that matches the quality of the red trailer.

An aspect of Ruby's fighting that I've always enjoyed for its creativity is when crescent rose is stuck in the ground and Ruby uses it like a pommel horse, twirling around, kicking enemies. It was only briefly used in this fight and doesn't show up too much after. Just a very cool aspect that just made sense the first time I watched it.

One of the things that made Monty's choreography so good was that he was a dancer so he had a sense of balance and he made use of that. You get the protagonists actually catching their balance in a fight, something that is very rare in other fight scenes. Momentum is important.

Very nice analysis. One thing I can really appreciate about the red trailer, as well as some other early fights. The speed! Pauses and slow-mos ONLY where necessary. No stops for dialogue. The action is fluid and fast. But not too fast that you can't see and understand what's happening. Start and end positions for moves make sense. Fully agree, with a fight as well done as this, any minor imperfections are easily tolerated and overlooked.

I absolutely agree. XD Even the This Is America part. This trailer showed that guns are helpful during RWBY fights. Back when bullets actually worked on enemies. I don't know what happened later. They don't even work on humans and faunus nowadays. I remember walking in my mom's room and she was watching them get rocketed off a cliff, and I thought it was so funny that I needed to watch this show. And then she showed me the trailers and they were so amazing. Ended up showing this trailer to my other family members and now we all watch this show. Good job, Monty. You did amazing.

The ONE thing I LOVE from this trailer is the hair flow. How Rubys hair flows in the wind is just beautiful to me. (I know it’s weird but I gush about it every time 😋) Rubys hair usually stays in it’s hair model (?) even when there’s wind in like later volumes. BUT when he hair flows in this trailer it looks stunning like I feel there’s wind in my hair too. You KNOW it’s good when I’m gushing about the damn wind in her hair XD 🥰😂

Alot of people agree with your idea of they should of kept the idea of Crescent Rose's weight and bullet moment and I 100% agree cause it would also add to the story where they keep trying to make her fight without her weapon cause she wouldn't actually know how to move in a fight as cresent rose would be her main momentum in fights so when they have her disarmed she would not only fight awkward but have to dodge and move awkward too
@AndorRadnai
@AndorRadnai 2 жыл бұрын
I would love to see her develop her own fighting style against weapon wielding combatants with Crescent Rose‘s weight and use of momentum intact. It’s a cumbersome weapon against anything but Grimm, and it would be interesting to see how she could make these limitations work for her rather than against her, as it is the case in current seasons.

Oh right! Remember when Summer Rose was relevant to Ruby's character arc? It was a big fucking deal every time she was brought up in Volumes 1 and 2, in fact one of the few times Ruby and Yang have a falling out (that actually feels organic) was when Yang crossed the line and provoked Ruby by bringing up Summer's death. That was a huge deal back then. It was the only time we saw the happy go lucky Ruby get visibly upset and everyone actually gave Yang shit for doing that. Everything from Ruby's trailer to her bloody character image song hinted at a hidden depression regarding her mother's passing that is just fucking discarded after volume 2. Now whenever Summer is brought up it has no impact on Ruby's character development and it's only used as a plot device or as exposition bait. It's sad because one of the reasosn I initially got into RWBY (other than Monty being involved) was because of how amazing the Red trailer was. Watching Volumes 1 and 2 I always wondered when we'd get to see the innocent Ruby become the somber, mourning, and mysterious girl we saw in the Red Trailer. Of course it never fucking happens because the current writing staff doesn't know what a character arc is. Fuck. Now it just hit me that I'll never get to see that Ruby ever again and it just...hurts.

Watching this makes me so happy...yet so sad... Happy because I am so glad to see someone gets what was important about these trailers. And something Monty and his animators understood quite well. MOMENTUM!!!! I LOVE me some good fight choreography that understands something as simple as that! Each of Ruby's swings and actions carry WEIGHT and MOMENTUM behind them! It's part of what makes these so believable and amazing and entertaining to watch!!! This is what RWBY should have been. But things fell off when Monty (heaven rest his soul) passed away. And now the fights just....feel blegh. Even when Volume 1 of RWBY had a lot of filler and what not, knowing there was a fight ahead was something to look forward to. Now it all feels...flat and boring and...not as fun to watch anymore. I know its impossible to copy Monty's style (...maybe) but just.... It's good to remember what came before. This was an amazing analysis. thank you for this. Been binging your vids for the past few days.

