Ultimately, rewrites are fanfiction, just on a bigger scale. They're meant to be fun, and it's also a case in how pre-existing work can inspire others to put their own spin on something they love. That should be encouraged, not demonized. Hell, Monty's classic fight animations are all fanmade content. And if we look to the world of professional animation, Disney literally built their empire on mostly public domain stories that they embellished with their own branding. All art is derivative, to some degree. And here I shall plug Shanespeare's excellent video essay: Originality Is Dead, and I'm Dancing On Its Grave.

But didn't u help foster this kind of behaviour. Basically attack ppl who question the show in its merit especially on twitter and have directed your "followers" to do the same. But now when the shoe is on the other foot you complain about toxic fandom which you helped build in the first place.

As someone who does a lot of writing for a lot of fandoms, RWBY is one of the only fandoms I’ve seen where alternative interpretations of the original work are actively discouraged and hated upon. I’m prominent in the genshin impact and bsd fandoms and SO many fics are divergent from canon that the only thing they all have in common are the characters. But RWBY fanfics, rewrites, fixing, etc. all have this stigma around the fandom for some reason. I think it has to do with how critiqued RWBY is compared to other media. The fandom, like you guys have mentioned before, is often incredibly defensive of the original work. I think that those who look at rewrites in ire see the very concept of rewriting a work as a critique. As if the feeling that someone wanted to rewrite RWBY equates to them seeing that something was wrong with the show. I also think this mindset is *intensified* by positive responses to rewrite. Take Celtic Phoenix’s “Fixing RWBY” for example. A lot of the positive responses tote it as being better than the original show. Since it’s the most popular RWBY rewrite I’ve seen a lot of the fandom just Seem to have the idea that all rewriters and the fans of rewrites just hate the original show. And it’s like kdndkdkndfkdnskjs Also, writers are often more criticized than artists in fandom in general to be honest. You never really see drawn AUs (such at comics featuring them in the modern day, still in Beacon, etc) get slammed on for being fanworks or changing things about the original show. This ramble probably makes no sense sorry 💀 But as someone who does make fanfic and fandom writing this is a topic I’ve thought about a lot Edit: Jesus that bingo board is so condescending and stupid. The square about the oc character legitimately made me pissed blehh

One of my favorite moments from Fixing is when Weiss asks Blake if her food preferences stem from being a cat faunus, Blake gives her a look, and she apologizes and explains that she genuinely doesn't know. I think people's problem is that they think rewrites imply theres something wrong with RWBY that needs to be fixed. RWBY Fans don't even like the implication that their beloved RWBY may somehow be in "error". These are the people who think RWBY is absolutely perfect as it is and the idea that people would need to fix it or make it better is taken as an insult.

They treat RWBY like how a lot of hyperreligious Christians treat the Bible, and as someone raised Christian (and still essentially consider myself one) familiar with the groupthink and how many people just eat the words of someone they respect and not actually think for themselves or see the actual work with their own eyes and shut out any dissenting opinions even within their own community, a lot of it is... uncomfortably similar.

I think something a lot of non-abuse survivors don't realise is that for a lot of us who have survived abuse, it can be cathartic to explore abusive characters and abusive relationships. It's not the same for everyone, but there are a lot of who will gravitate to characters like Adam because it's something we can relate to. This kind of interaction gives us a safe space to relive and explore our experiences, and can often be very therapeutic. We don't do it because we think abuse is great, we do it for catharsis. Same reason you watch a horror film or you go on a rollercoaster. When I write about abuse, I'm not glorifying it, I'm sharing my experiences and giving myself room to heal. It's no different to the poem I wrote two days ago about mourning the child I could have been without abuse. It's really shitty to tell abuse survivors that we don't get to do this because you don't like it, and it's also shitty to demand us share our abuse stories to "justify" us writing and reading it. You're not helping abuse survivors in anyway, you're just an asshole.

