This! I have the books and that part of the story really made Apple a more nuanced and sympathetic character for me. I was on Team Raven from the start, but after reading the books (and watching Dragon Games) it's not hard to see why Apple so desperately wants some certainty to her story

@@jalaynealbores9846 even if death is natural, it's not surprising to be afraid of it. death means the end of life, and apple's story doesn't guarantee the sleeping for a 100 years thing, only getting poisoned briefly then being awakened via kiss. And her trauma from falling in the well (where she almost drowned) added to her determination in getting her story's ending. Apple wants security and what's known, she's afraid of veering off the path and death is very unpredictable

I think the reason why Duchess wants a Happily Ever After so badly is because she is a similar situation to Raven. Depending on which variation of the Swan Lake you read, Dutchess would be doomed to remain a swan forever. Ashlynn, who is rejecting her story, gets the cookie cutter fairytale ending. Dutchess wants to sabotage Ashlynn so she could have a positive ending to her story. There are also other sources for the series such as “Next Top Villian” one of Ever After High’s books. Don’t quote me on this as a I read it a while ago. This book sees Duchess Swan taking General Villainy in an effort to replace Raven as the Evil Queen. The book seems to imply (and the show does through its use of color scheme) that Dutchess is actually the daughter of the Black Swan. Or maybe she’s meant to be Odette’s role, In not quite sure. Just my hot take. Really enjoyed this review as always!

Hello there! Super excited/pumped for your EAH content. So to explain Duchess’s deal: Duchess has a very horrible fairytale ending. In her version of Swan Princess she is destined to turn into a swan and stay that way forever which is royally unfair to her. So since there is a clear hierarchy with the stories (Apple being on top and Duchess being near the bottom) happily ever afters aren’t a limitless thing. Not everyone can get one; so when Ashlynn who is clearly sided as a Royal goes against her destiny by dating a Rebel it opens up a slot that Duchess so desperately wants. (Little spoiler that you’ll find out in the special Way Too Wonderland: destinies can be stolen.) Duchess’s problem is she finds it ridiculously unfair that Ashlynn gets to go against her destiny by dating Hunter and still get a happily ever after in the end. So Duchess schemes that if she outs Ashlynn & Hunter that she’ll get Ashlynn’s happily ever after. I hope that makes sense. Anyways can’t wait to see your journey reviewing this incredibly amazing, but short lived, series. ^ - ^

Idk, still doesn’t make much sense to me. How is any of this scheming functionally gaining Duchess a happy ending? And yes, you can theoretically sign the Storybook in someone else’s place, but Raven signed and she isn’t evil. And if she can still go against her destiny despite signing, that means signing wouldn’t guarantee anyone’s destiny. It may, however give people certain abilities. If Duchess signed in Ashlynn’s place, what would actually happen?

Douches thinks that if Ashlynn breaks the rules she wont be allowed an happy ending and she can take it. Anyone can technically steal someones destiny be signing the book, that is what Jester wants to do. When Raven signs the book she becomes the evil queen and gets all the powers that an actual villain would need. She becomes evil for awhile but she never exactly turns back, Apple just reminds her of who she is and shes like "ohh yeah i have morals". In the end Raven has the power to lift the spell on wonderland and in that scene she might still be partly evil but in the end that book is "destroyed". And by destroyed i mean that Apple and Raven decides that you should be able to choose whether to follow your story or not, Raven uses magic and makes the book basically useless.

I love EAH, it’s inspired my most successful fanfic, even if it doesn’t always make sense. Duchess’ drama isn’t very well explained in the show but basically she’s sad that she doesn’t get a happily ever after in her tale (whether she dies or is stuck as a swan forever or quite what, I can’t remember) and she believes that if she can disgrace one of the princesses who *are* destined to get a happily ever after, like Apple or Ashlynn or Briar, then she can swoop in (accidental bird pun) and take their place and thus their destiny and happily ever after from them, which is kind of ridiculous, but her emo teen brain don’t care

The character of Duchess in fairy/ballet story has a tragic ending, specially in the ballet version when Odette (white swan) commit suicide. Also, her character background is unknown, we never know if she is the daughter of the white o black swan. However, that explains her obsession with Ashlynn, she independent the version of her story has a happy ending,; and she wants that.

