I was in a certain kind of hospital. They had a paper mural of marine life under waves. With the colored markers they allowed us to have I colored a beluga whale a royal dyed purle with a belly of beautiful gold using a bronze and then bright yellow marker. I colored two dolphins light blue and pink respectively, both with blushes on their cheeks. They were from a video game that I liked watching my girlfriend play, so when other young people (I was the youngest there in my early twenties) were admitted they knew someone was there, and that they could be alright. Thank you for reading.

Yall are all wrong. And sorry I'm late, but no one important is ever on time. Simply, This is about, he got cloned. All are. This is just their confessing song like all have. The real ones find out the truth of paedophilia and adrenochrome(they were mormon, against that), and want out, but in this game, industry, there's no out. So they get cloned and originals unalived, and the elites can control and still get the revenues. It can be said in more words, but like I said, to simply put.

I definitely agree and I'd go so far as to say it is a profoundly serious song that went over the heads of 99.9% of John and Jane Q. Public.. I was a agnostic scientist for 40 years, and it all changed three years ago as I dove into Quantum Mechanics (esp. Quantum Biology - see "Life the Universe and Everything" by Paul Davies), Human perception (sensory organs and brain cognition- see Donald Hoffman) and after many, many trips on DMT (makes LSD seem like weed) I am quite certain the "Star Maker" is the "All Consciousness" behind everything. The "Dream Maker" is the "program" for our universe and the life forms that evolve in it, and the "Space Man" is the psychonaut (or perhaps many monks who use meditation alone to reach where I went on DMT) is person (people) who understand the "reality" we live in is NOT The Reality - our "reality" is all in our minds. So, enjoy life's ride (for better or worse) and don't mind the maggots (ht to Mick Jagger's reference to the ugly in NY city in "Shattered).'

haven’t cried to a song in a while. i vividly remember watching this music video when i was younger and genuinely thinking it was about aliens based on the name of the song and just being drawn to the costumes and the sound of it. coming back to it after so long, older, and understanding it and relating to it and just thinking of how as a kid i didn’t understand the meaning to it, the lyrics hit me so hard. forgot how much i love the killers, such a perfect song.

I have autism. And while I wake up everyday and smile and help my coworkers, these thoughts race through my head at this time of night. About how dysfunctional I am, how different I perceive things. It is a painful thing when you can understand and sympathize with someone having a bad day, but you can't convey your own feelings and show them support. It hurts that everyday speaking to others is a struggle: I worry I'll say something to upset them. It hurts being brilliant on the inside, but being incapable of sharing my knowledge with others. The things I say or do, don't match what's in my head. My boss doesn't understand why I thank her everyday for letting me work there. Most people like me are confined to low paying jobs, or unemployment, or even left to die in negligent abusive group homes. But somehow I work there, as a Licensed and Certified Pharmacy Technician.

I'm fighting through a depression right now for the second time in my life, with professional help this time. This video captures the madness and loneliness that I feel very well. The idea of depression sometimes feels like explaining that aliens are real. People can't see your thoughts or feelings, but to me, they are my daily reality. I hope I can say goodbye to the voices of my Starmaker, Dreammaker and my Spaceman soon.

Even when you feel at your loneliest. Although I am a person you'll never know, I completely understand the way you are feeling. You are not alone. You can make it through anything believe me, I've fought a lot of my demons and I'm only 18 years old. The world is a strange place, I get it. But you'll feel happiness one day, in a way you have to basically fight your way through those feelings, be a warrior against those bad thoughts.

I've been struggling with depression and PTSD for a good many years. It turns simple existence into an uphill battle, and there's been a few times I've considered surrendering, but I can't. When I was a child, I didn't understand this song, but it made me happy, and I sang along. Now, I know the 'happiest', funniest people on the outside hide their pain behind vibrant façades like this. And when they smile, and tell you to your face exactly what they're thinking behind the guise of a joke, you might not notice. You might sing along. I'm 23, but the things I've seen and done to survive feel as though they'ved aged me exponentially. Sometimes, It's hard to see a future beyond the deaths, crimes, and despair that raised me up. But, I'm not ready to have my transmission televised, I have responsibilities. I'll keep going, and keep coming back here to show I've not surrendered. And don't you give up either, you're every bit as strong. It may not go away completely, but it does get better. You're not perfect, but no one is. Keep moving, strive for improvement, keep this life, or you'll miss out on the good times in store. Keep this life, it's the only one you get. ❤

Very true, but the song has nothing to do with suicide, but it is about death..... looking things over before taking a leap is a reference to a leap of faith, trust in ones own judgment and self belief, and you just might realise, from your very unique and individualised perspective, that it's all about you, the world is YOU, you experience the world within as if it were outside, making you a passenger of your own vehicle, you experience the true world while dreaming, there's a way or way's to invert that, and you can take the wheel of your vessel, and make the rules as you please, it's the fractal part of the mind and you like in dreams when your sky high lucid and free, that is reality, and most are living a nightmare, switch lanes my friend Freedom is inside.