Some time ago I was writing Naruto Monster Hunter fanfiction, and I gave him an Insect Glaive and did my best to describe how his fighting style was based heavily on the momentum of him using it to polevault, explaining it as the glaive having an hydraulic system powered by the attacks themselves. I was told it reminded people of this trailer, and while I did not get into the show itself much I felt really proud since it gave me a very close feeling of what I was trying to give the readers.

It’s almost depressing to watch this version of RWBY we never really got in the end. I’m not the kind to completely beleive Shane’s letter, but the idea that RoosterTeeth was always trying to push away from the OG vision of Monty and his close freinds seems more accurate these days. I mean the show is just so different now.

Seeing this video, I've come to realize that I haven't seen Crescent Rose's pure gun form in a long time. I think the last time was, like, Volume 2 or 3? Every other time she uses her gun, she uses it in scythe form. I also never realized the possibility of Ruby going even faster by using Gravity Dust. That, combined with her semblance would be amazing. After all this time, I forgot why I liked RWBY so much and this trailer reminded me what I enjoyed about Volumes 1 through 3.

I'm among the people who never liked RWBY. I saw this trailer when it debuted and got so hyped for the series, then I followed the other trailers as they came out. Unfortunately, it seemed like this trailer hyped the series up TOO much, and the series wound up being a disappointment due to its lackluster animation (outside of the fight scenes) and inconsistent writing. I dropped the series halfway into the first season. It's a shame, because this trailer is better than what most of the series wound up being.

The original thought behind crescent rose is exactly why it is absolutely useless against anything that isn’t a Grimm. It’s not built to be anything else than a huntress‘ weapon, all about heavy swings with enough momentum do dismember and heavy ammunition to quickly put down a Grimm. It’s heavy and cumbersome and I would really like to see this addressed and her put in an effort to get stronger, or even more skilful in using this momentum to fight. Not twirling it around as if it was weightless, but using a heavy and slow weapon they best way possible. She should never be as nimble with it as Maria or as elegant as Qrow. Those two have Scythes that suit their combat styles, but Ruby misuses it constantly and usually has to work much harder to fight against the weapons limitations rather than with them.

Fights should be choreographed and on a rhythm especially when animated as it adds an extra piece of engagement as well as not making a fight look boring as what song you use can sometimes act like an outline for the fight I won’t name any songs but I’m sure most of us can think of a song that would go well to a sword matchup and others that would go to a hand to hand matchup and others that work in the same way as that one sanding here song from MGR:R

Also did anybody else think this series was going to be a lot darker or that it would get darker a lot quicker than it did? The trailer is really implied a more mature feel going into things. And while the show has definitely gotten there, I think a lot of people expected it to happen a little faster. No complaints as far as that is concerned

This analysis is exceedingly well done, to the point of you covered essentially everything entirely. Big props to you! The one thing I don’t like (not to do with the video) is make arguments about the show going downhill but don’t explain the part they don’t like specifically. A big part of the art style change was losing the main creator for the show- It’s not about the team not having “passion to continue” in that way or “gave up”, it’s about the show needing to evolve around the tragedy. Having the show’s main kind and creator pass unexpectedly would spell the death of it- we’ve seen lesser forms of leave outright cancelling shows from big networks like Clarence from Cartoon Network. I don’t know, it just irks me to no end that people make it out like the show changed because the creators didn’t care when they were put in one of the worst situations ever needing to bury their friend, but decided to press on anyway. I don’t blame people for wanting the show to go back to an original artistic style or have different animations, far from it. I just really, really hate seeing people say the show went downhill without acknowledging that Monty’s death- like Crescent Rose in this trailer- had more impact.

I would love to point out when you point out the flaw in Ruby's legs and scythe position. While its a mistake, thing is, you can cover up mistakes with good camera and fast clear actions. The shot where it lingers on her legs isn't too long and most importantly, you're not looking at the legs, cos once the camera cuts, you're looking back at Ruby and most importantly, her weapon slicing down on the Wolves. Its a flaw but you can always hide your tracks well if you know what you're doing. Case in point, just look up the Snoke Throne Room scene or that one Live Action Avatar TLA scene and you can perfectly see how they stand out badly as opposed to this trailer

This trailer was not the first thing of RWBY I had seen. It was back in 2014 or so, accidentally coming across a clip someone posted of the V2x1 food fight that made me want to find out "what the heck did I just see". Found the Red trailer and was sold instantly. The rest is history. It is the best of all the trailers to me and the choreo still hasn't quite been matched yet in my opinion. (Though there are a couple of fights that come close.) When I finally got around to V2x1, I didn't even feel spoiled.