Thank you for addressing the part where Apple is worried about her friends. I feel like people really gloss over the fact Apples been told her entire life that if someone doesn’t sign the storybook of legends and goes against their destiny, all of her friends will cease to exist. I won’t say that Apple hasn’t done some heinous things but when you look more into Apples backstory and the context of the show they all make sense. I’m not excusing her actions but I feel like people are to easy to write her off as selfish when she’s more complex than that.

I just noticed how genius briar and apple's friendship is. The original snow white had a sister, rose red. And they also encountered a bear that turned out to be a cursed prince. Yooooo, do you think that that version of snow white and rose red are briar and apples grandmothers? snow white and rose red is different from the well-known/disney-adapted rendition of snow white; they’re not the same snow whites the main difference is that the snow white from snow white and rose red had “fair hair” (light colored) while the snow white with the apple had “hair as black as ebony wood”; it would however be an interesting twist if the intention was that apple would end up taking the footsteps of that snow white rather than the version most people are familiar with (which would be why apple’s hair is blonde/fair rather than black like ebony wood)

The thing about Duchess Swan saying that Ashlyn would still have a happily ever after is when you watch Throwncoming, you can catch Ashlyn saying that she had already signed the story book of legends. To back this up, if you read The Storybook of Legends, there is a moment where Raven notices how Ashlyn looks sad when she got in stage to sign. This goes for Hunter as well when he watched the girl he loves sign her destiny away. Of course people would be confused since Legacy Day didn’t show the other royals or rebels signing their names. I’m sure because they didn’t have the time or the money to animate all of it so the books kind of filled the holes. The reason why Duchess Swan is mentioning how she doesn’t get a happily ever after is because when you look at the story of Swan Lake, it’s not a very great since both her and her supposed lover dies together in the end or she stays stuck as a swan. For the rankings part, I’m not sure what it could mean but I believe that the royal rankings are based on how well a fairytale is known to us, the audience. And I’m sure that little kids don’t even know what Swan Lake is unless they actually watch like a movie adaptation or the actual ballet but the royal rankings could also be kind of like “oh what’s your favorite fairytale?” And the more the story is favorited by the audience then the story would be more well known. It the story is well known then it could be a way of connecting the dots that if the story is no longer well known or it disappears, the characters will go “poof” ((although we know that’s not the case)) but I thought it would be pretty interesting that the royal rankings are formed by popularity based on the fairytale each character is meant to play.

If I remember correctly, some of this stuff is mentioned in the first Ever After High book. I’m not really sure about the taking Happily Ever After bit, but in Duchess’s story the person she is destined to fall in love with is destined to die and the Princess destined to be stuck as a Swan, according to wikia. Duchess was actually raised by her grandmother, although this story is another issue I have with the inheriting story of parents again. I think she also believes she can take another’s story if they are disgraced like how Courtly tried to steal Lizzy’s in the Wonderland special. But her being a Royal makes no sense to me.

Hi judgement big fan, here what I think duchess meant: I do agree the way she is talking does imply a hierarchy for the story but I think she in terms of how well know a certain story is.For example: Cinderella and snow white are two of the most well-known fairy tales,when u ask someone what their stories are they can tell u and everyone knows they end in a happily ever after. But when it comes to the Swan princess not as many people know it or its ending. So when she said she wouldn't get a happily ever after,I think she meant seens her story is a bit more obscure she in whatever controls the destiny of the characters would be seen as less important and wouldn't receive a happily ever after.

She also means literally not get a happily ever after. The version where Odette breaks the curse and marry the prince is only one of the endings, other tellings of the story make it so that Odette's true love is killed and she's cursed to stay as a swan forever. That's the ending Duchess will get, it's even confirmed in the books. Though, I still don't get how ruining someone else's happily ever after will get you yours, unless your planning to take their place in story, but that makes no sense as Duchess is a Royal.

I prefer Madeline overall but, on the topic of main characters, it was Raven when I was younger but, when I got older( and began to appreciate writing more) I ended up adoring Apple's character depth though, she can come off as a selfish brat but so can Raven... both are selfish in their own ways, Raven could be ruining everyone's lives, and existences for her own benefit and Apple can have people suffer from a fate they don't want for her own benefit, and both arguments they have are valid. As mentioned in Critter's review video, both arguments are valid choices.

@@エリン-o9h I mean that's why I like her. Even though Snow white is typically depicted as good and pure. Apple has a good story a d she doesn't want to loose it. Also possibly all her life she's probably been told that you should never do anything to go against destiny and if you do something against your destiny you will disappear. You can't really expect her to act any other way. She's basically a Christian who grew up surrounded by other Christians. Raven was the first one to challenge her view of the world. If she stayed the same and never changed then I probably wouldn't like her. Slowly though she gets less pushy about the destiny thing then in the dragon games movie she begins to agree with Raven. And even before then it's not like she's vindictive about the destiny thing the ending of true hearts day shows this.

