Bismuth with a melting point of 271.8°C I believe. And gallium with a melting point of 29.9° while the flash point of almost all woods is at over 300°C. Put gallium or bismuth on a hot plate capable of reaching at least 272°C have it in a vacuum chamber see if the wood would absorb the liquid metal

The color-change of your pan is okay. Ferrous metals have a similar range of oxide colors, and each show at different temperatures. It seems your stainless pan did not get >1000 degrees on the brim, so you have the lovely blue/purple peacock color. If you were to sand Nate's leaf, and heat it gently with your torch, or even on the stovetop, you'd get to see those colors live as they change. Pretty neat stuff!
