My cat Annabelle always helped me do my counted crossstitch. She was totally fascinated where my boys had no interest at all. Norma is precious. All cats are precious. I came from quilters. Love this.

Isn't it lovely to have our cats close to us. I've had so many over the years. As many as seven. Now I have just five. Four boys and one little lady of advanced years who rules the roost. She is always next to me on the sofa. Dear Lily and Finn, Beau, Clemmie and Sirius. I am blessed.😊

I make my binding 2 and 1/2 inches, fold it in half and stitch it down. I sew the back by hand. It makes a slim binding.

Hello my special friend! I know this is an older video but since it included a segment about the binding on your quilt, I thought it was a great place to leave a comment. I have been busy for the last couple of weeks making a very special quilt as a Christmas gift for a friend. Since I usually make quilts for charity, I usually sew the binding down on both sides with my machine just to make sure they wear well over time. But for this one, I decided to hand stitch the binding in place. I sewed the binding to the back with my machine and folded it over and hand stitched the front down. I'm not much of a hand sewer so I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to finish without jumping over to the machine. But I'm happy to say that I stitched the entire quilt binding down by hand and it looks absolutely lovely! And... I thought of you the entire time. I actually enjoyed myself! Your unhurried approach to things is rubbing off! Ha! It didn't take nearly as long as I thought, and by not hurrying so much, I was able to keep my stitches even... and they are invisible! So there you go! Thanks for your help in making my friend's Christmas present! Take care... :)

Hi Kate. Congrats. The quilt is done & it looks great. You are more patient than I with your hand finished binding. So glad you went with white sashing too. On a serious note - I'm so glad you documented the process of creation and hope you have started a global awareness amongst your non-quilting subscribers, who will also spread the word with some knowledge to the uninitiated. I feel there is a lack of awareness regarding the time and materials involved, which means people are unwilling to pay a fair price for the final product. It is, after all, a bespoke item. On a happier note - we love Norma's photo bombing butt :) Guaranteed to happen. Take care Kate, Regards from Oz. xx

This is a very interesting comment - because this question of pricing work has frustrated makers the world over. when I worked at a salaried job, no-one questioned that I should earn the amount I did - but now that I 'work for myself' there is a feeling that I should practically give the work away. Now - I do give work away to those I love when it is made to be a gift - but if it is my livelihood - and it is - then I made myself a promise that I would not work for less than the minimum wage. This quilt then - you all saw how long it took, the machine quilting had a cost, the materials, design and time, all too have a cost. - and I have placed a reserve of £400 which is nowhere near the £8 an hour minimum wage, plus all the other costs. It is a big problem and I don't know how we resolve it. I have had a few exhibitions in the past and sold a few quilts - but if I price them fairly almost no-one will buy them. So I end up practically giving them away - or hanging on to them for when i need an extra special gift. Its a problem and is why I almost never make quilts these days! Thank you for raising that point .... all the way from Australia xxxxx Norma and I wish you well xxxxx
@SC-hj3hr
@SC-hj3hr 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kate, there are several dedicated quilting sites that ponder this exact problem of pricing quilting for sale. And makers who discount there work devalue the whole industry, which then gives the public perception that that is all the work is worth. If a carpenter can turn a lump of wood into a bowl to sell for his asking price and a baker can turn a cup of flour into an artisan loaf of bread and get his asking price, why can't quilters turn fabric into a bespoke quilt and get their asking price? That's why I though your Last Homely House site, with it's wider audience, would come to understand what is involved in the making of a quilt (including, the hidden costs of electricity, thread, batting, backing, longarm or hand quilting). Your upcoming blue/green project could shed more light also to the uninitiated. Lets see where this goes! Regards from Oz.@@thelasthomelyhouse

Hi Kate I've really enjoyed the final part of the quilt making journey it was so nice watching it from the beginning to the end. ❤ I really need that Scrappy Quilt in my life,😃 I'm working on my Husband without him knowing to try and convince him that he needs it too! I keep sending him subliminal messages by text and everytime we talk I add in the odd word like scrappy, pink, red, quilt, bed during our conversation. So hopefully I'll be able to place a bid on the quilt by the end of the week unless he has me sectioned into a Psychiatric Hospital, he's starting to look at me like I'm going a little crazy!🤪🤪 GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE WHO'S ENTERED THE GIVEAWAY!🍀🤞

Kate, it turned out absolutely brilliant. I wish I had someone near me (like you) that could teach me how to Quilt, Can foods & do pottery. 🥺. I’m the ONLY one in my immediate family that crochets and can do some 🧶knitting...embroidery, crewel etc. Haven’t sewn anything since I was in sewing class High school & that was 32 yrs ago when I was in 10th grade 🧵 . Too long. Norma just wanted a cuddle. My cats do the very same. They wait until I’m folding laundry 🧺 & then want my attention.

Looking great Kate! Of course Norma had to supervise. Have quilt=cat. I had forgotten about the scrappy binding! It makes the quilt. I love to do binding! Thank you for the visual tip for leaving an extra bit of backing and batting for sewing on the binding. I will finally have clean corner

Oooooh, I wish you had shown us how you had trimmed the edges, as it appears you don't trim your quilt top flush with the edge, but rather about 1/4" away from the edge such that the backing and batting shows that much past the edges of the quilt top. Why is that? It looks quite wider than most bindings, to my eye -- I like it! Maybe you could post a video of how you trim/bind in the future? Lovely quilt, I really like the pattern chosen by your longarm quilter! ~Diana from Toronto

I can imagine the cozy feel and joy. I am working on the first quilt I'm keeping for myself. It is made of Kaffe Fassett Reds and Greens using the split rail fence pattern. I am thinking of naming it Homage to KF and Watermelon. Very Vibrant. Blessings dear Kate and I know you enjoy your quilt.

she's a sweetie isn't she. I have some special food for her - she's 18 and very thin - trying to make sure the young cats don't get it has added some extra fun to the dy! xxx

You are inspiring me to make a quilt along these lines. Yours is fabulous. I’m interested that you call your binding narrow, I cut mine at 2 1/2” and fold it over. I think you have more on the back than I do.

ok - I have made binding narrower than that - but this next quilt I'm about to start may have a border - I've not decided - but I saw one recently that looked great! I love that planning stages! xxx

Oh my some of my favorite colors, as you can see from my name & my channel thumbnail pic of a doily I crocheted. This quilt is gorgeous & reminds me of all the beautiful scrap quilts my grandma made. I think this is what may have started my love for all fabrics when I was a very tiny girl. Thanks so much for sharing this with us.
