TIPS from seamstress, since you asked! 1. Read the instructions all the way through before you start 2. Remember sewing a coat is just a series of small steps like anything else, take it one step at a time and you will do fabulous!☺

Wise words! I designed a jacket at college, which my tutor chose to be part of my collection. It ended up having 72 individual parts! I must have wanted my head reading, but I did make it, and it was certainly worth all the effort.

I love all this making without patterns. Wouldnt have called myself a sewer 50yrs ago when i made first non pattern garment for my daughter straight after buying my only sewing machine (still use it now - guarantee was for 25yrs!) Made 2 or 3 the same gor her but my next piece was a ballgown. Hubby was working in the British Embassy in New Zealand while we were posted there with Royal Navy! Lots of dos to go to! My grandmother was a seamstress at The Royal Courts in London & she made from scratch (easily) little pillbox hats for my 3 bridesmaids who didnt want flowers in their hair as they were almost 20. My other daughter now sometimes works off-pattern so to speak. I guess she picked up from me the same as i picked up from my Mum. X

TIP: For padded clothing, it’s safer to quilt the “sandwich” before cutting out pattern pieces (as quilting shrinks the fabric). Then pattern pieces from ready-quilted fabric, will be the correct size. Good luck with those gorgeous fabrics!!

14:49 sounds like your needle needs "sharpening". When you stick it in, I hear a little popping sound. A really sharp needle glides through the fabric. They say change your sewing machine needle often. The same goes with hand sewing needles. Fun fact: during the world wars, ladies working in the war effort were only issued one needle for their machines as metal was often rationed. So every night after a day of sewing, they'd sharpen their needles... First, by stropping them on leather (I use an old belt). Often the point is just folded over stropping straightens it. If the point has broken off, then sharpening (removing material to form a point) is necessary. I use a fine fingernail file. I know sharpening a needle in these days seems frivolous, but finding the right needle, the right length with the right eye takes time. When a few swipes on a piece of leather or fingernail file will get you back to smooth stitching in no time, why not try it?! 💖🌞🌵😷

Ooooh, I’m so exited Kate! I started out as a seamstress and it’s a skill you never lose. My one tip would be to always cut the sleeves a bit longer than is stated - I find they tend to be too short (but it could be me with long arms!!!!!)🤣😂🤣 Also, start thinking about pockets from the very start - we all know how important they are! Final thought - since this is going to be solid on the outside, you can take some of that gorgeous inside fabric and add it do odd places on the outside of your jacket. I just made a jacket and I put a square of bright colours on the top back, and then took two strips (about 2" wide) and put them on the end of the sleeves - running up the sleeve - only about 4" (10cm) or so but adds a pop of colour in an unexpected place on your wrist! Can't wait to see this come to life - I'll have to check out their fabric! If you have any suggestions for great places for unusual fabric, I'd love it if you could share them!!! Thank you as always - now I'm excited to sew another jacket (always need them in Northumberland, don't we? Especially this "summer".... haha). Love to all, including cat Rita.xxx

I think these are going to be lovely. My tip would be to trace your pattern onto swiss tracing paper in your size. Swiss tracing paper is great because it behaves a bit like fabric; so you can tack it together, fit it and make adjustments, then cut your fabric from that. That preserves your printed paper version so you dont need to reprint if want to make it in another size. You will also know how the pieces go together before you sew. Thank you for your videos, they are really inspiring and its so nice to spend time with you in this way. Penny.

Hello Kate, I've made the Nova coat and jacket 4 times now and it looks complicated but it's not and all makes sense as you put it together. Just enjoy the process if you can, you always seem to 😍 It's just nerve wracking when you make a new design. It's a very roomy design but lovely and snuggly to wear. I use a cross body bag to keep mine closed 😊 If you opened your file in Adobe Acrobat, you could go to the layers tab, select the size you require, or sizes if you're grading between sizes. This makes it so much easier when cutting out. Another bonus of the PDF pattern x

Hello, Kate! What a coincidence! I have just returned from a quilting retreat in Pennsylvania, where I purchased fabric-from a local quilt shop-for a Swing Coat. I’m going to quilt with a fusible fleece and make it reversible as well. As another subscriber suggested, It is important to take the time to make a muslin version. You really just need to mock up the basic shell in order to determine the appropriate size and length of the body and sleeves. I used to make my own blazers when I was in high school in the late 60s/early 70s. That was a long time ago, but I’m comfortable with the construction process. I’m looking forward to sharing the result when my friends and I get together for next year’s retreat. I am really looking forward to following your journey with your 2 coats. The fabrics are gorgeous and far more colourful than mine. I’ll be busy this summer with a fundraiser quilt for my local hospice and camping plans, so I won’t be able to start this project until after our Thanksgiving in October. As always, Thank you and stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦

OK, a tip that can be frustrating - make at least the outside of the adult coat first in muslin or scrap fabric, then you can check/adjust the sizing and adapt the pattern pieces to what worked in the muslin. Don't forget to allow for ease (extra inches) since you'll be wearing it over other garments, even maybe sweaters. Good luck!

Hi, Kate. Not sure where you are in your project now, but I have made a lot of clothing (4 daughters needing dresses and such). You can make a practice coat from old sheets and such, just to become familiar with the pattern before cutting the good fabric. This also lets you know if you need to alter any of the pieces for a better fit for you. You can also copy the pattern onto tissue paper so that the original can be kept intact in case you need to alter something. Good luck. I know you can do this.😊
