I know you didn’t intend to do this video separately but it turned out fantastic this way. It was so incredibly sweet to see you “interacting” with each other while being apart. Claire’s expressions, and how Ross speaks of Claire, is absolutely endearing. I’m so happy for you both to have found one another ❤️

I'm pretty sure that the reason Ross' Jade plant looks different from yours is because he has got himself a Crassula Ovata Minima 😊 They have smaller leaves than a regular Crassula Ovata 😉

The fly traps and sarracenia should be kept in bog like conditions so having the pot in a saucer of water is completely appropriate! Old flytraps will turn black as they die, it’s normal. If there is new growth happening it should be in good shape. Both of those plants need super high light! A very sunny windowsill or strong grow light will help them thrive! Best of luck with all of them 😊

That calathea is doing amazing! My sister once owned a calathea for all if THREE HOURS before she gave it to my mum because it was stressing her out 😂 On the blue vs green plant front - you probably just see a different range of blue/ green in the colour spectrum. We most commonly do this with blue/ green more that any other colours. I'm with Ross - they're green 😂 You two might argue over yellow vs green, and blue vs purple too! My dissertation was on how we see and respond to colour - its such a magical thing!

Ross is a natural! Well done! 🏆 Claire, you must be so proud!💚And your censoring is on point! 😆 On the tradescantia, I think it's actually a Calissia Repens and you don't even need to bother with propping them in water. Just put the cuttings straight into the soil and they will root and grow like mad almost immediately! Higher light for better color and tight growth; and even though it's considered a succulent it prefers a little more water. Doesn't want to dry out for too long. 👍

My venus flytrap also died back after flowering, I think it's quite normal. Mine bounced back in a few weeks and I've had it a few years now. Some people chop off the flower stems as soon as they appear to prevent them taking all the energy. I also bottom water mine with distilled water once of twice a week during the summer and less during the winter, and yes, they are very fussy about the water, use distilled or rain water.

Yeah I agree about fittonias needing a lot of water/humidity! The roots are extremely fine. Usually if it gets too dry, it will wilt like that but perks back up as soon as you water it.

Ross, you almost fooled me but you didn't introduce Yollie! LOL! Sorry to hear you've both been sick. I can completely relate to the spider plant issue! Last year - in addition to candy (I'm not an animal!) I passed baby plants out to the kids to give to their mom's. Now I've taken to bundling the babies with a tiny hair band and setting them in my Beta fish's house while they grow roots! No one is safe!! 😂

Ross's venus flytrap is most likely dying back either due to lack of light (carnivorous plants need a lot of light, especially flytraps) or water quality. A lot of carnivorous plants (especially the ones indoors) have evolved to grow in nutritionless, waterlogged soil due to being bog plants. The roots are practically immune to rotting from bacteria, and the only issue that may come from the roots is either root damage from travelling, or root burn from nutrition in the soil.

What a fun video! You had asked for some feedback. This feels weird because you have way more knowledge and experience with plants than I do but I do have a pretty happy Fittonia. I keep her pretty much the same as my prayerplants/calathea. I don't let the soil dry out, I try to not let the humidity drop below 55-60%, bright indirect light, bla bla. But they are drama queens and will "faint" when they're thirsty and perk up within an hour of being watered. But I also have very happy prayers plants pushing out multiple leaves every week and I keep my Fittonia nestled in with them and it's happy too. I use grow lights and a humidifier and only distilled water with them. They are extremely spoiled lol. Also about the venus fly trap. That's an entirely different animal. They actually do need moist/wet substrate all the time. And they can't handle anything but distilled or rain water on their roots. I keep mine in 50/50 coco coir and sphagum moss with a very shallow water resevoir of distilled water and never let it dry out. Never give them fertilizer. They can't handle any minerals or anything extra. They come from North Carolina USA in marshes with no nutrients. They get their 'fertilizer' from the bugs they "eat". The science behind it all is very interesting. But his is flowering so it must be doing well. However some of those heads could be dying from using tap water. Also, if it "dies" in the winter, don't throw it out. They do go dormant, and actually need about 3-5 months rest every year. UK winters will be perfect for them . But go ahead and let them get cold and you can stick them by a north facing window and forget about them over winter. They still need some water to not actually die, but in their natural habitat they spend part of the winter frozen and they look completely dead but they come back in the spring. There's tons of videos on KZbin about them. I just did what they said to mine and it's still alive and I repeated it here. I'm no expert. Anyways sorry for the novel. Much love to you both! :)

