Why I bought (and imported) a classic 1968 Dodge Charger manual

The classic Dodge is one of Jonny's project cars that always gets asked about, so here is a 'story so far' and detailed walk around of the 1968 Charger 4-speed. The car was bought on Ebay in 2008 and arrived from San Diego in July 2008, just in time to be dragged on a trailer to his wedding. A week later he went on honeymoon to California and ended up touring San Francisco, where this particular 1 of 259 spec car was originally supplied. One of 259 meaning it is the smallest of the big block engined cars (High output 4-barrel carb 383 cubic inch) with a 4-speed manual gearbox, no centre console, no power brakes or steering.
The rawness of the spec and patination of what is a combination of original F6 bright green paint covered (badly) in bronze/brown metallic is what drew him to buy this particular car. Purchased when America went into recession, the car came over as a numbers matching (meaning original engine, gearbox and axle still intact) non runner and spent 9 months being sympathetically restored by Tim at Roadhouse Motor Co - roadhousemotor... - in a way so as to retain its weathered charm. The usual areas had rotted for these monocoque Mopars, like the boot floors, rear corners, lower quarters, rear valance, rear window and parcel shelf area.
Non-original mechanical features on the Charger include an aluminium radiator, electronic ignition, an Edelbrock 4-barrel carb, inlet manifold and the custom Wortec - www.wortec.co.uk/ - active exhaust system. The exhaust is hand built in the UK from 316 stainless steel and features Wortec's own design remote valve divert silencers. These can be made for any car, including new stuff, and are NOT to be confused with the off-shelf electric cut-outs. The valve in the exhaust is made by from 6061t aluminium (hard anodised) and 316 stainless parts, and it diverts the exhaust gas flow down two pathways. The silencer is a straight through design and has no chambers to reduce sound it is designed to divert sound waves not gas flow.
The suspension has been mildly upgraded to Hemi leaf springs at the rear and new torsion bars at the front. The shocks are KYB and the wheels are widened Wheel Vintiques cop car steels.
For its 50th birthday in 2018 (when this was filmed) Jonny gifted the Charger with a gold plated 'tooth' bumper overrider, to go with the characterful damaged front grille.
The Dodge is strictly a weekend and summer car, meaning it is the yang to his EV yin. Be sure to subscribe for future episodes including Jonny's ratty 1968 Charger muscle car.

But after 10 years, still not know anything about the design/purpose of the product. It cruises terribly. It doesn’t do long distance either. It exits corners fast and enters corners fast. You’re supposed to adjust those settings.

@@dreyn7780 Not true at all Dreyn - I bought this car to keep it driving and feeling the way it would have driven and felt in 1968. If I wanted to hugely update it I would have built a resto-mod. This is a slice in time of muscle car history, not a modernised re-make.

I have to thank Tim at Roadhouse Motor Co for his bodywork and paint blending skills. He specialises in patinated car sourcing and sympathetic repairs.
@dreyn7780

@@TheLateBrakeShow I’ve never said you need to up date it or resto mod it. You need to learn what job the engineering team tuned the car to do. Then you need to drive the car to what the components are built to do. The makers only allowed you to adjust engine power and wheel alignment, the rest of the stuff you’re not allowed to change. You’re not allowed to tune cruising performance. There’s nowhere to adjust that on the car. The throttle doesn’t adjust cruising speed. You are competing with v10 and v12 motors don’t forget. There’s a simple reason why Ford wanted to buy Ferrari. Ford wanted to add a few more explosions to their motors but their motor performance was in the same style as Ferrari motors.

Epic car, saw it at EBC brakes do. Fell in love right then. Beauty with a touch of rough diamond / maniac. I had a 71 charger in the 90's with non servo drums and a built 383. Went to see Dave Eady at Eadys American autos in Burton Latimer (sadly now a housing estate. The yank scrapyard / car sales / parts place closed down and gone. R. I. P. Rod Eady). Dave gave my car the once over, looked at me and said "it's got adrenaline brakes then?"... He wasn't wrong. I still remember the day a nissan micra pulled out right on front of me and I thought I was going to drive straight through it. Maybe a brake upgrade would be a good investment for yours? (and a high ratio steering box. That was a game changer. Cost me about £50 more than a standard recon one and made it steer more like a normal car.)

@@TheLateBrakeShow my charger was originally a 318 but had a 383 engine built by Smax Smith already in it when I aquired it. 727 torqueflite gearbox with reverse pattern manual valve body, high stall torque convertor, etc. Best I saw out of it was high elevens. And 7 mpg. I straight swapped my 3 litre corsair on lotus wheels for it after the charger guy chased me down at billing aquadrome show. I sort of miss every car I've sold on over the years But sometimes a new project is hard to pass by. I do still have a barn full of cars I've already built and unstarted projects I can't bear to part with though. The lockdown project is now on the road 12 months after purchase. I've had lots of time on my hands and sorted out a million and one jobs. 1960 zodiac two doored with capri roof, built really well in the very early 90's, then bodged badly by some of its subsequent owners. by the time I got it it had a heat siezed 302 with a head gasket fitted backwards and a ton of dangerous bodges. I've built it a 347 stroker with ally heads, home made headers, Jack daniels screenwash bottle, traditional filigris signpainting in the engine bay by my mate Dave underwood, and a brass antique urn I bought from ebay made into a header tank. The stench that came out of that thing when I soldered the pipe stubs and rad cap neck made me feel sick. I suspect it may have had someone's nan in it before I bought it.... If your passing by Broughton near Kettering give me a shout if you fancy checking out some wierd creations. 4x4 105e turbo technics, saab b204 powered rwd mondeo eurocar, 480 turbo engined volvo 340, etc.

Lovely to see the ol' girl on the roads ( I saw you entering the Pod @ Dragstalgia last year ) My dad ran the Mopar Muscle Club back in the early 80's here in the UK , I was chauf... shofur... oh ff.... driven to school in a black 440R/T with a 727 torqueflite . He also had 2 different RHD '68 Baracudas (318/727) ( South African imports to Warwick Wright UK) And a Satellite . You'll never guess what year !! Just so you know Johnny , 1969 was the first year for 440 +6 option . Nuffin' wrong with a 383 (or a 273 , 318 ....340...) Mopars ! LOVE IT !

Hi Spencer, are you related to Roger? I recognise the surname. What it must have felt like to go to school in a black RT 440. Awesome. I have fancied a RHD Barracuda after seeing the Goodwood Revival circuit cars, and wondering if one could make a worthy period circuit racer. How many exist now? Thank you for the message.

I have a 4 speed manual in an 86 F150 and it's quite nice to not have to think about what gear to be in because you get up to speed and it's like oh......well I guess we're done here.

Hello UK, from Wisconsin. Great car, great video. I just came in from driving my 69 440 4 speed Charger. I met the real Bullitt car about 8 years ago in Arizona. Heading to Carlisle next month...

Hi Jeff, you have a fine car sir. The 440 4 speed is probably the best animal. How long have you had it?

Because, after a lot of love and money put in, it's a beautiful car. Liking the sound already. That front is so nice.

Love this. Closest I have got so far was my '66 Plymouth Belvedere B Body with transplanted 440, it was in Richard Petty Blue from new which was pretty cool! She wouldn't fit on the ramps where I normally get cars MOT'd, had to go to a commercial vehicle place around the corner instead :)
