You are my kind of people, Kate. Giving up you winter food to make the goose happy. You have a heart of gold. You have heard the saying, “ how a person treats animals tells me all I need to know about them”. If my animals aren’t happy and comfortable, neither am I. Bless you!!

Kate, I’m on partial medical leave right now and, serendipitously, have discovered your channel, and it is the most lovely company I could ever have wished for. Quite healing. Thanks from over here in Salem, Massachusetts in the States. Living and working in the big city can be so depressing - everyone is walking around with their faces in their phones - or worse, driving with their faces in their phones. Your channel invites me into a slower-paced world that seems focused on what actually matters. Just lovely. I hope you continue to enjoy making these videos so we can keep watching them!

Oh, I love these videos. In the heat of august I can't do much outside here in Michigan. I recently purchased a Patrick Green drum career at a garage sale! Found out afterwards what a treasure I found, cheap! I have watched these videos at least three times over the years, first to watch and learn the spinning, and now to watch and learn about the carding. This is definitely my ASMR! Your soothing voice, the sounds of the carding and spinning and I'm instantly relaxed. Thank you for that! 💓

Hello Kate, Did you just say boring? I could watch you for hours. And you know what, people who don't care about crafty things, won't look at your videos anyway. Everyone else will certainly be happy about every detail. I'll never be spinning because I don't have the equipment. Which does not stop me from watching videos like yours again and again with much joy and with great interest. To the snow: here with me in Germany are about 2 cm. But I'm really slow in winter. Spring is already around the corner? Just wondering which corner he chose. It just helps to wait, drink tea and spin. Greetings from Claudia from Germany

I don t know if anyone is answering after 6 years, but a couple of technical questions. About 40 years years ago I went to evening classes, for spinning , weaving & dyeing, at the time I had an Ashford traveller wheel, some years later, about 15 when my husband joined a daughter on a gap year in NZ he went to the Ashford factory & ordered me my “ new “ !!!!!!! wheel , I haven’t really used it a lot in the last 20 years, but on finding your channel, looking for felting information, I found the one you were making the tweed curtain backed with Indian squares for the composting toilet in the cabin. I ve been an avid viewer since the start of the year ( not patreon I m afraid as I haven’t worked how to). Anyway I ve decided to do some more spinning fleecehoping it s like riding a bike , however I m an undiagnosed dyslexic & struggle a bit with opposites, so actually first question is , - Is it clockwise for spinning & anti clockwise for plying? Next question is I seem to remember having the small end of the bobin facing for spinning & large end for plying , or is it the other way round ? I remember something about counting to 4 for plying too? Then finally remember using the hooks on the left for spinning & right for plying , but on my new wheel they are upside down on the right, so can t see how to use them. Any comments would be appreciated, I had a little practice this afternoon, it seemed to go well & I enjoyed which is the main thing , & cos I ve such a phenomenal memory it brought me back to our lovely , lovely teacher Margaret who was always SO positive about everything, she told me I had soft hands when spinning , which created bouncy yarn , or perhaps she was being kind about my lumpy yarn, which incidentally I do love, looks certainly hand spun in my opinion. Thanks Kate for the wonderful videos & fuelling my renewed crafting experiences.

When you set the yarn with the boiling water and the slamming on the table... you are actually felting the 2 plys together. Which gives your yarn strength and keeps it from unwinding. So if you find your yarn is loosey goosey, next time you need it to beat it bit longer. (you can rewet this yarn, but nobody ever does. I guess it's because I've taken my spinner's cap off and am going in full weaver's (or knitter's) mode. 💖🌞🌵😷

There are lots of descriptive words I could use to describe you but "lazy" definitely is not one. There are so many simple steps that are needed to produce even one skein of yarn that I can now appreciate a homespun/knitted gift much more. The snow depth is SO familiar. Hope you have a good snow shovel. Thanks for the video, Kate.

Hi Kate. I know this is an old video and I'm not sure if you ever go back and read comments from old videos, but I have been watching you for a while now (discovered you while working from home during Covid) and I love your videos. So relaxing to watch. I'm an avid knitter and have just recently started learning to spin and I loved this set of videos on carding and spinning and plying the yarn - what gorgeous skeins you made. Just lovely. I'll have to go through some of these and see if you knitted it up into anything yet. Thank you for your awesome, stress-free videos; I look forward to each and every one. PS. Pink and green are the best colours - my favourites too.

Hi, Kate! I realize that this is an older video, but I only recently discovered your channel (heard about you while watching Gayna on Tales from Cuckoo Land during her June vlogs), and I’ve been binge-watching some of your older videos because I enjoy you so much! I read through all of the comments for this podcast to be sure I would not be repeating something that someone else might have mentioned, but didn’t see anything on this particular point, so I will go ahead and mention it. I heard you say at the end of the video that you weighted your skein after soaking it and hanging it to dry. This used to be a fairly common thing to do in order to “tame” the ply twist. However, it is generally discouraged nowadays because if you knit with a skein that was weighted after plying, and then block the finished item, the yarn will shrink back to its pre-weighted configuration. For a sweater, this could be disastrous! The preferred approach is to put in enough ply twist to offset your spinning twist so that the yarn hangs in a gentle “U-shape”. This can be checked during the plying process by doing a simple ply-back check several times during the plying. Hope this makes sense! And I hope you and your family (both children and animals!) and garden are all doing well! Take care!
@thelasthomelyhouse5 жыл бұрын
Thank you - that makes perfect sense! I will alter my practice accordingly. I am longing to get my spinning wheel out again - there seems to be so little time this summer to do all the things I want to do - I must make some time this winter as I have some lovely fibre! xxx thank you