This may be small, but so far, the worst experience I had is on Twitter where I joked about how Ruby herself thinks she's not a good protagonist, then somebody said I'm one of those who don't like the show because it's not written how I want it. Isn't that the point of an opinion? Can't I express what I don't like about the show without people getting up in arms about it? I wasn't trying to be rude to others, and if you think Ruby is the greatest protagonist in fiction, fine, but respect my opinion, and I'll respect yours. In the case of Celtic's rewrites, I actually find them extremely impressive. Especially with how well he could pull stuff off and make it feel like it's own thing even as a rewrite. Like you can get hooked in the rewrite story just as much as if you're watching the show. Also, in one of his streams, he said that Torchwick wasn't meant to be a good guy, and he's not. He does a lot of bad stuff. He's kind of a shady asset in a really morally grey area. He isn't really meant to be 'on the side of good' willingly, since he's kind of forced to from his situation. And that makes a lot more sense than just saying he's good now.

It’s really disheartening to see how much the RWBY community push back on rewrites when imo i would argue that Rewrites and AUs are pretty vital to the creativity of a fandom Take Undertale/Deltarune for example. There’s like hundreds of different AUs and multiple fan series (XTale/Underverse and Glitchtale) and web comics about it like “hey wanna see an AU where everyone is edgy, here you go” or “hey wanna see an AU where everyone is a lil cinnamon roll, it’s right there” or maybe you wanna see the AU Christmas party A better example is MLP. the fandom took a show that was for little girls and through AUs and rewrites turned it into something everyone could get into, from something small like: “oh what if pinkie was insane and had dragon ball powers lol” to amazing fan songs filling the blanks of certain characters backstory (a lullaby for a princess or children of the night for example.) Stuff like that is just so creative and make me want to engage with the community more and seeing people on the Main Rwby subreddit go “rewrites are worse than cancer” and proceed to write whole ass fanfics in every ship/borderline smut art posted on the Reddit just throws me off.
@SwitchbackCh

The only things that these types of fans consistently love engaging with on the subreddit are fanservice art or fluff art with cute slice of life stuff. Nothing wrong with that, but for a group that so adamantly hates when people actually engage, rework and think about the lore and story of RWBY, they engage extremely little with it themselves beyond surface-level theories and hype.

I think I'll give my insight on rewrites,something I've actually done in Twitter. *Long comment I'm sorry.* I'm a big fan of them,I'm a fan of looking at what a fan can do cause in my eyes rewrites come from a place of love,a place of "I _love_ this show but I feel some things could've been done better",in the case of Celtic I was looking for just a lore rewrite and I ended up following the whole thing. His rewrites are very good,they feel like RWBY but are still his own thing,he also gives credit to his friends and his group of Sketchy Huntsmen artist that give visuals,very good ones too. And he has said he doesn't expect to be necessarily better than the original but exploit the potential. He has a Wonder Woman one too,he knows what he's doing. And it isn't just a RWBY thing,many fans rewrite works they love. Attack on Titan has AOT no Requiem that specifically rewrites the ending,it's a fanfic and a non-profit fan project. There's also Miraculous Ladybug,I actually have been wanting to do a rewrite for that one as that show is the definition of wasted potential. *Rewrites are not necessarily malicious,they're usually from people who want to explore what they like in a different way. We could say rewrites are fanfics and therefore they could be seen as fun writing exercises based on something that exists. The hate they receive is unnecessary tho to some people respectful criticism (they **_asked_** for) is welcomed. They're not bad things.*

Honestly, just yesterday I posted for the very first time a piece of art I drew, I was expecting to be called a shitty person. I have honestly been scared of showing my art to people in posts because I don't want to be called a crappy drawer, I know I'm not the best but I wanted to improve and start showing people who might want to see what I drew. I even said on my post that criticism is welcome because I'm bad with designing outfits and have trouble with color placement. So when I saw positive feedback I started to tear up because I never thought one of my art works would be liked. I have the same mentality with writing. I know I'm very bad with writing and story telling. Grammar is so hard for me and conveying my ideas is even harder. I am currently working on a re write, starting from volume 1. I write out ideas and then erase and try another idea because I'm indecisive on what path to take. I take a lot of time with these sorts of things and I never show them to the world because I'm terrified of being called trashy for my ideas. And since I'm the only one in my group of friends that likes RWBY I can't exactly talk about everything I'd like to see or complain about certain plot holes I really hope your guy's video is taken seriously by everyone, whether they like you guys or not, because absolutely no one likes to be called horrible things for doing what they love to do

