Lithium Iron Phosphate battery chemistry has many upsides: cheaper materials, no cobalt, long expected battery life, and lower chance of fires. Really the only reason it hasnt caught on as THE battery chemistry is because it has lower energy density than high nickel chemistries, so that the obsession/excuse of range anxiety is preventing many of the manufacturers from switching. The Chinese (BYD in particular) are also the major suppliers of LFP cells, so certain protectionist trade policies are keeping these superior cells out of certain markets. Which is ironic because the same people who dont want Chinese cars are the same people who constantly bring up colbalt mining and child exploitation (of course some of those same people in the US also just blocked legislation requiring companies to confirm the age of younger employees... sooo child exploitation isnt above their morals, just a convenient excuse).

This BYD Atto 3 is also very popular in Thailand. However the cost of parts can be very expensive. One car ran over the curb and scrapped the battery tray. The cost of the tray and battery replacement parts (before labour and other cost) was ~900,000 THB (~39,130 Aus Dollar). Another car was involved in a side collision and the quoted price for the side panels were ~130,000 THB (~5,625 Aus Dollar) before labor and other additional cost. I have owned one in Australia since the middle of September, and it represents exceptional value for money. At the time of purchase, it was $50,700 Aussie dollars for the extended range Atto 3 in blue. We have 2 models here standard with the 50kw battery and extended range with the 60kw battery all trim specifications between the 2 are identical, all have the sunroof/ Moonroof as standard and we have the 12.8 inch infotainment screen and electric tailgate as standard too. Home charging speed is limited to 7.2 kw. We don't have the 11kw option. With the Atto 3 being a ground up built Ev and with all these standard features, some other Ev brands charge you for as an option, the Atto 3 represents exceptional value for money. To me, the Atto 3, with its vehicle to load capability as standard at an affordable and competitive price even when compared to the MG ZS EV, which currently in Australia is only available with the smaller battery and built on an Ice platform is starting to look very dated. I can see both Tesla and BYD being the companies dominating global Ev brands and other brands getting left behind because they are too slow to make the transition into pure Ev vehicles, plus they will have difficulty with supplying the global market and competing with Chinese EV companies when it comes to manufacturing costs per Ev built. When you make your own Ev batteries and other components like BYD does, you are already ahead of the curve. Yes, BYD are an unknown brand outside of China, but they have been building pure Ev vehicles since 2010 in China, and conventional ice vehicles since 2005. Warren Buffett from the USA, a well known and respected investor/business man bought millions of dollars worth of shares in BYD in 2008 as he could see the potential of BYD.

A consideration for a new market entrant, but by the same token, how new and how big are they? The answer is very simple: the largest EV manufacturer in the world, operating in 60+ countries. If you're afraid of them disappearing then you won't be buying a Tesla either because Tesla is in a much more precarious global position than BYD is. In fact, there's a decent chance Tesla will fail within the next 10 years as other manufacturers eat their market share. BYD is actually a distant second to CATL in term of lithium battery producer, but they are still a massive battery maker, supplying cells to other companies from Tesla to Toyota. However BYD is now the largest plug in carmaker in the world, selling nearly 2 million units in 2022, and will possibly overtake Tesla as the number 1 pure BEV maker by volume either this year or next year. Edit: Also BYD has sold more than 3.5 million cars in their history, since they've been making (mostly crappy) cars for almost 20 years now. I believe the 3.5 million are just the cumulative plugin (BEV and PHEV) cars they've sold, of which 1.8 million just in 2022 alone, so they are growing fast indeed, and their current offerings are night and day different from the crappy cars they started with 20 years ago.

The white dash is supposed to represent muscle fibre. I've owned one for 3 months. It took me some time to warm to the vehicle. The quick rundown: The suspension is OK, a bit floaty over 80km/h but the car handles really well around the city with one caveat. In the wet the Atlas Batman tyres we got in Australia aren't up to the job. Not dangerous but will slip easily on take off - basically they require common sense. The regen is not great on the accelerator as it uses blended braking - so more aimed at traditional ICE drivers - definitely no one pedal driving. You can feel the regen on the brake pedal and when the friction brake cuts in. The navigation is exceptional. Really good. It now supports Apple Carplay but the built in navigation makes it almost unnecessary. The sound system is ... very average. It has a low speed warning indicator which you can't disable in software. I definitely didn't disconnect it the first week I had the car. The air con can be a bit anaemic for Australian conditions but it eventually gets to the right temperature. It has excellent cameras all around and a great virtual overhead view which is usually reserved for high end models (something my Tesla lacks). Overall I really like driving the car now - it smooth, quiet and reasonably efficient - about 400kms city/extra urban). I also own a Model 3 RWD which is better in nearly every way which is why it took me a while to warm to the BYD. I much prefer the one pedal driving and things like driver profiles that you get with the Tesla. Plus the Tesla app. Currently in Australia there is no app for the Atto 3. If I'm going on a trip I still take the Tesla (much faster charging, supercharger network, autopilot and more efficient). I will do a longer drive in the Atto 3 to see how it fares. Couple of Atto 3 quirks and observations. It has two park buttons near the gear shift. I'm not sure why? It has an NFC reader on the driver's mirror that allows you to use a key card to open the car. But they only give you one key card with the car and haven't enabled mobile phone NFC access. Seems like a waste. It has an unnecessary button to start the car. It has pretty good voice controls.

