I returned from the RHS Malvern Spring Festival on Sunday with a LOT of new plants. There were so many amazing houseplant stalls and incredible, unusual plants to see, that I was definitely slightly unaware of how much I bought... But I've come home with 20 new houseplants. 20!! This is the biggest houseplant haul I've ever come away from anything with, but I'm really happy with my finds!

The first Hoya is a Hoya australis ssp Tenuipes (Carnosa has pubescent undersides). I’ve grown the ssp Tenuipes outside in Southern Louisiana and it has a pleasant Hyacinth smell. There are sooooo many Anthurium hybrids now that it’s hard to tell them apart, especially when they are so juvenile. The braided jungle cactus is a Rhipsalis paradoxa. A full basket of it looks divine.

@morningstar8187
@morningstar8187 21 күн бұрын
For the monkey tail cactus, make sure it gets as much sun as possible. There’s a misconception that they are jungle plants that don’t need much sun, but that’s not true. They grow on cliffs above the jungle canopy in Bolivia and are exposed to direct sunlight. Without enough sun, it won’t grow uniformly and won’t develop as much hair.

The nematanthus is also known as a goldfish plant!! Yes haha they look a lot like variegated holly or boxwood plants, which are evergreen plants found outdoors for landscaping. I said the exact same thing when I first found out about them, but they are actually also known as goldfish plants! That’s because their blooms (mostly in shades of orange, red and yellow) resemble those goldfish with big bellies 🤭 More mature plants with longer strands look absolutely gorgeous as hanging baskets especially when blooming en mass! They actually look like schools of fish swimming through seaweed.

Selaginella are a genus of mosses that do not have spores. They can be propagated very easily by cutting, and they root prolifically. S. uncinata are a legitimate "low light" plant, that have a blue tint depending on the light. The color is not a pigment but part of its physical structure, like how crystals can shimmer different colors. I have trouble getting these to grow outside of an enclosure, but it's possible. Dont let them dry.

The bushy garden plant that you might have had in mind when seeing the Nematanthus Gregarius Variegata was probably an Euonymus fortunei "Emerald Gold". We have them in our garden at various places, they are a bright golden spot amongst all the other greens, and can be cut back regularly to maintain a nice shape.

Lovely plants 😊❤ For the plant cutting you picked up from the floor, I believe it’s rhipsalis paradoxa. I am quite into rhipsalis and jungle cacti, and r. Paradoxa is one of my favorites! For propagation, I’d recommend you put it directly into a well draining potting mix, with a few centimeters of its bottom under soil. From my experience, r. Paradoxa is quite prone to rot, so just be mindful of letting the soil almost completely dry out. It is a fascinating plant with a very unique shape and growth pattern. Hope you have fun growing it!

Once you've done one you keep looking at it and thinking how you can do it better, or you keep finding the 'perfect terrarium plant' and you need to make another one. You have been warned 🤣 pinguicula have been great in my terrarium, but the drosera capensis has been brilliant for decimating the fungus gnats. About anthuriums, the variation happens naturally if they are being produced from seed, sometimes clone variation happens even in tissue cultures. I have 4 crystallinums i bought different times, one is almost completely silver, one has thin silver lines, one with thick silver lines and darker leaves, and one that barely has any lines and it is also dark.

I have a Hoya australis with smooth undersides that looks similar to that second plant. I've also had a couple small Hoya australis lisa, and they did seem to have leaves that grew and felt noticeably different from the australis. The lisa leaves were a bit more unpredictable in their growth the way that hoya leaves sometimes can be while the regular australis leaves were usually more uniform. I think there are other varieagated varieties of the australis as well (if I remember correctly the aleksandre is one). I've gotten so many hoyas where it's just like "well, maybe I'll figure out what it is when it blooms."

The donkey tail succulent been looking for one for a long time is hard to find one that looks really chunky and full basket of it. Definitely one that you repot it once and leave it alone cause is so sensitive in dropping is leaves. Also that colourful sedum there are so many varieties of them they remind me of jelly beans. Another one the leaves easily drop off too. I also like the Pachyphytum succulent another lovely one with the same delicate leaves. I love these succulents but so hard to maintain. That one is Rhipsalis Paradoxa one of my wishlist plant but hard to find here. Harli G made a terrarium where she introduced some of her springtails, isopods, snails and worms. Which you can get some ideas. I am not a fan of insects they creep me out especially ones with loads of legs gives me the chills.

The Burro's tail I think could just be very strom farina on the leaves, maybe? The waxy/powdery substance that succulents develop for sun and weather protection. Meny succulents' colors are greatly dependent on the quality of the coating which is easily damaged by handling. Does it rub off at all or is the leaf as pale underneath the coating too?

100 % sure that is an Australis. The leaves are supposed to be smooth. Australis dorsn’t have fuzzy leaves.

On the Hoya, I think AH014 is also a possibility. I have one, and the leaves look very similar.

That was such a lovely video, but very dangerous ;-) I'm trying to not get any plants as I'm just in front of a huge renovation, but my wish list is already growing lol Thank you for sharing.

The Nemetanthus is a goldfish plant! (There are two unrelated genera of goldfish-Columnea and Nemetanthus) I didn’t know they came variegated! But looking at it, I wonder if it could be reminding you of a variegated Pittosporum. They’re native to China and Japan, but I believe they can be grown ornamentally outdoors in your climate. But anyway, Nemetanthus do grow a bit like a lipstick or a hoya, but much faster than a hoya and have adorable orange goldfish flowers.

Millipedes will most likely decimate terrarium plants. I have a few smaller North American species and buy live moss for them as they love eating it. I’ve tried plants with them and they don’t last too long. Fun pets, though, highly recommended!