Generally the majority of people just want to help. Sometimes they may have social issues, or issues with tact. Me, I tend to be very blunt, or so I'm often told. Some people try to soften their critique with jokes to make the artist laugh despite the biting commentary, and your mileage may vary on how successful that is. Criticism is as much of an art as drawing is, and unless the person is being deliberately antagonistic, it's usually good to assume innocent intent. On average, people love success stories as much as train wrecks. Criticism can still hurt, even if the people don't intend to hurt the artist, but that is why we usually say artists need to develop thick skin so their reading critique can be a more pleasant experience. There are people on the internet who find enjoyment out of being mean to artists who are just starting out, but I think they're in the vast minority. Within that minority I think some of them do that to feel good about their own insecurities in art. So perspective like that can help if you feel crippled with fear.

The only show with more rewrites than Rwby, at least that I have seen, is SAO and even when you can criticize the SAO creator for A LOT of things there is one thing that he always has done and that's taking criticism to heart, to a point that he is currently doing his own rewrite of the story. Of course, I don't think anyone is expecting RWBY to rewrite the story based on their fanfic, however, rewrite and fanfic are done over love of the series, no matter who does it.

If I had to guess, I'd say it probably comes down to two main reasons: 1) The creator of the series, who was really popular and beloved by the fanbase, died relatively early on in the series. For the same reason that you have some people being assholes towards CRWBY because they've "ruined" Monty's series you have other people who will be assholes to anyone who dares to suggest that Monty's series wasn't already great and could use improvement. Something I've seen a lot of from both sides (people who aggressively defend the series and those who heavily criticize it) is invoking Monty's name in an attempt to browbeat/shame the opposition into silence. A bunch of people shrieking about "Monty wouldn't want this" or "Monty would be so ashamed of that," often from a bunch of people whose experiences with Monty himself amount to - at most - speaking with him for a few minutes at a convention. Naturally, some of this carries over into fan works like fanfic and rewrite videos - people flying off the handle because someone dared to lay their hands on Monty Oum's precious work (never mind that Monty himself started off by making fan content with characters from stories like Final Fantasy, Dead or Alive, Metroid, etc.). 2) A lot of the main cast/crew of RWBY is VERY interactive with the fanbase. The writers, voice actors, etc. tend to be very friendly and spend time with fans at conventions, online panels, social media forums, and so on and so forth. I think this leads to a lot of fans feeling that these aren't just the people making the content, but that these people are their friends. That feeling of having a more personal connection with the people making it in turn leads to many fans feeling that any kind of criticism of the series is an attack on their "friends" rather than just being criticism of their work. Plenty of people love Akira Toriyama's work on Dragon Ball, and respect him and his series for its influences in manga and anime, but I think it's safe to say that most of us just view him as that name on the cover of the book. We might know a bit about him from interviews or the blurbs in the back pages of a manga volume, but since he isn't constantly going around interacting with the fanbase everywhere, people look at him and his work as...well...an author and his work. So rather than taking criticism of his work as criticism of someone that they think of as their buddy, they take it for exactly what it is and aren't nearly so defensive about it. Granted, in ANY fandom you're going to have people who are aggressively defensive of the series because they're just ridiculously attached to it, or who argue with each other over things like pairings and story arcs, but I think those are the two big issues that tend to lead the RWBY fandom into attacking fan works far more often than a lot of other fandoms.

