I appreciate everything you share with us, Joanne. You help to educate us all with your stories. Thank you. 💚 Growing up with culture clash within my own home (two cultures, one severely disrespected and disregarded), I can attest to the validity of the American “elitist ideal.” American patriotism has been twisted into a horrible, Nationalistic pride, in this last century. While it does not apply to every American, it is pervasive, even in families that do not notice the more subtle notes of it, in their midst. I feel grateful for having recognized the clash and found a way to embrace both of my cultures, while remaining guarded against the insidious, elitist ideals, of either side.

Yes. I never left my shoes at the door and felt it a bother to do so until I finally had an aikido class that taught so, and formed friendships with families who follow this rule and now we have that rule in our home, too. I finally got educated! =) it is an odd thing in America how we learn to think "one way is the right way" and it is the "white man's way". I'm hoping this new generation of children who are more connected to the earth and its cultures and are re-connecting to their family traditions, or connecting to someone else's will move us further away from "one right way" and towards toward "ones way" is right. I'm glad to be on the "leave your shoes at the door" point in my life.

I’m glad I heard this story. I, a first generation Asian-American was born in Las Vegas and my schooling was very diverse. I didnt understand how people could be racist because I was surrounded by people of all colors. Then I started college in a small town in Utah with like 92% of the population being white. I realized how easy it is to discriminate or ridicule someone who looks different when your whole world is the same color. Of course not all people there were like that, many were nice. But it showed me how easily people could not care about a certain people’s rights when none of those people are even in their community. I appreciate having grown up where I have now and dont care for ignorant people’s remarks. I just know that they have yet to see a very wonderful and colorful world of culture. Be yourself and people will learn things new to them.

What a perfect response to the ignorance that spurred those hurtful comments. I'm so humbled by you. (in EVERY video you make). I think you are an incredible teacher.. And I'm so glad you share your healing, your history, your growth, your delicious food, and your knowledge of the culture/history behind it. To your mom- your daughter is right. The traditional community she wanted to share with us is why we come to her channel. We heal from her wisdom while she nourishes our bodies and souls with her clever writing(?) / story-telling over a pot of delicious food while she teaches us how to cook. Her mesmerizing methodology calls us to the circle of humanity, where she shares, so humbly, communion with us. Thank you for sharing that circle with us, in YOUR home. I hope you'll invite us again. I love you! You know, as you were talking about this assimilation that happens in America--which has happened, oddly, since one foreigner put his foot on this soil and declared it "theirs"-- and the passing down of our mixing pot of traditions, it makes me think of my ancestors, Scots and Irish, once kings in their own lands-we only recently learned, the descendents of whom moved here, and assimilated so well, just like your mom, giving up their languages, accents, and traditions... But no daughter or son came next to save those ties or traditions or even recipes. That all faded away until "where are you from?" literally ended in "I don't know." And thus it happened. Until this story, I couldn't see how it faded away. I always have an "aha!" moment when I'm with you. Genius connection! Thanks! I love you, too! And I wish you much success on your cookbook!

People are so silly and rude... as though the food itself is actually touching the floor/ground. It's in bowls, on plates, in containers, etc. And if anything does ever touch the ground or floor, you can wash it off... I mean where do people think the majority of their food comes from? Produce grows from the ground, and then we wash it & prepare it. It's totally fine. My Korean mom makes kimchi on the ground/floor all the time, and everything she uses is sanitized, and everybody loves her kimchi. And honestly, I bet your floors are cleaner than most of these people's tables & counters. Keep doing what you do. 💜

Preparing food on the floor of the kitchen in the US is a very normal thing I grew up with in a Lao home. Like most Asian households we have a no shoes in the house policy which is obviously for cleanliness purposes. Like Joanne’s mom, my parents laid down newspapers etc to keep the *floor clean. The beauty of preparing food on the floor especially when you have a small kitchen, but need to prepare a freak ton of food with sometimes triple the amount of people in the kitchen at once, is that it allows for more utilization of the kitchen space that one lacks and so you make use of what you have. I have very fond memories of all my aunties and some uncles, sometimes 10 people in our tiny kitchen, all huddled on the floor preparing different foods and then we’d have a huge feast as a big family on the floor of the living room.

I nearly teared up after listening your story. HOW CAN PEOPLE BE SO RUDE?I totally agree with you,People need to get that different people have different culture or simply different way of doing things, its doesn't necessarily have to be the ones way or particular race's way or just simply a culture's way,and that they need to learn not everything goes around them at all.I deeply apologise for whatever that happened i am not the one who said it or an american to relate but that issue pierced my heart enough to do so,as far as your mother is deeply concerned, i must say SHE IS STRONG,BRAVE AND GOOD PARENT to bring you up into what you are today.LET HER HUMBLY KNOW THAT WE APPRECIATE HER FOR WHAT SHE HAS GO THROUGH,AND DONE.I know i will get alot of hate after this,Well i don't care! This cruelty should be STOP!

My family came from Appalachia (Kentucky and Ohio). My grandparents moved to Washington state during WWII to support the war effort and it’s where I grew up. My point is that many Americans may not know this: my family grew up in communities that squatted to have conversations, cook or hang out in the kitchen, barn, porch, etc. I didn’t think I’d relate to this video bc I’m not Korean. What I realized is we’re more alike than not. ❤️🤗🤩

Never apologize for being you I hate when people feel the need to apologize for doing something that someone else sees as wrong just because its something that they aren't used to also I love the recipe it looks great and can't wait to try it ❤❤👍

People need to know that there are many different cultures and traditions..i come from south asia (India) and most of our food is prepared on the 'floor' especially in villages, and no it's not unhealthy at all. All of the food is healthy and delicious! This same bs people said when they learned that we eat food with our hands.... Btw i love your channel, and the food you make! You inspire me so much! Thank you!

Lol my mom, cousins, and aunty’s prepare food on the floor all the time. We all obviously survived. It’s always the uncultured swines who have some BS to say about the way we do things. Hug your mom for me!

@@shellyburke7703 ummm I’m not sure if you’re referring to me as sister but I identify as a cis-male. LOL all good though. Wouldn’t be the first time someone has called me sis or sister.

I’m bouta get my dad in the kitchen because I suck in the kitchen also I’m glad you never take that hate to heart because I look up to you and your mom how hard working your mom is you because of your realness and you guys can make your life kimchi however you want to and I’ll gladly sit down and eat it with you, yeah that is one of my dreams to sit down and eat with you and if possible cook with you which I will technically be doing while making/eating these potato donuts and every other recipe ❤️❤️
