Having had some experience polishing some glass I will say that most of the 'scratches' that people want to remove can't be. Especially if it's deep enough to catch your fingernail on. You're not going to 'polish' away that much glass. In most cases what you're able to do is 'obscure' the scratch by smoothing out or polishing the rough peaks in the 'channel' or valley of the scratch so it won't refract the light. I use jewelers rouge sometimes and it also depends how hard or soft the glass is. Unless you use a machine polisher, with these light abrasives by hand you'll be working on it a while, which is safe but tedious.
@TheLabOtomy Жыл бұрын
Indeed, glass is really hard and you polish it with something really gentle. Success will depend on depth of the scratch and dedication. Thanks for the feedback.

Hey I'm trying to clean old fish tank glass from a broken tank. It's been sitting a while. I took tooth paste and actually added baking soda and went with a actual buffer pad since I'm cleaning a few feet worth of semi deep scratches. I see you are able to get some similar depth scratches out with just a cloth. Are scratches easier to get out of certain types of glass? Like tempered VS non tempered? Low iron, or regular, etc? I'm having a heck of a time hah. Needed a break 45m with the buffer didn't make a dent... I'll try the steel wool method haven't tried that yet. Thanks for the tips and possibly direction on what I may be doing wrong or a more aggressive method if my scratches are deeper than I think. Not sure what constitutes a "deep" scratch.
@TheLabOtomy3 жыл бұрын
A deep scratch is one that catches the nail. The thing with glass is that all scratches can be removed, BUT the deeper scratch, the longer it takes (and yes sometimes, that will be hours... or minutes long with a rotating tools with pro-compound but the risk of cupping the material and weakening a spot). The glass is extremely hard and we have to rub it with something really really gentle... like sanding a wooden board with 4000 grit sandpaper... good luck!

Hi Amanda, the first thing to check is how deep the scratch is. If it catches a nail, then polishing it back to a smooth surface will take a lot of time (remember we are rubbing something really gentle - not to create additional scratches - against something really hard). At the end of the video, I have listed other products that professional repair guys use to fix deeper scratches. Hope it works out for you.

Guess this is why it didn’t work on my car. Have a fine scratch from some grit of something that must have been in the wiper when on, as follows wiper line, but only like a 10-15cm scratch, not the full span, which is odd… Which begs the question, if the glass is so tough, why did it scratch? Can only see it when light hits it right, so unsure what could have done it. Only when the car was like 3 months old too. Annoying! But yes the toothpaste and sodium bicarbonate didn’t work! @TheLabOtomy4 жыл бұрын
Hey Uncle Rick, sorry to read you had no luck fixing your sliding door. Fixing scratches depends a lot on the nature / deepth of the scratch: the deeper the scratch, the more polishing/grinding time needed (just like sanding wood). While with sanding wood we can accelerate the process by choosing a low grid, this is not possible with glass since would create extra scratches: so imagine sanding wood with 4000 grid, how long would that take.... in your case, the next step (if still looking for one) could be to investigate Cerium oxide based glass polishing products coupled with power tools. This is what pros typically use in glass renovation but is NOT part of a standard toolbox. Also, even going for this option, be sure to NOT overdo it or you may even create a bow in the glass. So all about small progress, check, small progress, check again and never overdo it. Hope that helps!

One pro tip that I discovered MYSELF: If you have circular scratches, DO NOT TRY TO Rub WITH A CIRCULAR MOTION. Why daddy? Because you will make the scratches even worse and deeper and harder to remove. What’s the solution daddy? The solution is easy and fast which and I will show you who’s the boss: 1. If the scratches are circular, then do not rub in a circular motion. Rub in a vertical motion for more than 2 minutes straight and less than 5 minutes then in a horizontal motion for more than 2m and less than 5m, why daddy? Because if you rub too much straightly you will end up messing the work you’ve done WITHOUT knowing. (and make sure to check the progress if you feel uncomfortable) 2. If the scratches are horizontal, then rub vertically. Why daddy? If you rub a horizontal scratch horizontally you may scratch the scratch deeper and make it harder to remove. 3. If the scratches are vertical, then rub horizontally . Why daddy? If you rub a vertical scratch vertically you may scratch the scratch deeper and make it harder to remove. 4. The same with tilted scratches like half horizontal and half vertical scratch, just reverse the ways. (If it’s vertical, rub horizontally. Or if it’s horizontal, rub vertically)