This was great to listen this in the background while working! Thank you both for taking the time to make this video addressing the sudden craze of hyperreactive RWBY fans freaking out over rewrites. 26:47 That (infamous) bingo sheet being flat out wrong on almost everything gave us artists in the FRWBY discord a good laugh, and each box can pretty much be debunked if the guy who made it bothered to watch the videos. Alas, it's much easier to spread lies on the internet for clout and causing problems for people during a long, parched hiatus devoid of any new RWBY announcements. (big time gap here because you two pretty much explain exactly why) 1:09:21 Yes, yes, YES. FRWBY even got that manservice in there, a whole section of the Onsen scene focused on the males being half-naked as well, and close to equal in the amount of screentime too. (The added irony here to the sexism accusations is that almost of all the Onsen fanservice art was drawn by the women in Sketchy Huntsmen, for both character's sexes. The only exception being myself (I drew the Onsen entrance exterior) and one other artist.) 1:30:46 As you mentioned earlier in the video, these people don't really watch anything outside of American "anime". Anything remotely RWBY-like they cling to and shun everything else even if it's done well, solely because of their inexperience with other media. It's very bizarre behavior reminiscent of those overreactive Karens from the 90s and early 2000s preventing their kids from playing games like Yugioh or Pokemon because they thought it was witchcraft. 1:34:08 Critter spittin' facts here. It's how these fans validate attacking content creators. 1:42:06 I think this way as well. I wasted so much time bitching on Twitter, so I deleted my old account and it's greatly improved my mental health as my new feed is artists I follow and cute animals. It's also got me drawing more and improving every single year. Freeing oneself from social media is the best recommendation I can give to people who get angry over tiny things like rewrites. Time is important and I'd rather spend that time doing fun stuff I like doing! 1:43:20 Same, Twiins! 1:46:22 LMAO PRETTY MUCH

I read why some RWBY fans dislike rewrites and a lot say that it's coz they perceive it along the lines of "the fan creator thinking they can do a better job than the actual creators," and coming off as condescending or proud. Agree to disagree. I love these rewrites! Celtic's stuff is fun. Rewrites just ain't some people's thing, y'know? That said...I very rarely see the amount of hate for rewrites than in I do RWBY. AU's and such are quite embraced almost everywhere else.

Honestly rewrites are my favourite type of story analysis. Because every show has good potential, whether or not they tap into that potential. Rewrites can not only show where the show went wrong but how to improve or what direction they should go. And that’s the best form of criticism in my eyes. People think rewrites are spawned from hate, but if anything, to be invested enough in a show to want to rewrite it shows an appreciation for the original work and ideas.

Thinking about it, a bingo board would actually kinda be fun but it just doesn't have to be as meanly written as that guy's. It also doesn't need to be broadcast to the whole internet. Just a lil fun thing to keep watch of while reading/listening to a rewrite. Also I just got to the part where y'all talk about a super smash bros thing. I wanna shout out this one artist who goes by "Wooden Plank Studios"! They've got this long running story where Sephiroth poisons and kills the entire roster and the only one who can revive them is Kazuya cuz he just got added in at the time they started (and incineroar but y'all have to see how he survives). It's been fun seeing the different ways they revive characters and stuff 10/10 would recommend checking out + they do a lil bit where they take suggestions on new pokemon ideas :3

great video, as always! the only """problem""" (in the loosest possible sense of the word) ive ever had with rewrites is that sometimes people put so much work in that its basically its own product now, but they actively keep it from being its own thing because... im assuming it gets more views? and i dont mean that in a bad way, just pointing out its easier to click on "RWBY rewrite part 1" than "the power of four chronicles: part 1 (original story)" and thus youre more likely to be able to justify the time that way. and thats not even really a problem with rewrites as much as it is a problem with the broader internet (which im also guilty of!)

Listening to this via spotify so adding on... progressively? Personally, I have no issue with rewrites. I consider em AUs for the most part. Hell, I'm over here with way too many ocs. I enjoy some abridged series more than the original. I read way too much -redacted-. It's the inflated ego of "RWBY sucks. I'm better than the original. Hire me RT." that gets me. Then again, I just generally don't read em. It's like y'all said. Don't be an asshole. As for Jaune? Don't hate em. Just oversaturated with him to the point I'm bored of it. Gotta fast myself of it. Faunus heat? I'm pretty sure it was in that recent (in)famous rewrite. As for futa, they want dick without a guy attached or lesbians with... breeding. Power levels? The writer is complaining rwby doesnt have power levels when it sorta does. It's just less dbz and naruto and more jojo's. Racism but worse. Essentially, the racism is harsher. Also depiction does not equal advocacy.