I actually think that Ashlynn is following her father's tale such as "King marries commoner/Cinderella" heck even "King marries a worker where they get their hands dirty" literally and metaphorically plus in the real story they DO divorce due to the king being a compulsive womanizer except sparrow ISN'T a womanizer so there are to sides to this, Ashlynn marries one of the Charmings and gets divorced anyway and can marry Hunter or Ashlynn marries Hunter and since Ashlynn doesn't hate men and isn't a womanizer to herself so this Cinderella has 2 sides

I think the reason why Duchess is angry and "she doesn't get her happily ever after" is because Hunter is supposed to be the Hunter that shoots her down as a swan. It hasn't been confirmed which "hunter" Hunter actually is. At first I thought he was the Hunter from Snow White, but after True Hearts Day, I really think he's the Hunter in Swan Lake. And since Hunter is dating Ashlyn, she can't get her happily ever after because in the story, True Love is what saved the Swan Princess from being a swan forever. I don't know about the Royal Rankings though.

Because in Swans Lake, both Odette and Odile don't have happy endings no matter the interpretation is something to consider why she says she won't get a happy ending. If she was Odette's daughter, she was doomed to be a swan. If she was Odile's, she was forever a pawn to a scheme made by the adults.

look, if you know swan lake, you know it doesn't end well in some variations, and that's what duchess means by not getting her happily ever after. either she lives the rest of her life as a swan or straight-up gets killed by her love interest. also implications of her being more alike to odettes role since she seems to turn into a black swan so there's that(personal headcanon, previous Odette and Odile hooked up, though also this might just be a reference to how some versions of the ballet have the same person portray both roles)

Something that I find quite interesting about Duchess is that although she is the daughter of Odette her attitude reminded me of Odile (Rothbart's daughter AKA the wizard who cursed odette), they are both envious, cunning and vindictive, they both are in love with someone who doesn't love them back and when they got a chance to ruin someones life/relationship in order to make theirs more to their liking they took it, I also found something curious on duchess character design: Odile is often portrayed in pictures and movies as having either black or white hair (with a few times being red) she is also shown to be someone who enjoys wealth and status, Duchess has white and black hair and although she is not shown to be particularly interested in riches, Status is something she certainly desires, she is willing to put both Ashlynn and Briar names in the mud in order to make her royal ranking go as high as she desires,and there is also her swan form. In the play Odette swan form is white and while odile doesnt get a swan form she is described as "odette's opposite" and often called "the black swan" and what's Duchess form? A black swan. Also it may not be related but Odile was described to be a talented sorceress who was able to manipulate her appearance anytime and Duchess is able to change into her swan form and back at any time she wants, why can she control her tha while Odette can't? In that case shouldn't Justine control her sleep dancing? Or cedar be able to say whatever lies whenever she pleases? No because their parents couldnt control them, so why should they? Im not saying that Duchess isn't Odette's daughter I just think that's an interesting detail.

I think that's why she wanted to out Ashley and Hunter, becouse if they keept there romance secret Ashley could still play the royal role like Red Riding Hood probably did. So Ashley would still get her story book ever after even though she is "breaking the rules", while Duchess is stuck with a story that sees her turning into a swan for the rest of her live. When Ashley and Hunter outed there relationship I think Duchess was angry becouse her original plans of forcefully kicking Ashley out if the royal position where ruined, but then she thought about it for longer than two secounds and realiced "Hey, this is actually perfect!" becouse Ashley outing herselfe still meant a possible free spot in a story. I think that's also why she wanted to ruin the party: the more people she can kick out of there "Royal position", the more storys would have a "free spot" of a now missing character. So technically Dudchess is a rebel herselfe, only thar her intentions aren't to make her own "happy ever after", but to steal the "happy ever after " of someone else. (Or well, literally steal any sort of fate that doesn't sees her turning into a swan forever) But that's just my interpretation of her motivations and actions. In a away it's kind of like the best friends of the leaders of the argument, both know the other side of the debate fits them better, but still sticks to their friends side. Looking back. Ashley’s strugle comes across as really quire coded. It’s about loveing the person you love, even though others might disagree. There are people that want to “ruin her,” but when her and hunter owns up to it, it doesnt have power over Them. However, simply because of the World They are in, it has some consekvenses. Her enemy is happy because “bow everyone knows,” her love might actually put her in danger, and because of that danger, she has friends who doesnt suport her relationship. It presuers her into breaking up and hideing her love for a person because it wasnt aprooved by the World. It is only once she deside to not let Those things controle her, that she Can be truly comfortable with who she loves. Even Apple is a pretty good view on how some friends or family members to quire people might feel. She doesnt have anything against their relationship, what she does have something against, is Ashley getting hurt by it. A verry realistisk Way for a person Like Apple to reakt.

