I’m starting to question the value of multi cap openers on most boards. Unless you can leverage it into extra bonuses quickly, or one cap defends all the others, you have to spend all your troop generation on defense and even then you can’t keep up with someone who got fast bonuses
@trousersnake81

Ditto. Getting the feeling it really has to be more than just a second cap, either allowing or facilitating a bonus, or securing a Valuable second position across the board or in a strategic location.

1:08:24 I think the perfect opposite to this is a gym and the weights required. Gyms serve to have both adaptable weights (barbells) and unchangeable ones (dumbbells and kettlebells, medicine balls) [I use odd words as to not confuse people with free/fixed weights]. Overall, a fully decked out rack of dumbbells would cost multiple thousands of dollars alone, plus everything else would cost as much as a decent car per person, though memberships do enable people to have varied options to train to their hearts content. Golf clubs are odd, as obviously 99% of the costs in golfing would be land and maintenance of it, so clubs would make sense to be per say rented like bowling shoes, but we would never consider the idea of a person renting basketball shoes or any sports ball. That sounds fundamentally odd but the only real difference I see between them and bowling shoes being that they a) get sweaty from aerobic exercise, and b) are often suited to foot styles or playstyles, which wouldn’t work for standardised shoes. Cars in my opinion are rather just, for transport is essential for anyone, and public transport definitely makes shopping difficult, or travelling to unique places, plus renting a car/van/truck is tedious at best. Unless you live in a literal city (not suburban) and everything you’ll ever need is nearby or available for delivery, it seems as though private cars are essential, though if you only had a max of 2 passengers and only do light grocery shopping at any given time, motorcycles make far more sense (but buying in bulk tends to be cheaper). We could go further into this renting vs private ownership regarding resources. Your very home you live in? Your bed? You use them at topps for half a day if you ain’t a full degen or old person, and while having roommates/sharing an apartment with friends is a thing (ignoring living with family as that is more of 1 entity in my eyes), then why not share valuable city land with a colleague whilst under operation by a strata group or something akin to property management. Idk, I’m rambling, but where would you draw that line?
@stephencaron2862

Pete, when discussing thow great it would be to have the nicest gold clubs available whenever you went golfing, I think you are mistaken. The tragedy of the commons is that the "nice things I don't own", don't stay nice. In the most charitable of tellings, now everyone goes golfing, has no incentive not to smash that nice golf club on a rock because they don't know what they're doing, and that nice golf club is dented-no longer nice. Instead, the golf course buys poor quality equipment because there's no reason to buy nice ones just for them to be destroyed, and instead of promoting golf to the masses, now no one goes golfing because they don't have good equipment... Except those that /own their own/ nice golf clubs.

With things being owned publicly, the public takes on responsibility for everything. The golf club can always just ban the people smashing things. They can have a policy of "come to this course 10 times, and have the nice ones then" or use something like a deposit. There are many ways to answer this problem. In the end, even with all the losses involved, I think society (and companies) will gain a net positive. Your point, though, is a good one with other sports that have a higher consumption than a massive golf club. Car racing or road cycling for example - - but also, a level or deposit system would fix that easily.

@@TheKillPeteStrategy Variance, Pete. It only has to be true of some and variance makes that a certainty. It's correctly a truism that if you didn't earn it you don't value, and that also it applies. There's another point here; if it's mine via the principle of property rights then I can't be denied to use of what's mine because my social credit score has been reduced due to anti-social behavior and we decide what that is and yeah the rules were different the second before and have changed again since but that's not the point. We control you. That's the point.

@@TheKillPeteStrategy Pessimistic or not, the evidence that the tragedy of the commons is a very real phenomenon is undeniable. It does appear that certain cultures are able to maintain commons better IE commons of the Scandinavians or Japan. But don't just take my word for it. This is not something so difficult to test. If your theory held any water we would see evidence of it. What golf course can you name that does this? Surely with the money golf courses have coming in one entrepreneurial course owner would have thought of this no? The fact is, people have tried these strategies, and Stephen is absolutely correct, the clubs are ruined with in a year. I'll continue with a little observation. Simply stating you don't want to be political, does not make the following claims about how society should be structured, apolitical. political is defined by decisions or activities related to groups of people such as (get this) the distribution of resources or status. For example, by very definition, UBI is a political opinion. Non the less. Even if your political hot takes, require complete rejection of the basic human condition. I enjoy the content, and keep up the entertaining RISK games.