Both carniverous plants need lots of sun, a consistently moist soil, rainwater/distilled or reverse osmosis water (basically very soft water without minerals) and a dormancy period. Best to keep them outside in full sun even in winter. That traps die is normal, they only last a few times opening and closing, and it has new traps forming so that is good. Dont throw them out if they look worse in autumn and winter, they will get back, think of them as herbacious perennials

The carnivorous plants should stand in water but it has to be rain or distilled water (I only use rain water for mine). I always cut flowers back as soon as they appear as they can kill the plant all together but at best, a lot will die back. With high sunlight, the plants can grow quite large. Growth will be more stunted in low light. They also need to be over wintered. They need a dormancy period over the winter. Being put somewhere cooler and darker and kept damp with daily spraying, rather than standing in water. They are fussy but well worth the effort. Such fun plants. I love that Ross has now caught the house plant bug!

For venus fly traps and sarracenia, it is fine to absolutely soak them in water. As long as the water doesn't contain too much mineral content they won't rot. My sarracenia is currently sitting in water up to half of the height of the pot and they are absolutely loving it. They do however need a LOT of lights to thrive. My is next to a east facing window and I run a Pianta grow light for 14 hours a day just for it

I stopped keeping Fittonia plants because they're so fussy. I did find they did very well if I cut a large plastic Pop bottle in half, upturning it over the plant (keep the cap on!) They also do great in bottle gardens too (you don't see them much now). I think it's because they don't like moving draughts and do best in still, humid environments. They're easily overwatered, so wait until they droop a bit : )

29:44 I would highly recommend distilled water. I don’t have a sun trap but I grow Sundews. The other weird thing about the carnivorous plants is sometimes they push flowers when they’re stressed. Just be very gentle with the tap roots, maybe even refresh it’s soil and moss. Then use a much shallower tray. It’s totally good if you let the tray dry out even some of the soil dry out from time to time! OH and if you don’t have bugs… get bugs!!

I have a Venus Fly Trap and have been quite successful in keeping mine! 😊 Some tips for you: - distilled water is life - pick a substrate with low nutrients (eg: Sphagnum moss, perlite, peat moss, etc.) - keep the plant in a dish and keep the dish full of distilled water at all times (kinda like not letting a semi-hydro resivoir dry out) - lots and looooots of light! - Lastly, they definitely appreciate more humidity and will thrive in a terrarium, or cloche 😊 These are what's worked for me and I've kept mine thriving, sunstressed and flowering for almost a year now! I even pollinated it when it flowered and got seeds! 😆🥳

I had fitionia. She likes very humid conditions only way she was fine with me was when I kept her in the shower. She died, the leaves were completely dry and I was about to throw her away when I noticed perfectly healthy stems. I put her in the bathroom window moved her in the evening into the shower and then moved back on the windowsill she was thriving but I got rid of her as she was pain anyway. Too much for me, sometimes I kept forgetting and she was too dramatic to care :D

I had fittonia a few years back, and I used it to carpet the bottom of my crested geckos vivarium.. it was planted in there with a bromeliad and a snake plant i believe and it did really really well. I think it's definitely a plant for vivs in my opinion as they get regular misting, high humidity, and lots of light from the bulbs used for reptiles.

Fittonia are some of the MOST dramatic little *****. I had one and it would just go COMPLETELY limp when it needed water. Then it would perk right up. Weirdly satisfying. But, it just started dying. No idea why. But, I will say, if you want to do a “terrarium lite” IKEA has lovely cloches that are actually reasonably priced that I think Pedro would fit in. And you’d get to enjoy him more than with a bag. (I also bought a plastic cake serving stand and lid from Amazon to use for a similar situation and the plant ended up being huge when I got it and would not fit…)
