I wanted to first apologize for my bad English in my comment because it's not my native language so I'm sorry if you can't understand. But it bothers me too when people not only Koreans take black culture, but only the parts they like and disregard the black community. They don't include them in their music videos or even credit them. Or they don't find what they're doing offensive. I like the singer Dean a lot because he talks about being inspired by the black community and he obviously has shown favoritism for his black fans. But he stays respectful, and isn't out there wearing dreads and thinking he grew up in the hood. I think sometimes the Korean rappers only promote stereotypes of the black community. I like to sing and rap too, and I came from a not so good background, but I don't say I'm from the streets and that I hate police or that I do drugs. That's just stereotyping. I prefer to create my own music, but I am inspired by many black artists. However, I listen to their stuff, grab inspiration and then turn it off and create my own work instead of trying to imitate it. Sorry for long comment and if it doesn't make sense 😞

I feel like cultural appropriation is addressed appropriately for a lot of other cultures except for Asians. It's socially unacceptable to wear dreads and pretend to be rappers without really understanding black history or culture but butchering Korean and only caring about K-pop? No one really bats an eye other than K-pop fans that see through this BS. Orients just are "meant" to be fetishized at this point because of the influence of soft power from Japan/South Korea. Like I know it's hard for black people when people only appreciate the "fun" sides of black culture but do K-pop fans really care about the deep depressing history of Korea? No. Do they care about the soldiers that continue to be blown up or drown in ships today so Korea can be a free country and produce great quality entertainment like this? Likely not. If anything, I found K-pop fans are strangely more likely to be sympathetic towards the Japanese because they are tired of Koreans being "annoying" with the constant political battle. I understand how black people feel but black people must understand us as well. There has to be something mutual. I also came to realize that you can't sell something to a bunch of impressionable youths and call "cultural appropriation". Koreans don't inherently hate black people, it's just black people have naturally built up a negative image in Korea themselves. When black rappers come to Korea, most of the comments are extremely positive. It's how you present yourself man.

Whitney Titus Canada is the closest country culturally to America they have almost as much diversity and a lot of the sane pop culture. He has lived in a diversified country long enough that you can't just simply say "oh he didn't know" because he had every opportunity to know. He chose to be ignorant. Black face is a known evil in America and Canada and you can not equate it with blonde wigs. He was being ignorant on purpose.

Whitney Titus I honestly don't give a shit about any of this I'm just saying that what he said was wrong, it was, and it would be perceived differently from someone who is completely ignorant about the ramifications of his words, but he isn't. He completely knew what he was saying and he most likely knows the history of black face to some extent and yet he still decided to say some dumb shit like that. It's not about being a victim it's about the fact that black people are deemed as ugly by these people and the braids and natural hair are deemed as unprofessional and dirty. To equate that with something that is socially acceptable like blonde hair. Let's not forget that compared to white people Koreans think we're poor, stupid, scary, and unattractive. Yet they borrow our culture. I don't have a problem with the borrowing per se. I just have a problem with the fact that they aren't always respectful about us. They want to be like us, but they don't want anything to do with us. That's a shame.

That's the def of ignorance and lack of knowledge. Let's say it was Indian culture and they wore Indian clothing as their style how weird would that be? They r neither Indians nor do they know Indian history. Black culture has become so popularised and mainstream that it has washed out the original history of hip hop, rap etc. Ppl out here wanting to wear durags but don't understand that our culture isn't some fashion tool but a practical head tie for black hair. @sasha50814 жыл бұрын
I will say this about Gdragon. He’s very respectful and understanding of the culture. You even showed videos of him dancing with missy Elliot and other black background dancers. The first western artist he ever worked with was flo rida (african American). He demanded an entire black band to perform at his and Bigbang concerts and performances (the band is called the band six). He then asked them to work with blackpink as well. Look up on KZbin of the band six talking about gdragon. They also agreed with him being the king of kpop and talked about him with the most respect. Gdragons doesn’t have “one” style. All his music, hairstyles, and even clothing is always changing and very different. That’s why he’s known as one of the most versatile korean artists ever. He was “inspired” by wutang clan to rap. It’s not appropriation, because appropriation is used in a negative light. If it’s appropriation , then Eminem and BTS culture appropriate because they rap too.
@sasha50814 жыл бұрын
Robbie Atkinson ah, I see that now, but you only vocally mentioned what bts did...twice. I thought you u vocally give more examples of certain individuals. Plus, gd and Taeyang are very close and have similar tastes. And you added a lot of a lot of performances that had gd and Taeyang in it, so I thought you were grouping them together. But even with Taeyang, being a Nigerian woman myself, I honestly feel like he had good intentions with what he said. As I said again, appropriation is used in a negative light. He’s mentioned numerous times how much black artists have inspired him, and he’s never tried to pass off what he does as his “own” (which would have been straight up appropriation if he did that). As what you said in the video, he even said “black” genes, which is giving credit and appreciation for the black culture, with a small joke because he said genes. I think he was very honest for what he said, cause most people wouldn’t have said that. I could see how what he said looks bad, if you view it in a negative light, but I don’t think what he said was bad considering his intentions.

