The Nth Room case: The Making of a Monster [Documentary on online sex crime in Korea]

This documentary film is supported by the Judith Neilson Institute's Asian Stories project, in collaboration with Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, Indonesia's Tempo magazine, the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, and Manila-based ABS-CBN.
In July, 2019, two college students who call themselves "Team Flame" first broke the story of the "Nth room," a massive digital sex crime case where perpetrators blackmailed women including underage girls into performing sexually explicit acts on camera, with thousands of users paying in cryptocurrency to watch.
What Team Flame started off ― an investigation into distribution channels of illicit, hidden-camera videos in the hope of submitting it to a journalism exhibition ― ended up revealing a nationwide scandal in Korea that horrified the public.
Interactions among those involved in the digital sex crime-ring first began on social media services such as Twitter before conversations were moved to Telegram ― an encrypted messaging app. All of the exploitative videos were then distributed by chat room operators on Telegram to paid-up members. The number of users of the Nth Room and the "Doctor's Room," where the sexually abusive content was uploaded, may have numbered anywhere between the tens of thousands to more than a quarter of a million.
Meanwhile, we're witnessing a similar phenomenon in other countries around the world ― sexual exploitation being transformed into a lucrative business ― with the advent of high-speed networks and sophisticated digital devices.
"There was also an incident in Hong Kong that was very similar to the Nth room case. We got a request from the authorities there asking us how the videos got taken down and deleted, so we shared everything we knew with them. There will be circumstances that are unique to each country, but the crime is fundamentally similar in nature," Seo Seung-hui, director of the Korea Cyber Sexual Violence Response Center, told The Korea Times.
Numerous Chinese-language chat rooms similar to the Nth room were also found on Telegram. "We've gained access to four of those chat rooms which are clearly abusive, and one of them has over 30,000 users, and there are thousands more in the other ones," Team Flame said.
"Videos being circulated in those chat rooms included sexually-exploitative videos from the Nth room as well as others that appeared to have been filmed in China. There were thousands, tens of thousands of illicit videos being shared and distributed."
To delve deeper into the evolving digital sex crime cases in Korea and across Asia, The Korea Times has been collaborating with four media organizations ― the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong, Tempo in Indonesia, and the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism and ABS-CBN in the Philippines ― on a special investigation into this issue over the last seven months.
This hour-long documentary explains what happened in the Nth room chat rooms, how girls fell prey to the perpetrators, and how the digital world and social media platforms provide an optimal environment for online sex offenses to take place. We will also be looking into how similar cases are being seen in other Asian countries, and how ― and which ― social media platforms have become a central hub for criminals in Korea, China, Japan and other parts of Asia.

But it's a fact that since kpop and K dramas gained popularity there's this view by young girls to teenage girls and sometimes even adults that "they're perfect". It was the friend of a girl being exploited who joined the groups in order to find out more about them. He tipped of the journalists. The journalists then spent a year trying to gather evidence, after which they reported on medias and newspapers. After several failed attempts, the police FINALLY took the case. None of them in the group chat reported the case to the police. And that's funking sad. They all thought it was perfectly fine

Changing laws is helpful but it is not enough. The change MUST come from the society and it is only possible through EDUCATION whether it comes from school or family. The way that the police spoke to the girl early on makes them almost as bad as the perpetrators themselves. Mistake or not, she came to them for help and it's literally their job to treat them as a victim instead of judging them for their actions. This sort of judgement and fear of how the people around them would see them after their story would come to light is I think part of the problem, alongside victim blaming, shaming, and lack of empathy to what they've gone through. It explains why most just don't come forward and ask for support, but justice should be a right that every victim is entitled to. If people are beginning to be hesitant to seek that, or not even thinking its an option, what kind of society would we be living in.

You know something that really bothers me after watching this, I was in Korea for work in 2017 and downloaded tinder for fun and I very distinctly remember this weird guy I matched with and added on KakaoTalk who asked me to write slave on my hand and arm which I found super weird and blocked him right then thankfully but now I wonder if he was somehow connected to this 🤢🤢🤢

I followed the case when it was first discovered by the team who poured their heart into investigating. I read every article about the monsters behind this hell. And I'll be honest, I still can't watch this documentary. Because I'm afraid that pain and anger for the victims will consume me again. I'm so thankful to the tireless teams who found these monsters and bring them to light, even if the current laws were so weak against these heinous crimes. I pray that the survivors have all the support and love that they need to heal.

I was nodding at the statement of one of the police officer about blaming and shaming of victims. It turns my soul stone-cold whenever I witness society choose to blame and shame victims. Sexual abuse is scary, but so far the ones in Korea scared me the most. There was a movie (true story) about that little girl who was kidnapped and her raper came to live in the same neighborhood. Then there’s the Nth room and Seungri’s case. The thing I find most scary is that they not only rape, but seek to trap you, hurt you, find pleasure when looking at pain and blood, and have absolutely no mercy until death. That….is scary.

I am s superfast reader (and I MEAN superfast) but it's impossible to read fast enough before the subs and texts vanish again. This documentary made me regain some hope in humanity. I know that in every country we deal with these kind of things but I saw a lot of documentaries about how difficult it is to report a sexual assault in Korea, and it gets worst when involves foreigner women (one of the issues being the language barrier), in my country it's hard as well to women report and be heard but, in general, there is less judgement when compared what I saw, through articles and documentaries, in Korea. And even a lot worse in other countries. What makes me hopefull are these people who investigated and really wanted to help these individuals. We need to educate our children about gender equallity, what is considered sexual harassment, how to respect others (doesn't matter the gender, color or sexual orientation), how to protect themselves and to open a way so they can communicate with their parents, family and friends without fear of being judged or shame. And we need to constantly educate ourselves in all these matter too, since I see DAILY adults act in a vile way. They should know better. Thank you so much for this documentary, I hope justice comes to the perpetrators and only love, suport and good things to the victims.

The lady at 28:04 mentions porn, saying it's not an offense. Right. But that's the start for a lot of these people. They start watching and after a while regular videos don't do it anymore. They seek more and more perverted and brutal stuff, skewing their view of women even more. Soon they start to seek out outright violence, and who knows if they will act out their fantasies on real people around them... I feel awful for those victims, hope they will heal 🙏🏻