the number one thing that always bothered me with EAH is stuff like... The story of Pinocchio (kiddie Disney version) happens when Pinocchio is essentially a newborn child and yet Cedar is preparing for her story. Same thing with Holly O'Hair and Rapunzel supposedly being trapped in the tower her whole life until her story happens. There's more stuff that falls apart when you think about it too hard but those 2 stand out to not making sense.

duchess whole situation “I’ll never get my happily ever after” is in her version of swan lake is Odette ends up passing away or staying a swan forever since the prince dances with Odile who he mistakes for since the villain Rothbart glamoured her to look like Odette And she herself even though she wanted to own the whole situation of ash and hunter relationship couldn’t be happy since again she isn’t destined for a happily ever after with a prince or boyfriend in high school And I think the whole situation about the royal rankings is that hunter isn’t of a high rank and is mostly at commoner rank while ash is a royal so it makes some sense that she thinks royals must be with royals or high ranks or so that’s what I think but in the sense of Cinderella it’s kinda like the reverse where hunter is “Cinderella” and ash is her father aka Prince Charming

Is no one gonna talk about how the hearts are supposed to be given to your true love, and apple gave it to Ashlyn? I mean, it chould be a hint that apple is...a lesbian and is just in the closet cause she wants to follow her destiny to keep everyone safe and also make her parents proud and have a happy life. It should mean that they are also soul mates though! cause love isnt always romantic. In one of the books, they explained how Duchess may be able to take Raven's stories or someone else's since hers isn't as popular so that is what she trying to do and she might have been angry that she wasn't the one to uncover Ashlyn and Hunter's secret as that may have proved herself to maybe be fit to be Cinderella since she "cares" about the rules so much before realizing that she could still use them being out to her advantage. About Duchess and her obsession on getting her own happily ever after by taking it from other people. It actually benefits her if a Royal rebels against their destiny. Because of the fact that by signing the book of destiny you will be sealing your fate to the page of a certain story. Duchess exposing Ashlyn is her attempt to take her place as the next Cinderella by signing on Ashlyn's page instead of hers. She believes that if she's the one who tells the Principal about it, then the Principal would be kind enough to give Ashlyn's page to her which explains why she got so upset when Ashlyn and Hunter came clean. It was a natural reaction for someone like her because she didn't get what she wants. But, after giving it some thought, I guess Duchess realized that it's a good thing since Cinderella's story won't be fulfilled by her daughter and Duchess is happy enough to take it. Because like Raven, Duchess is also doomed with a bad ending for her story despite being a Royal. But unlike Raven, who was born a Rebel and believes that her happily ever after can be made without signing the book of destiny, Duchess is born a Royal. Which means her mentality revolves around following a destiny to achieve a happy ending. If she can't have it in her own story, then she'll happily take it from someone else.

The whole reason why Duchess Swan hates Ella is not because she's a royal getting her original happily ever after since she is going against her destiny, it's that even when Ella goes against her destiny and follows her heart through dating Hunter she still gets a happy ending even if it's not the original one whereas Duchess doesn't get any happily ever after ending despite sticking to being a Royal. She doesn't want to be labelled as a Rebel which would imply that she's "evil" and thus she is forcing herself to follow her planned fairytale ending despite wanting a happily ever after of her own which would turn her into a Rebel and paint her in a "bad" light as someone who is against the system. Duchess Swan's destiny if she follows it is to be cursed to be a swan forever because her "prince" makes his vow of unbreaking love to someone who he will think is her but isn't. In the original story the Swan Queen, Duchess' mother, chooses to die with her prince instead of being stuck as a swan forever and the two are reunited in heaven. Clearly Mattel couldn't go with the original version of the story since it involves death but still Duchess is jealous of the Royals who have a happily ever after and still choose to go against their destiny and wants to try to steal someone else's happily ever after for herself which makes her a Rebel despite her claiming she's a Royal.