Question: additional Caps seem to be liabilities as much as they are assets. Like we saw black get two additional caps, however they haven't had tree times the generation - splitting their troops evenly among all caps made them have three weak caps instead of a strong one. And in the end they lost a cap along with all the troops on it. Now I wonder: would it have been better for black to abandon the middle cap and commit their troops to only two caps in orient instead?

In Fixed caps are absolutely an asset if they are properly used. You want your capital to be strong and open to help both guard what's behind it, and threaten to attack if someone pisses you off. In progressive multiple caps can much more obviously be seen to be liabilities.

If you think the only reason why quality varies is “capitalism.” I guess step one of my argument would be to open your eyes and view the world, in which the human value placed on virtually everything varies dramatically. Only mass production even comes close to generating personal property where quality DOESNT vary. corporate greed does some intentional quality variation, but to assert that as the only source of varying quality is completely divorced from reality.

To the money conversation: I see one problem if it comes to universal ownership. People respect the worth of a thing thing less, if it is not in their personal ownership. They didn‘t pay for it so they don‘t really care o much if it gets demolished. For example: dirty public toilets, or half broken down e-scooters. We also don‘t want to have every single step of every individual controlled to the finest detail. People need privacy. So how to you want to prevent this?

@@TheKillPeteStrategy Well, there are things we really need, these are oxygen, water, food, sunlight, etc., then we have things, that help us to provide ourselves with these ressources like, a glass, that can be filled with water, then we have things that we use every day, but are not necessary for survival, that, however, would be very noticable when suddenly removed, and then we have things, that we wish to have but can‘t afford. But, because I could change a diamond ring for water, if I wanted so, (and yes, it is, because someone would do that trade with me, who has water and wants a diamond for some reason, because he seems to value the diamond ring), this luxury good is also from value for me in the end. Anyway, to answer your question, in wich we all already meet out needs hypothically, i wouldn‘t need more water than i already have. The only valuable thing left, that comes to my mind, is: family, friendships, time with people together, talking with them, having fun with women, having grill parties, and being in flow with the nature around myself.

@@TheKillPeteStrategy Human nature and the purpose of consciousness, whether we like it or not, is not to be at peace, happy, or even content. The purpose is to maximize the chances of survival and reproduction; that's what all of our senses and thought processes have evolved to do. In other words, people who "have all their needs met, and will forever" will mostly still feel a compulsion to strive for more and achieve even greater levels of resources, comfort, and security. This isn't because they're somehow sick and broken, and don't know how to just be happy, it's the actual opposite. Humanity is wired this way. The somewhat (but not cripplingly so) anxious and unsatisfied hunter gatherer human was far more likely to survive and reproduce than one who is easily content. That's because even if needs are met now, there's more work that can/should be done to ensure the current state of prosperity continues. Someone who is easily content, however, won't see fit to keep working and improving their situation and think "good enough". Then when famine comes, their "good enough" food stores are less likely to last long enough, and their "good enough" shelter is less likely to survive unexpected harsh weather, etc. It's easy to think these ancient survival scenarios don't apply to us. That is false. Events a few years ago showed how easily global supply chains can be broken in a disaster scenario, and how quickly resources such as food can become scarce. Now, that disaster was fairly quickly resolved thankfully, but not every possible disaster that negatively impacts the global supply chain can/will be resolved quickly (or possibly at all). So even in a "utopia" where ownership is not necessary and all needs are met, I would still feel compelled to do more to secure the independence and access to resources of myself and my family. Not because I'm fundamentally broken, but because I'm human and that's our nature. To give a shorter answer, if you told me "You and all your loved ones needs are met forever, so what are you gonna do/value now?" My answer would be "I don't believe you, and even if I did I don't trust outsourcing all the means of the survival of myself and loved ones to others, my reliance on which would be easily exploitable when/if bad people were to come to power. So thanks for the resources but I'll keep working to ensure access to necessary resources for my family myself. That's my purpose, and that's what I feel fulfilled doing, so even if a machine, corporation, or government entity can do it more efficiently than I can myself, I'll still keep doing it."