What a great video. Very insightful, and expresses very well with sound arguments everything I think about K-pop. Cultural appropriation is a complex topic and most people don't seem to understand it. There is nothing wrong with appreciating another culture or borrowing from it- it all depends of context. But I feel it becomes really problematic in the commercial sphere, where capitalism reduces/ strips everything cultural to its barest denominators for profit. It raises ethical questions when related to art forms such as hip-hop because these are not just music or a fashion style but a movement, a way of life. This should get more views!

I know this video was made a while ago but it still has relevance. But for me personally I think we need to cut South Korea some slack because their music only really became popular on an international level a few years ago and there's still a lot for them to learn about Western and African music genres and styles. Really, in order to get a good understanding of the racial tension and past musical history in countries in North America and Europe, you have to be raised there because it's honestly such a huge and deep seated issue. I don't mind them incorporating black and white style into their videos but I just think they should know where these genres first emerged. They're only getting more aware with time though, so I see some exciting new international music collabs in the future.

I understand your point, but at the same time I think we have to realize that Korea was an almost completely homogeneous society until the last 20 years. They never had to worry about offending someone else's culture because there was only one culture that existed there; Korean. Even today Korea is almost 90-95% Korean and they're only now learning about the complexities of living in a multicultural society. I think the fact that Korea has incorporated Western style and music into their daily lives is a good start to understanding new cultures, but these things take time. I mean half of these idols haven't even seen a white or black person in their entire lives, let alone understand their cultures. We have to be patient and try to teach Koreans about our cultures, rather than force these changes on their people. They'll learn about us with time. Until then we just need to encourage them to understand the origins of these styles and allow them to explore our cultures themselves. I wouldn't take offense to any of the insensitive things these idols do towards western culture because they honestly don't know.

@@pilarrivera2547 The idea of cultural appropriation is bogus simply due to the fact that by definition everyone does it, including the black community(s). Culture is a product of the environment that you were raised, and the mannerisms you pick up along the way. You stick Tarzan in the jungle, he’s gonna adapt to his surroundings. We are all influenced by each other’s cultures and when people try to gate-keep that’s where the problems start. I was more or so just pointing out the double standard that seems to exist. People should keep the same energy when the topic of cultural appropriation comes up. When it seems that the conversation is very one sided, it takes all the credibility out of the argument. As far as Asian being allowed in the culture. You would find it very difficult to name an Asian artist that is both successful and more or so accepted by western society. @RobbieAtkinson_raytc4 жыл бұрын
If you really admire those who inspire you then do your research about what shaped them--including their history and the culture they were surrounded by. Don't just copy them because you'll deal with the consequences of public scrutiny if you're not careful.

Honestly it is simple, if you don't want to get hated for loving a Korean culture don't hate Koreans for loving your culture. You go around saying they don't know the history of black culture, well Korean culture has it's own history as well, tragic history and good history but you wouldn't care. And some saying "but why is it not okay if white wear it." Its okay, but just too many white artist changing the culture to a different name, that it is risky to let white wear it. Koreans are raised with respect of culture more, so its not something they can do easily. And those saying 'they wear black culture but don't have black people in music video." Dude! Come on! And to those saying "They always act like thug if they are hiphop, it gives wrong reputation to black." Hmm excuse me.. Last time I check, hiphop has always been talking about ass, Bitch and acting like a thug. Its just like saying "you can do ballet without wearing bellringer cloth. Sadly, but being a tug, cursing is the hiphop culture. It is what black themselves portrayed. My own worries is " if you ever put a black person, don't only put us in thug video kpop idol, that shit is your choice to be thug.

truthhurts bitches I actually hate when Americans borrow from other cultures and do it ignorantly. Seen it way too often. Nothings wrong with loving a culture but if you love it, at least understand it. As for stereotypical representation, figured music videos are at least a start for Korea when familiarizing themselves with the concept of inclusion. Then that can be diversified to better representation. Yeah. Some black artists fit into the destructive, degrading mold that the entertainment industry has already established for them. Some don't.

I saw your video and I truly think that people who think like you don't have culture tbh live your life and leave them because I don't see them disrespecting anybody and I don't see the point of doing this video, first speak about those white people trying to be black for example saying nigga or starting to say that they behave like black by listening to rap or hip-hop songs and swear a lot or fighting or joining gangs , those type of people are disrespecting black culture, second, they can wear whatever they want as we live in a free world. You can buy any shirt or clothes you want and wear them but don't disrespect the culture of others that is what they do, I never saw gdragon saying that he wants to be black so he would be a better rapper or taeyang that I want to be black or tan his skin darker, taeyang has a dark skin since day 1 and he always wear this type of clothes since day 1 look his audition and YOU will see. And even dreads they can wear it what is your problem. I am a black African ok I was born in Africa and I live in England and I don't mind about what they do since they never offended my culture, at contrary I like that the do a good music and consider this culture so I don't want to disrespect you but this video made me so mad that I want to block it so u don't upload it again because you are encouraging an unnecessary hate between black and Koreans that is showing how racist you are and please don't tell me that you don't wear wig because that is a cultural appropriation as well by copying white culture so stfu please and do other type of video

@warriorforgod59494 жыл бұрын
@@RobbieAtkinson_raytc There is no anger here. Just pointing out the hypocrisy and, a ridiculous claim. They want to be inclusive yet, they do not even care about Asian community. Yet,, they want a credit because, K pop is doing well. We all share and use other people's cultures. All black people have done was sold music records to Korean people. That's it. They made money off it. And, the rest was done by Korean K pop artists and, others.