Seriously guys this is about a suicide attempt, NOT religion or any dead person. You can check out some interviews with the Killers and find out which band member inspired this song. It was genius to draw metaphors between suicide and alien abduction. This is probably one of their best written songs, lyrically. Wordsmiths indeed.

Eli Olsen thanks but they have said this an interview about a certain member. They discussed the Day & Age album track by track. I'd just hate to say his name on here. Plus, if you watch this live, Brandon sings the second verse like he's trying to say "better not do it". It's not so bad. ;)

Thats nice and all but just because they say something in an interview doesnt make it true. Have you watched katy perry's documentary?? Not even half of that movie is true. Enough said on that. You can think that its about a suicide if you want, it doesnt matter to me. But im telling you right now its not. There is a second language, a subliminal language used to write not only this song, but many of their songs and many other popular songs by many artists. I know because i use this language myself in all the music i write. Like i said i can break down every line of this song to you if you e mail me. I dont tell someone im right unless i know i am and why i am.

Eli Olsen Hey I didn't mean to start an argument with you or anyone on KZbin for that matter. Songs can mean different things to different people so you can believe whatever you want. Music is art, after all. I just wanted to share what the artists have said about the song as I noticed that a lot of comments here are discussing on the song's meaning. Naturally, what the artists had in mind when they wrote the song would help. I have watched Katy Perry's documentary but I don't think anyone else other than her can say how "true" that all was so best leave Ms. Perry out. Again, I apologize if I've offended you in anyway. I have no doubt in my mind that you can break down this song line by line. I just believe it could be so much more taken together. After all, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Thank you for replying to me though, I appreciate your thoughts. Goodluck on your songwriting and happy holidays, Eli. :)
@EEps18
@EEps18 9 жыл бұрын
I promise you i wasnt arguing and you didnt offend me. Saying that only the person who wrote or made something can be the person who knows what the meaning is, is like saying only the magician who made the magic trick can figure out how to do that exact magic trick in the exact same way. I'm sorry but that is just not true. He might very well be talking about a suicide attempt also. But im not going off of what they have said in an interview. Or for that matter in the case of what i had said about Katy Perry's documentary, in the same way im not going off of what she was saying or not saying. (Because most of her music is using the same language that the killers have used in this, and other songs) Im going off of the "magic tricks" that i see and Im telling you what they are. When you say/show something to the masses you need to do it in a way that wont give away the secret to the "magic trick." Because you want the trick to work. And it worked! for both The Killers and Perry. And if somebody is going to figureout a magicians magic trick, dont you think it would be another magician? When i said i can break down each line of the song i wasnt talking about separating them, i was talking about showing what he is really talking about, AS A WHOLE, by simply showing what he means in every line. EVERY SINGLE PIECE of the music video is much more meaningfull then just a suicide attempt. you just need to know the "magic" they are using to see the "tricks" for what they really are. Again i promise im not arguing, i dont argue. When i could be wrong, i say "I dont know, you could be right." And when i know im right i state the facts and the truth. But maybe all of what im saying is falling on deaf ears. Beacause it is obvious to me that you have NO IDEA what im even talking about, am i right? Your eyes have probably been shut, like most people, for so long that you actually believe everything you see and just accept it as fact because you've seen it. But let me ask you something, does a magician actually perform "magic"? or does he simply do what he knows he can make you believe?