@@Anonymous-ld7je really great analysis and I almost fully agree. I think my quibble would be with your definition of resources when you say 'I would still feel compelled to do more to secure the independence and access to resources of myself and my family.' My suspicion is that in an enviroment when needs are met; wants become the things that we strive and struggle to achieve, and that's a good thing. And I think that's consistent with your analysis of human nature.

Pete, I think you're partially wrong about transportation. I agree that most vehicles are parked 99% of the time and there's something inherently immoral(in part) to that arrangement. However, I think there is morality to the opposing view also, and the logistics of no personal vehicle ownership are poorly imagined. I can't bring groceries for a family of 4 on the bus, and having to wait for an Uber both to and from the store puts me at the whim of another person... And maybe THEIR car breaks down instead of mine and we're back to the same problem. Further, there's value and morality in independence in life; to not require someone else to do for me what I can do myself. There's definitely power in banding together to accomplish that which we cannot accomplish alone(ex: roads) but there's also value to owning vehicles.(And ownership in general, private property has been the largest driving force in raising the most people out of poverty worldwide)

Have you heard of Zipcar? Right now its not super popular, but I can imagine a world where car ownership is sparse and zipcars or equivalent are all over the place allowing you to use the vehicle when you need and then someone else can use it when you don't need to any longer. Especially when we have autonomous vehicles, now the zipcars can navigate around to help with the problem of having too many cars not being used stacked up in one location.

I know I'm late on the conversation here. The AI, true AI, not the crap that we see mostly right now, has the potential to free jobs and create a society like you are describing. However like i have pointed out to others I've had conversations with, AI is still a tool, it's like when the shovel came out, we stopped needing 6 guys with rocks to dig a hole, 1 could do the same amount of work. However you still need someone to make that shovel, someone to teach that 1 to dig that hole, and someone to supervise. Then the tractor came around, now you got rid of 10 guys with shovels, but still need 1 to operate, 1 to teach, 1 to fix.... You get the point. AI is a tool, people will get displaced, the smart ones will move to being the supervisors or the ones making the AI. At some point, maybe in 50, 100? 150 years? Maybe it can all be by AI and robots. Then we can be free. However this needs to your other point, ownership. Giving up the freedom of ownership will be very difficult. Your golf clubs are an amazing example. You can have a set of golf clubs, best in the world, at your favorite golf course to use, but most people will refuse to use them over owning their shitty golf clubs they own. Until there is a way to engineer the human mind to not have possession, there won't be an ideal society that has no money. Let's not even get into that some people just get an enjoyment out of trading and bartering. Some people get pleasure out of being opposite too. And how will you ever be able to convince people to trust government to always provide what you need? After all even if it's AI ran, it's still going to be either government or corporation controlled, and both will prevent the ideal society. IMO to truly get to that society, there first will need to be a mass struggle, something that affects everyone, and not just the poor. While still having the ability to either keep AI, or rebuild AI quickly. The struggle needs to happen to force the distance from possession and enable trust. After all, we are only human and humans love war.

Pete first of all great video! I think we are approaching a time where although I don't think AI will take ALL of our jobs, I do think AI will take the vast majority (about 80-95% or so). When this happens, I think there will probably be in the not-worst case scenario a system where everyone or almost everyone will have a basic state of living that can be optionally improved by doing these extra tasks (like entertainment). I'm not completely sure what jobs will not be taken by AI, but one that will appear from this take-over would be jobs where people look for things done by specifically people. stuff like plays or stunts done by real people and probably also done with a physical audience rather than the internet. I'm not completely sure about any of this, this is just my best guess. I'm curious to know about what you think?

Current economic theory and practice is indeed as you describe it and worse, far far worse. The problem with the two organisations you cite is the same ♫plans for everyone ♫ that mindset that has been seen to fail horribly time and again. We are an egocentric species, and there's nothing to be done about that. That's the core problem. Variance in ideas of where one's vested self interests lie and variance in leverage and ability to achieve them. The idea of private central banks and the leverage to make them a reality sure as heck wasn't my idea or in my vested self interest, nor do I have the leverage to make that not a thing, (no more than anyone else does)... but it was someone's idea and was in theirs and they did. For those who have a better idea there's only one thing to do - implement the idea and prove it by doing it so that the success brings people into the new game. Bitcoin was a good idea, and the phrase 'Bitcoin solves this' applies correctly where it is applied to highlight Bitcoins superiority over fiat currencies... yet it isn't much being used as designed, is in fact being incorporated into the current corrupt system and has to all intents and purposes failed - probably.