Thank you for talking about how Duchess's plan is really convoluted what makes her think that Headmaster Grim can give happily ever after's away when in the show it is proven that he wants every single student to follow there predetermined destiny, look at how he tries to control Raven queen from following her destiny, or how he goes out of his way to hire Blondie locks to host a show that proves the legends true. (Much at his own expense.) Not to mention the fake set-up of the tale of the two sisters in the ever after high books. Even the storybook of legends that Grim is so fixated on getting his students to sign is FAKE, he does not have any control of the student's destiny much as she does. What makes her think that if she follows all of Grim's rules, he will give her another student's destiny. Is she just expecting, "Why Duchess you are such a good model student, here, take any happily ever after you want." That he'll do it? What makes her believe that? Is she so desperate to have a happily ever after that she will make excuses for herself to get out of her own ending? What's stopping her from writing her name down on another Student's page? Like what courtly did? This confused me even when I was watching it whether it's the first time or watching this review. Either way I just hope that ever after high comes back in some way, even if Mattel has Disney licensing back. I would love for the chance to be able to get a duchess swan doll, all of the one's online are crazy expensive.

Regarding Duchess: Odette dies at the end of Swan Lake. Like, in a very shitty, completely avoidable death that grants everyone around her their freedom, at the cost of her life. It's a tragedy, and she obviously doesn't want to endure that fate. Duchess in envious, hypocritical and mean spirited because she can't get anything go her way. That's why she is angry at Ashlynn: she has a granted destiny of bliss after a few years of indentured servitude and physicall abuse, while she will get to live a decent life that gets taken away from her piece by piece. And if Ashlynn renounces her destiny for Hunter, she'd still be doing something she wants. Duchess is a Royal not because of her values, she just cares for her happily ever after and she is willing to take it away from others if it means avoiding such a ruinous fate. Think of her as a blend of Yzma, Regina George and Heather Duke. She has a valid reason to be upset, and is basically powerless, but still craves that power and every time she gets it she uses to put other people down. "Better them than me".

Random theory, I think cerise and ramona bad wolf are half sisters. In the episode cerise, red riding hood, has with her family ramona is never mentioned or even hinted at. I think the big bad wolf had her with another woman that relationship was rocky so he then ricindled his relationship with red riding hood and here comes cerise. I think he stayed with ramonas mum for some time before leaving her for red and cerise, he didn't leave ramona just the mother. Even though its not confirmed I think that makes sense. It would explain their distance and and how they was able to be kept a secret for so long. Why would red let her daughters be enemies?

Though I don’t think it’s ever officially revealed whether Red is Ramona’s mother or not, I presumed they were still full sisters, and it’s only behind the scenes reasons (such as they hadn’t come up with her character yet) that prevent Ramona from being featured earlier in the show. If they knew they were going to introduce a daughter of the big bad wolf eventually, why would Mattel have made their first San Diego Comic Con International exclusive doll be Cerise Wolf, aka Cerise if she followed her father’s destiny instead of her mother’s?

I think about dutches his motivations is that Ashlin will get a happily ever after whether she marries Hunter or not, and it’s implied that that’s not something that that Dutches gets. That part is mentioned when she’s explaining how if Ashlin would’ve fall down and started there would be a shifting in the royal rankings and it would allow her to move forward in society. Therefore it would guarantee a happily ever after a riches and wealth for dutches that she wouldn’t get otherwise.

The thing I really don’t get about Duchess is that Swan Lake has a happy ending, so even if there’s some implication that certain royals’ happy endings are better (Apple being supreme ruler vs someone being a minor queen) her’s is still good? Like she pretends she’s doomed when worse case scenario her happy ending is just not as glamorous compared to others, in which case it would make more sense that her motivation is ambition not desperation.

I mean I understand why Duchess is jealous of Ashlyn, Ashlyn gets to become a princess while Duchesses fate is death. But how is ruining Ashlyns life going to get you a happily ever after? I know that Duchess is being petty and envious but if you really think about it, all that will accomplish is screwing with Ashlyn. Duchess isn't going to take Ashlyns happily ever after. In season 1 (I think), Raven tried to find someone that could take her destiny, maybe if Ashlynn "gave up" her happily ever after, then Duchess could become the new Cinderella and live a good life. About the Swan Princess plot line, maybe she would trick Ashlynn into becoming the next Swan Princess.
