I was smiling and sometimes crying watching this one. My late grandfather had a mk1 camper in the Ise Of Man. When we used to visit in the summer we’d argue about who could sleep in in it. It was only in the driveway lol. But as a kid that was still an adventure. Absolutely loved this one Jonny, thank you

Nice little van, and yes escorts always looked well in that yellow. Last time I looked and taking nothing away from a 2 litre cossie, Simon Robbins held the record in a small Fiat camper. The record could have been broken since, but it acheved in the region of 145 + mph. Newer of course and even had a porta potti too. I dont know if he still has it, but was building Campervans up to about two years ago. You can see his and his wifes latest project on the Ship Happens channel. P.S. I dont personally know the chap, only that I follow the channel. He was a mechanic before his current enterprise.

I had one of these back in the early 90's, totally stock 1300, had no drivers floor & rotted out sills, but got it back on the road in a month! Mine was a 1971 with a fold out rear tent (you had to leave the rear doors open to deploy the tent & get the bed down) was great fun & toured the west country & new forest with it. I planned to replace the tired 1300 with a 2.0 pinto, but ended up swapping it for a 2.8 injection Capri, wish I still had it, as Mk1 escort prices are truly mad now!

Oh man, Johnny, thanks for featuring Darryl and his fantastic Escort - it IS the absolute bomb! If you’re going out into the countryside to enjoy nature you’re going to be on brilliant roads, but typical campers are not driving machines. With this beauty (YAY yellow!) you get your cake and eat it too! My personal solution to the same problem is my ‘‘91 Volvo 240 wagon with a warmed up VW TDI engine and good suspension mods. All the benefits of the classic Swedish Brick with room to sleep, but much faster and WAY better mpg!

What a riot Jonny ! Back in the '70's l had a mini pickup with a1300 engine and gearbox from a Austin 1300 so with the gearbox ratio set up for 12"" wheels it went like stink ! So we drove from Newton Abbot to pick up an up right piano from Exeter. So Jo's pregnant with Emma and has our 4 year old in her lap (couldn't do that today!) We tied the piano in the back and drove back to Newton . We obviously had to go up Telegraph and so l gunned the mini. We were easily doing 80 + and easily passed a Triumph Stag . It was bad enough when the driver saw the front of the mini but wnen he saw the piano in the back his jaw literally dropped into his lap ! It easily ex eeded 100 mph ! The poor little engine only lasted 6 months but what a hoot ! Thanks Jonny

I am sure you don't here this very often but... May I please touch your... old van? Very, very cool. Many years ago I was on my way to North Wales from the West Midlands. Though I cannot remember why I ended up looking at it, the driver of an Escort van of this vintage, whose kids were sitting in the back, lifted his bonnet to show me the engine. He had rebuilt the engine, perhaps reconfigured is a better word, and he'd moved the radiator and a few other significant engine components, which he took pride in telling me while telling me he was a professional mechanic. This takes me back about 30 or 35 years. Thanks, both.