This further highlights the biggest issue with RWBY, the world feels like a hollow set piece with nothing interesting in it. Everything we do know gets dealt with offscreen, is forgotten about, is wildly inconsistent, or is told but not shown, so it's kinda near unavoidable that things have to be changed in rewrites.

This bingo board is very clearly referencing some things Celtic Phoenix had in his lore rewrite video. Faunus Heat Cycles and more explicit Power Levels in terms of aura were both touched on (though not really every brought up in the main show), and were the parts of it that were the weirdest and unnecessary. I also thought his bathhouse scene in Vol5 wasn't great . . . the Neo reveal felt a little more awkward than I thought was appropriate for a kids show. It could have been done better IMO.

One problem I notice with fanfics is that they add so many tags that it is impossible to discern what it will focus on. This is especially annoying if you are not a fan of certain oversaturated ships. Say you are not a fan of Bumblebee, be it for whatever reason from thinking it is the worst or just overdone. Then you search for a Rosegarden rewrite and find one that looks promising, only to notice that it has a BB tag, as well. That could mean anything from its a small background ship that gets 5 lines dedicated to it to it will take up half the story, when what you really wanted was just Rosegarden.

I love the rewrites that "fix" RWBY (the ones that keep as close to the main plot as possible while fixing the parts the writers lacked in). I keep watching the show because it keeps showing all these glimmers of promise and I want it to get good again. I started enjoying watching criticism of the episodes and show because its teaching me how to appreciate when it is good and WHY. the worst part is everyone can agree that racism for example was handled poorly but then I always ask myself what it being done properly would look like. Rewrites actually back up the "they could have handled this or that better" statements made about the show. how could they have handled racism better? Well let me show you! The characters arcs are messy? Here's how they could have been flushed out better. Ill use the well written thought out rewrites as my headcannon for arcs the show never actually gave me but I wanted so bad. Honestly without critters critiques, unicorn of wars rewrites, you all writes theories, etc. I wouldn't be watching the show anymore. The Celtic Phoenix rewrite of the series is great. RWBY’s main problem is they constantly add new characters without even bothering to develop them, it feels like a CW show characters are added and they’re just kind of “there” I really like it when Yang is more of the “Team mom” at least in fics like that her and Ruby actually interact with each other. Weiss’s racism in the show just.. stops, the rest of the series they make it out to be her family’s problem, “The kids aren’t friends anymore they barely talk to each other” as opposed to the actual show where they’re all just sort of “around” each other, to the point they could barely even be considered friends? Hell half these morons haven’t even spoke to each other one on one. In regards to Resident Evil, literally every boss transforms at one point and just gets more and more grotesque it’s not like the fedora wearing version is the last we see of Mr. X, it’s not like Jack Baker dies in his yellow shirt, they both just become more monstrous with each encounter, hell look at someone like William Birkin every single encounter you have with him he looks worse, the first time you fight him is when he is at his most human. Considering Salem is pretty much a Eldritch abomination, who has shown the ability to modify and change others, I will be absolutely surprised if she doesn’t at least modify herself in some fashion.

An interesting thing is that Miles and Kerry have said they're amateurs too when they started on RWBY. Monty had them watch anime to get the vibe of what he wanted for RWBY. Let's stop pretending that rwby was story driven. Monty did great with Dead Fantasy because of its visual and fight driven stories. Rwby is an excuse for cool characters and fights with absurd weapons but then it got muddled and now what drew people in got lost in its clumsy attempts of plot points. This was fun to listen too. If you guys have the chance, I'd love to hear more about your favorite rewrites
@astrothsknot
@astrothsknot Жыл бұрын
Unpopular opinion, but I believe that Miles and Kerry don't actually like anime and that's another reason why RWBY isn't well written. I also believe that when Rooster Teeth got bought over (Shane sounded awful to work with in that letter. I wonder if Monty was similar) that the move to a more businesslike way of running things was clipping Monty's wings - he's animating stuff that's nothing to do with being written and that's fiscally wasteful and the suits won't put up with that - and he's thinking "I signed on to make a Dead Fantasy I could make money off!" He doesn't look happy towards the end and he's barely talking. I think if he'd lived , Monty would have left after s3. I've worked with people like Monty - brilliant and out the box, but needing a firm hand to keep them focussed on what they're meant to be doing and not what they want to be doing.

