Barn Find Rare 80s BMW M Sport survivor car untouched for 30 years - will it run? Welcome to another barnfind episode of The Late Brake Show where Jonny Smith unearths an exceptionally rare 1-of-7 BMW E12/8 M535I Lightweight homologation saloon, made only for the South African market. Found in the most unlikely of places in Chorley, Lancashire, UK, Jonny, together with owner Peter Harris and E12 BMW guru Tony Chamberlain (aka www.tonybmw.co.uk) digs out the survivor M car and tries to get the time capsule '80s super saloon running.

Great episode, as a South African car fan these special BMWs are held high, we had a 333i aswell I believe built in SA. The Perana name also hugely respected. I myself lived in Secunda, the small town mentioned by the owner. Those yellow Transvaal number plates are so nostalgic.

Been an avid watcher of this show since the start and eagerly await each episode. This car has literally been under my nose for 30 plus years. I would have walked past that garage on the way to school, bought my first house in 2001 1/4 mile away and now live less than 3 miles away from the location. The whole time it’s been there and never had an inkling. I am a serial BMW owner myself since 97 and currently drive a 2020 530. Love this episode with my very bones ❤️

It was like watching a thriller as you and Tony were tinkering and trying to solve the mysterious tapping sound, and then when she finally roared into life it was just incredible. From the mid 70’s till probably the 90’s🤔 American power and sports cars were lacking due to gas prices and emissions standards. Since we always thought bigger was better, most didn’t understand how to use smaller to its limits. In that time many of us fell in love with cars from all over the world. This took me back to my childhood. My mother was nurse at a clinic next to the BMW plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria in the late 70s and early 80s. Sometime, during school holidays, I would go to work with her. My highlight was the factory visits she used to do to treat her out patients, including at BMW. You can imagine the excitement of a 10 year boy inside the factory where they made the ultimate driving machine (even if I had to stay in the car).

passion, enthusiasm, heritage, exclusivity and the unfathomable joy ... so much we got to see in this episode. Truly an epic barn-find for me to remember all my life. Thanks Jonny for bringing this to us 👍. Hoping to see Part-2 when this beauty Beemer is fully restored and running on road ❤️

Restored ? change all fluids in it (oil, fuel, water/cooling, brakes liquid +all filters, change the gearbox oil), ball-bearings +joints, check brakes pads + rotors, fresh tires on both sets of rims, check exhaust to not be rotten, wash-it, vacuum & clean inside-out and simply drive it just like that, patina on it is perfection, really.. if this time capsule would be mine no need for fresh paint to worry about paint scratches, chips & dents, this would be it..

wow wow wow, this is truly a diamond in the rough. So great he kept it. That first car, well that first special car you wanted, the one that every single drive was a joy, few are wise enough or can afford to keep it. Everyone else just misses it and looks back longingly and with regret :) .

How could you leave a car as beautiful as that in a garage for three decades? Not that I’m comparing too much as we get the chance to see it! Great episode all round 👍

Every hat I own is lifted for the way in which Peter has looked after and clearly lived this car. Even in this short video I can totally see and hear why he loves it so much. Kudos to Tony BMW for those engine whisperer skills and of course to you Jonny - as always a total pleasure to watch. Your desire to find, uncover and share these finds is appreciated.

Thank you for sharing your excitement with us all. Longest I've left a BMW was our M20 for 3 years though I probably turned it over every year. No engine likes being idle I hope this one get to run and run. I look forward to seeing it at Sommerfest.

There is so much about this car I love, from the hand-painted stripes, to the twin aerials and the period AA South African national identifier, it is a true time capsule, and nice to see something so rare that is is well preserved, as opposed to being restored

It's ALWAYS a bit of a wonder when a car which has lain dormant for (in this case) several decades is brought back to life. Well done on another one!

Great episode, something about this one really represents how cars used to be appreciated a lot more in the past, for many they were big parts of our lives and families in an emotional way, they had their good days and their bad days the same way people do and you got from them what you put in. Modern cars are more like tools than anything else, soulless and disposable. Technology has moved on and they are better than ever at what they are designed for but somehow they have lost their 'magic' and I can't imagine we will ever get that back.

I remember watching these cars at Kayalami. They were replaced by 740 also a homologation only found in SA. But they were racing against Sierra XR8 and other specials. Very nice car this, thanks for sharing.

I don't think there has been a better looking bmw than that generation of 5 series, I love these barn finds, it doesn't matter to me whether it's something incredibly rare or something that was once very common, the stories and the process of digging them out and getting them running is the best part.

Wow guys!!!! what a treat. As a young South African I remember watching the incredible racing at Kyalami race track. The Beamers were always super awesome to watch from up on the grandstands at Wesbank Corner!!!! The M535's were incredible!!! Many years ago whilst driving in my seriously modified VW Jetta CSI I was driving along Rhodes drive in Constantia (Cape Town - South Africa) on the way to Constantia neck when a twin light grille vehicle with full brights on came up behind me! I thought it was a GTI! I tried to pul away from him as I had some serious power....well I could not drop this guy and he stuck to me like glue! As I got to the top of the hill I gave it full gas down the other side.....before I knew it this BMW M535i flew past me like he was doing 120km/h on a parking lot! WOW those beamers has some SERIOUS torque. Look after that Beamer guys, I can't wait to see it on the road and in its full splendour again. Awesome Video, thank you for an incredible trip to relive the memories from yesteryear!!

Just hearing (and seeing) it's a ZA car gave me goosebumps. If possible, you should do a special on ZA homologation Beemers, the 333i, the 325iS (with Alpina bits to make it a 2.7 screamer and M-technic body kit), 745i (with, I think, either the M1 6 cylinder or a 3.5ltr turbo). Back in the 80s and 90s South African engineers were very creative in keeping us motorsport addicts entertained. Those cars were legends here in ZA, driven by legendary drivers, Tony Viana, Deon Joubett and co. I assume that some of those cars were imported to the UK. Coincidentally I regularly see 2 E12s in my neighbourhood, and though I'm a Mercedes driver, I still stare, they've always had a certain appeal.
