In this video, I show you 10 ell accommodations that can be applied to tests for understanding accommodations for ELL students for ELL students and assessments. These ell accommodations will give your English language learners access to the content for equity and comprehensible input for assessments. The 10 steps in understanding accommodations for ELL students are:

5. Flexibility in Responses Accepted 2:40

From one teacher to the next, great video! Thanks for sharing. I love the chunking strategy. It definitely reduces frustration. Read alouds are great, although administration doesn't always welcome it during a formal assessment. Also, I love that you said something to the effect of: assess WHAT you teach but also HOW you teach. This should be a rule that every teacher lives by.

Do you have references that support the recommended accommodations, especially the second accomodation, having the test read aloud? Is there research and/or references that you know of on accommodating beginner ELLs, specifically around reading test directions and passages in exams out loud to beginner ELLs? Thank you!

I am a special education teacher K-4 in Maine. I am currently taking an ESL class for my master degree program. Due to COVID, and summer, we needed to conduct our clinical field experience by researching online resources. There is some very good material out there, yours included, and actually I was able to really zero in on what I needed, which I likely wouldn't have captured in one 5 hour classroom observation.