This song is not at all about drug addiction, it is most certainly about attempted suicide and depression. I love this song, the poetry and metaphors are amazing. Truly great lyrics. I've added commentary to each section, with context of the lyrics in terms of the themes of depression and attempted suicide. The song starts off with the attempted suicide victim awakening after being saved from the attempt. "It started with a low light, Next thing I knew they ripped me from my bed; And then they took my blood type, they left a strange impression in my head." [Song starts with the attempted suicide victim awaking to consciousness in a hospital after an inferred suicide attempt. The person first perceives a 'low light' which I imagine refers to the hospital bed light that is first seen. Once he awakes, the hospital staff moves him from the bed, take his blood. The line about, 'strange impression in my head' may refer to the confusion he is going through as he is coming back to reality, or I thought it could allude to the method of suicide, gunshot to the head, literally an impression (wound).] "You know that I was hoping, That I could leave this star-crossed world behind;") But when they cut me open, I guess I changed my mind." [Person acknowledged that he had intended to leave this world by killing himself. The line about, 'they cut me open' refers to the hospital staff saving him (if the suicide was by gunshot, the person literally got cut open to remove the bullet and treat the wound, which saved him). Then he says, "I guess I changed my mind" about the suicide, which I take as an ironic line because once he was being saved he had no choice but to change his mind.] "And you know I might Have just flown too far from the floor this time, 'cause they calling me by my name!" [The person is reflecting on his decision to attempt suicide and is realizing that he had started losing touch with the world and lost his grounding ("And you know I might have just flown too far from the floor this time)." In the last line of this verse he starts to refer to his depression or his inner struggle with depression and angst that still is calling him.] "And the zipping white light beams disregards bombs and satellites! That was the turning point; That was one lonely night!" [The person reflects on his confusing feelings and mindset just before deciding to attempt suicide, which was the turning point and a lonely night.] "The star maker says, 'It ain't so bad'" [The star making is the typical optimist supporter that will try to console the depressed person, and tell him that life "ain't so bad" and try to cheer them up] "The dream maker's gonna make you mad" [The dream maker refers to the type of supporter that tries to be encouraging and tries to get the victim to think about the future and their dreams, which is frustrating to the suicide victim, because the 'dream maker' is trying to convince the victim to stay motivated] "The spaceman says, 'Everybody look down! Its all in your mind!'" [The spaceman refers to a psychologist, which tells the suicide victim that all their feelings and perceptions are the cause to his depression and suicide attempt, that all his depression is in his mind. The tone of the line suggests that the psychologist is trying to peg the problem on the victim (all in his mind) and not on the outside world ('everybody look down!).] "Well now I'm back at home and- I'm looking forward to this life I live; You know it's gonna haunt me, So hesitation to this life I give." [He's moved back home and has been rehabilitated and is out of the pathological depressed mindset that he had prior to the suicide attempt. He can look forward to living, but the memory of his past depression and suicide attempt will continue to haunt him and worry him that the depression will come back. So he has a hesitation to the life he has known because he is not sure if the depression will return.] "You think you might cross over, You caught between the devil and the deep blue sea; You better look it over, Before you make that leap!" [ The newly rehabilitated suicide victim implores to the audience that, based on his experience, that they should think hard about the desire to commit suicide when they are in a very bad time in their life ('you caught between the devil and the deep blue sea" -- two very bad and daunting things to be between). The victim advises that anyone considering suicide really should think very hard about it before they attempt it.] "And you know I'm fine, but I hear those voices at night sometimes... they justify my claim," [The victim states that he is doing well, but his depression is still there under the surface, the, 'voices he hears at night that justify his claim' is a metaphor for the depression that still speaks to him and tries to influence his behavior] "and the public don't dwell on my transmission 'cause it wasn't televised..." [I love this line. It is a beautiful lyric which is a metaphor for the fact that the outside world does not concern themselves with the depressed individual because the depressed person doesn't directly project their depression outward and that the world doesn't spend enough time and coverage on the plight of depressed individuals] "But, it was a turning point, Oh what a lonely night!" [Further reflection on the attempted suicide night] "The star maker says, 'It ain't so bad' The dream maker's gonna make you mad; The spaceman says, 'Everybody look down! Its all in your mind!' The star maker says, 'It ain't so bad' The dream maker's gonna make you mad; The spaceman says, 'Everybody look down! Its all in your mind!'" "My global position systems are vocally addressed;" "They say the Nile used to run from east to west, They say the Nile used to run... from east to west." [The 'global position system that is vocally addressed' is a metaphor for his inner voice that guides him, as well as his perception of the world. The line about the GPS saying the Nile used to run from east to west is another metaphor. The Nile, in reality, runs north to south, and the fact that his GPS tells him the Nile runs east to west is a metaphor for his mind's perception of the world not being in sync with reality, he had lost touch with the world when he was depressed] "I'm fine, but I hear those voices at night, sometime..." [Further introspective lyric from the suicide victim that he is okay and he is managing his depression, but still feels depression resting under the surface.] "The star maker says, 'It ain't so bad' The dream maker's gonna make you mad; The spaceman says, 'Everybody look down! Its all in your mind!' The star maker says, 'It ain't so bad' The dream maker's gonna make you mad; The spaceman says, 'Everybody look down... Its all in your mind!'" "It's all in my mind, It's all in my mind..."

I don't get why everyone gets pissed about the suicide theory. I'm a suicide attempt survivor and I actually find the suicide meaning in this song uplifting. I still get depressed sometimes, but it's chemicals fucking with my brain. It's nice to hear "It's all in your mind" sometimes. And if you don't like that theory, just pick what you like. This is how I interpreted the song. I honestly interpreted it as a song about a man who had a completely normal life. The man was offered a chance to go on an adventure and after the adventure he accepted he would never be able to return to his normal life and the song is about how much the adventure changed him and wants to go on an adventure again

When I was 9 years old I watched this video for the first time on MTV and I waited every day to watch the video because I liked it a lot but I never got interested in knowing what the band was called or the song. Time passed and playing Guitar Hero I met When You Were Young and I fell in love with this song but this time I did search about the band, I remember that I entered KZbin and searched the band and all the songs that I listened to I liked, later I heard Spaceman and it was a wonderful moment at that moment I knew that I had listened to The Killers and I had not realized it. This song was the one that made me totally love this wonderful band❤️

No way. Queen is Queen The Killers are The Killers. The Killer's vocalist is no where as versatile as Freddie, but that's okay because Rock has always been something for everybody and there's space in Rock and Roll for everyone not named Freddie Mercury.