I just don't understand how RWBY can be so vitriolic to AU's specifically when Dragonball, which pretty much everyone rags on, puts spin-offs as some of it's highest-rated fan content. Like look at that multiverse tournament someone made a whole-ass fan manga of that's just "what if cell won, buu won, and Vegito stayed fused then all these guys were brought to a tournament?" or like the ENTIRETY of MasakoX's channel. Dude literally does pretty much nothing but What-If videos but they're FUN. And people LIKE THEM. That's not to say there aren't some weird or low-effort spin-offs out there, but shrieking like a priest at the council of Nicea because someone made a change to your holy cannon is just kind sad.

I've been aboard the rewrite train for the SW prequels and sequels (and believe me, they outnumber the RWBY rewrites I've seen), so it's almost nostalgic seeing rewrites in the RWBY fandom. Sometimes, SW and RWBY rewrites can share the tendency of sticking to the general plot of their respective canon material rather than try to go in a new direction that might give a better story. More of a personal nitpick, I suppose, but it doesn't hurt to change things up a big and it does annoy me when some rewrites make the same mistakes as the canon stories they're rewriting which makes them feel almost the same in certain regards. Like some comments have said, fanfiction tend to be looked down upon (not necessarily unjustified since A LOT of fics are just porn), and rewrites are no exception. It could depend on the execution and/or reception but like other comments mentions, certain (rabid) defenders feel insulted when you try to rewrite the thing they like, and they will be far more difficult to please, if they can be at all. I admit, my most recent attempts at rewrites had been done out of annoyance with the franchises and fandoms, but it doesn't change the fact they have sprung from what once had been a love of said franchises and fandoms (which I almost want to see burn to ashes by this point).

The bleach fandom has spent years and years getting shit on by the rest of the shonen fandom sphere and we’ve just come to a natural defensive stance, always welcoming newcomers and shield bashing the people who just hate for no reason. And now look at us, a new beautiful anime season coming in October, we got a new manga chapter hinting at an interesting new arc. Also the person who made the bingo board is a big fan of Bumblebee so a few things check out. Also they make more zings against Americans for some reason.

I think my favorite rewrite Concept I’ve heard of to this day is RWBY, but it’s all just Halo. Like they were talking about making the lamp Cortana and I found the idea hilariously beautiful. That being said assuming I’ve managed to catch your attention, would you be interested in looking at some RWBY weapon ideas I 3D modeled? I know I’ve got room for improvement, but there are some that I think are pretty decent that I posted on a RWBYOC Subreddit that I’d be willing to share the links to if you’d be interested.

I ended up finding the artist that you guys mentioned (or the one I'm 99% sure you were shading) and honestly? Maybe it's because I've been doing art school for like 7 years now, (gone through 3 programs, lol) and their art is just okay. Like, their poses and gestures are stiff and all they have is polish. It's really generic anime style. That person has no place to speak as if they are a paragon of great character design. That person would not be hired for professional comic publishers or the like.

My favorite is even getting mad at the rewrite that makes grimm into a zombie like … THAT SOUNDS SO FUCKING COOL!!

Oh this explains a lot. I always wondered why you and Twiins sounded exactly the same, and now it's so obvious that I don't know how I didn't figure it out myself lmao.

I’m pretty sure the bingo card is 70% “I didn’t like FRWBY”, that’s the only explanation I can see for why “POWER LEVELS” is there, cause Celtic had a video where he explained the aura and semblance system in FRWBY.

Have we really seen anti-fanus racism in the show? I thought we were going to see it in Atlas, but even in Atlas we didn't really see anything that i can remember. And whiess's dad said the fanus were paid equally and then we never saw any proof that he was lying. did we see a fanus in a mine or a fanus in a collar or eomething like that and i just don't remember it? Cinder got the type of treatment fromher adopted family i was expecting fanus to get, but she is human. I think we would know by now if cinder is a fanus. To conclude, i'm not surprised fics do more with the racism because the show doesn't really have any racism despite having a terrorist group supposedly fighting against said racism.