I think universal income is a terrible idea for a couple reasons first, in my experience, judging both myself and people i have interacted with, idle people behave worse than active people and those people who take part in already existing social programs tend to become less active. and it also negatively affects our own natural selection, not to say eugenics was a good idea but implementing these vast social programs effectively does the opposite which is much worse. Genuinely stupid people who used to get themselves killed and shunned by society are separated from the vast majority of the consequences of their stupidity which gives them the opportunity to integrate into society, procreate, and make decisions that affect the lives of other people. Your idea of sharing everything and focusing in access vs ownership is insane. Imagine you're playing risk on your shared pc. I want to play now, stop immediately and let me play. What if there are 6 people waiting to play? Who repairs and maintains them? Who decides what gets installed on it? I'd rather own a pc and not wait in line.
@kenthartig7065
@kenthartig7065 8 ай бұрын
I don't think Pete meant that everything should be publicly owned. Something like a PC might be better off individually owned because of the reasons you listed. Likewise, sharing personal hygiene stuff like clothes or toothbrushes is kinda gross. However, when it comes to something like cars (as Pete mentioned), it is far more practical to use public transportation whenever possible because it saves resources that society could be using for other issues, not to mention the environmental impact reduced fuel usage would have. If nothing else, this one example is enough to at least say that we as a society might be better off reevaluating how important it is for us to own a good portion of the things we have. Come to think of it, I might be able to cook with the public PC idea, but if I were to start spelling that out, we'd be missing the forest through the trees. So I'll stop here.

50 minutes in and this is such an odd game. It's as if red and blue just don't exist. Red outnumbers everyone by a huge amount yet does nothing. Blue has had a clear line to take whites centre capital for ages yet makes no move. I find it absurd that white can hold that much board and for so long seeing how little troops he has.
@nabedane
@nabedane 8 ай бұрын
White was allowed to exist for so long because Pete used them to kill off black. Red and blue had no interest in going after white because it would have weakened them too much and they were in a decent position. Petes big open cap in the Netherlands meant whoever goes after his white buddy is in big trouble. Then, white was allowed to exist again because Pete used them when he saw they were going to do something stupid at reds border. This meant Pete just had to wait for them to fck up. He had nothing to worry about from blue because he was in noob corner and playing too passively all game long (never taking Scandi). This would have resulted in a Pete win anyway, it went surprisingly fast because red could not handle being broken a single bonus without losing any troops and then gifting the game to Pete. Bunch of noobs but still entertaining. Mostly entertaining to see how Pete used white to win the game.
@SirConfectionery
@SirConfectionery 8 ай бұрын
@nabedane yeah I agree that Pete played correctly but I still don't understand reds play whatsoever, red had a huge stack pointed towards whites 30 cap for ages with more troops in Africa that could reinforce whites cap assuming he takes it. I just find it so odd that they seemed to have such a large troop lead yet weren't involved in the board state whatsoever when they could have massively upgraded their position with that white cap for a relatively cheap price.

its funny isnt it. advancements in technoloy are already gearing up to cut out human requirements in the work yet there is a massive labour shortage and jobless population. it ties back in to what you were saying about how out current society promotes very few wealthy people at the expense of others. people could get jobs but with such massive inequality, jobs are either shitty corporate ones or small buisnesses that a lot of time cant afford good wages. its really starting to look like fuedal times where a small portion of people are at the top and the rest peasants. Im no economist so if one of you could tell me, what was is about the mid 20th century that made middle class actually the norm and not this hyper polarized wealthy or broke situation?

I disagree on your point of view on the car. The reason to own something like that is also so that you can choose when and how you travel. In a utopian society where one could inherently trust the powers at be, sure that makes sense. But in reality, if you allow the powers at be to decide when, where or if you can travel at all that can lead to serious consequences. If for some reason you upset the powers at be, they may take the ability for you to move around freely away from you. Your golf club example makes sense, but certain things like movement I don't think trusting the people who hold the power is a smart decision.
