Johnny, as an owner of a UK-delivered 1981 E12 M535i in the exact exterior colour scheme, this was such a joy to watch! It was like watching a thriller as you and Tony were tinkering and trying to solve the mysterious tapping sound, and then when she finally roared into life it was just incredible. I was hanging on just waiting for that M90 to fire up! Along with everyone else in the comments below, i thoroughly look forward to the follow up video! Peter must be chuffed. This took me back to my childhood. My mother was nurse at a clinic next to the BMW plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria in the late 70s and early 80s. Sometime, during school holidays, I would go to work with her. My highlight was the factory visits she used to do to treat her out patients, including at BMW. You can imagine the excitement of a 10 year boy inside the factory where they made the ultimate driving machine (even if I had to stay in the car).

I was in the army in the mid 80s in S.A. based in Kroonstadt. We would hitch-hike back home to Cape Town when we had leave. Even sometimes just for the weekend, even though it was about 1215 km each way. One day on a Friday evening, a guy traveling from Johannesburg to Cape Town picked us up in a car just like this one. He picked us up because he was tired and needed someone to share the driving. His only stipulation to us was that we share the driving and go fast as he told us to drive to be in Cape Town for breakfast. The trip usually took around 12 hours at an average of 110 km/h with a couple of stops for fuel in those days. That trip took us around 8 hours going at about 160 km/h on average on empty roads in the middle of the night through the desert. What a thrill. Not sure we could have done it in any other car at the time.

From the mid 70’s till probably the 90’s🤔 American power and sports cars were lacking due to gas prices and emissions standards. Since we always thought bigger was better, most didn’t understand how to use smaller to its limits. In that time many of us fell in love with cars from all over the world. Restored ? change all fluids in it (oil, fuel, water/cooling, brakes liquid +all filters, change the gearbox oil), ball-bearings +joints, check brakes pads + rotors, fresh tires on both sets of rims, check exhaust to not be rotten, wash-it, vacuum & clean inside-out and simply drive it just like that, patina on it is perfection, really.. if this time capsule would be mine no need for fresh paint to worry about paint scratches, chips & dents, this would be it..

Just hearing (and seeing) it's a ZA car gave me goosebumps. If possible, you should do a special on ZA homologation Beemers, the 333i, the 325iS (with Alpina bits to make it a 2.7 screamer and M-technic body kit), 745i (with, I think, either the M1 6 cylinder or a 3.5ltr turbo). Back in the 80s and 90s South African engineers were very creative in keeping us motorsport addicts entertained. Those cars were legends here in ZA, driven by legendary drivers, Tony Viana, Deon Joubett and co. I assume that some of those cars were imported to the UK. Coincidentally I regularly see 2 E12s in my neighbourhood, and though I'm a Mercedes driver, I still stare, they've always had a certain appeal.

It's ALWAYS a bit of a wonder when a car which has lain dormant for (in this case) several decades is brought back to life. Well done on another one!

Great episode, something about this one really represents how cars used to be appreciated a lot more in the past, for many they were big parts of our lives and families in an emotional way, they had their good days and their bad days the same way people do and you got from them what you put in. Modern cars are more like tools than anything else, soulless and disposable. Technology has moved on and they are better than ever at what they are designed for but somehow they have lost their 'magic' and I can't imagine we will ever get that back.

Wow guys!!!! what a treat. As a young South African I remember watching the incredible racing at Kyalami race track. The Beamers were always super awesome to watch from up on the grandstands at Wesbank Corner!!!! The M535's were incredible!!! Many years ago whilst driving in my seriously modified VW Jetta CSI I was driving along Rhodes drive in Constantia (Cape Town - South Africa) on the way to Constantia neck when a twin light grille vehicle with full brights on came up behind me! I thought it was a GTI! I tried to pul away from him as I had some serious power....well I could not drop this guy and he stuck to me like glue! As I got to the top of the hill I gave it full gas down the other side.....before I knew it this BMW M535i flew past me like he was doing 120km/h on a parking lot! WOW those beamers has some SERIOUS torque. Look after that Beamer guys, I can't wait to see it on the road and in its full splendour again. Awesome Video, thank you for an incredible trip to relive the memories from yesteryear!!

Really enjoyed this video, but the question that was never answered (I don’t think) was why did he put the car away for so long? He clearly cherishes the car so why not drive it for so long?

WOW!! As an ex rsa lad this made tear up. I had e12"s and e28"s ( never a m5 535 ). Was a fireman in Gauteng and had to pull out a guy from the predecessor to this - the m 530. The guy smashed unto a tree on the old Johannesburg road. Johnny, this show is the best!

When trying to jump start these cars, stop putting both jump leads/booster pack leads on the battery of the dead car. It's incorrect. Put the positive lead on the battery and the negative to a good engine ground AWAY from the battery and see the difference it makes. I am a former AA roadside assistance tech.

So lovely to see the mahoosive smile on the owners face once they got it running. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a couple of tears behind his glasses and he maybe felt quite choked up to get his much-loved beautiful Beemer running again.

That battery jumper you brought worked just fine there! It's not expected to last as a 650cca battery, it's just a little booster pack! Oh my word what a delicious find here my friend! That car is absolutely 1of7 and God knows how many are in that condition! I'm 20 minutes in, sure hope to hear her roar to life again! Wonderful work

Excellent find Jonny.... I remember these, an uncle had this and a M325is Shadowline, another South African special. You absolutely had to hear those cars with their free flow exhaust systems - goose bumps. He used to run both of these at a local drag strip in Gauteng (then Transvaal) called Tarlton. Both of them beat all takers - Opel Firenza's, Ford Cortinas and Perana's, Opel BOSS, Golf GTI/CTI's (another South African special if memory serves, and equally iconic, at least to me as I owned a candy apple red one with a set of BBS rims). At least until the Ford Sierra XR8, Opel Super BOSS (another SA Special) and Mitsubishi Tredia Turbo came on the scene. I get all misty eyed thinking about those heady days :D :D. On a side note, Perana Louvers were not made and owned by Basil Green, who was the man behind the Perana Ford - But for a South African car nut from the 70's, 80's and 90's, these louvers are nostalgic too. Many a classic car had these as the first addition, with a set of side window "bubbles" to complete the look :). They are made to this day, and as far as I know they still have their molds for these somewhere in their shop in Nigel, South Africa.