Critter: What if there is some person out there who does really relate to Jaune, were never nearly as talented as everyone else around them, they have a bunch of sisters, and they feel kinda outcast. What if there is some kid out there who does honestly really relate to Jaune and just really wants to see things from his perspective? Me: I feel called out. I honestly really love RWBY and I want to draw it and just be a part of it more, but I'm honestly terrified of the fans. I'm afraid that if I were to tell people that honestly, Jaune was my favorite character of the whole cast, I would be shamed because I like "the self insert" and "he gets too much screen time" and all that crap (trust me, I personally am not a fan of self-inserts and I'm currently struggling with fully separating one from being a self-insert into an actual character). I'm afraid that if I were to share my RWBY OCs they would receive hate for... I dunno? Existing? Not all being cute girls? Having a male silver-eyed warrior character that I wish to explore and understand that power with? If he were a girl, it'd be fine I assume. I dunno. I probably got off topic there. The redesign I did of Yang recently is the only fanart I've ever made for RWBY because I know I'm not the greatest artist out there, and I don't wanna get harassed for drawing a weird facial expression or pose or something. It seems that in the RWBY fandom, you have to be a part of the hivemind to avoid harassment. I don't think I ever will consider myself part of the RWBY fandom because of those people. I'd much rather be a fan on the outside looking in. Heck, it's much safer that way.

Except Jaune is a very popular character among the fandom and in fan works. No one gets shamed for saying that they enjoy Jaune. In fact, the only people who have insulted me for enjoying Jaune is...the show's hatedom. Likewise, the people who insist Jaune is a "self insert"? The hatedom, not the fandom-because they use this claim as a means to hurl abuse at and make vile claims about one of the show's writers. The people who attack Jaune as a character and his fans are people in the hatedom, not RWBY fans. "I'm afraid that if I were to share my RWBY OCs they would receive hate for... I dunno? Existing? Not all being cute girls? Having a male silver-eyed warrior character that I wish to explore and understand that power with?" All of these things are common in RWBY fanfiction. People do not get harassed for making teams with male characters, or having silver-eyed characters in their fics.

@@strawbellebelle I dunno. I'm just terrified of even trying to present my work because those people have the loudest voices in the fandom. I'm not going to run the risk of running into them because I'd rather not be attacked for my ideas and opinions. Also, I didn't know there was a separate part of the fandom called the "hatedom". What exactly counts as being in the hatedom? Did they just make it to rag on all the critics in a neat little circle?
@strawbellebelle

@@thenintendnub64 There's plenty of cool and welcoming people in the fandom with all kinds of opinions. You don't need to bother with the folks who attack others for their opinions; I don't care about people who insult me for enjoying Jaune (all of whom consider themselves "critics" of the show rather than fans, mind you). And the hatedom aren't part of the fandom-RWBY has a particularly toxic community of people dedicated to hating on the show, its creators, and its fans. It's not the critics the hatedom hates on; in fact, most of them are adored by the hatedom whenever they say negative things about the show, no matter what it is. (Twiins iink themselves is a perfect example of this, because she routinely makes highly negative videos regarding RWBY and its fans, but when she made a video disagreeing with most of the hatedom regarding one male villain, she received a bunch of hate over it.)

So I just had a thought, this is mainly thanks to God of War Ragnarok, but basically all those who are toxic and bullying others who just want to connect and have fun are basically Heimdall.

Uh, sorry for all the disjointed comments, but I've warched rthe whole thing now. This was a really cool thing to draw and listen to. This just further reminds me why to me fandom is the friends I already have who are into the same things as me. I perused RWBY reddit for the first time in years because of this video and ew, I really wish I hadn't. Most of the people there are the definition of bad faith criticism when it comes to people having alternate views on RWBY.

The Bumblebee bingo square is extra funny because getting the canonicity "out of the way" as they say is literally more than the show has done so far. Even if they canonize Bumblebee in a way you think is poor, at least they did it instead of just implying it without confirming it.