From your very thourough comment i read that the Atto III is not better than Tesla besides the 360 degree virtual view. Why is it more expensive in our country than the Model Y Standard Range? Not the 3. The Y!

@@wolfgangpreier9160 Makes no sense to me - the RWD Y is nearly $20K more expensive here. I'm not sure why the Atto 3 is so expensive in Europe and the UK. I would buy the Y every day of the week over the Atto 3. They aren't even in the same class of vehicle. The Atto 3 is a compact SUV or a slightly higher hatchback. The Model Y is much bigger and more practical for a lot of people.

@@mondotv4216 BYD has to follow the UN/ECE regulations for European car sales. They can not sell those vehicles they are giving the chinese and to Oz. Starting in 2024 all of those cars that have been freshly homologated for the European market must have the full range of ADAS and must follow certain very harsh tests regarding dust emission and crash tests. Yes, even EVs must follow dust emission standards. Who would have thought of that? Even the Chinese built VWs would not get a permit on European roads. Which, of course, makes everything much more expensive. Tesla is the only manufacturer who did not have to raise their prices. VW and Skoda cost around 20-22K more than MY. The Koreans are around 15-17K more expensive. Polestar, Volvo and even Stellantis cost more than Tesla. Ford is in the same range as BMW and Mercedes, Nio, Hongqi, XPeng around 80K+. GWM-Ora Cat, Mini, Smart/SAIC cost around 45-55K. Fisker -locally made 100km of here - is around 70K. Only MG tries to stay below 40K - and does not succeed. The MG5 costs around 41K. The Model 3 costs 43K. Do you think the MG5 is the same quality, sustainability, longevity and overall amount of car as a Model 3???

This is getting closer to what I want in a daily, I am only in a car for 10 minutes each way to get to work, and would use it primarily as a grocery getter, with occasional light trailer towing needs. No cost travel? Are you ignoring the purchase price? If you're only doing 10 minutes a day then in pure cost terms an ICE easily beats any EV, even a solar recharged one.

@@DiscoFang I guess your still back in the 90s, sure I have to buy the car but I need to replace my current car as it is pretty much worn out. Having spent thousands on maintaining it and then more thousands refuelling it. The idea with an electric car with the ability to hook up to my home is to capture my excess solar power and use it in the evening. Yes I paid for my solar panels, my electricity bill was over $1000 per quarter they are now less than $200 and most of that is the supply charge. So they paid for themselves in about a year. I'm not sure why people are so keen to keep on paying for power and motion provided by fossil fuels, when you can achieve the same outcome with renewable with much less impact on the environment and your wallet. It pretty much is evolution in energy creation, we have been told for years that we needed to find a solution for diminishing oil supplies, but I guess some people can't move with the times. I am sure there were plenty of people who thought the car wouldn't catch on kept there horses for eternity.

@@ADudesRotary They were your words not mine. Free running costs. The fact remains, a new EV is far more expensive than an equivalent new ICE. That fact says nothing about my preference or situation yet you seem to have extrapolated beyond the point and think now you know me. So far off the mark. So you already have solar? Your initial comment of wanting a car with inbuilt panels to allow zero running costs implied you didn’t. But that’s a whole ‘nother can of snake oil. Expecting a car with inbuilt solar panels to be able to produce any meaningful power is not realistic. The available surface area is one thing but angle of incidence, panel curvatures and and environmental shading are all limiting factors. It’s a gimmick not a reality.
@DiscoFang Жыл бұрын
How many miles are you travelling a day? 10mins of urban and m’way combo would be only about 5 miles each way. 5 days a week of that plus groceries is only only around 3,500miles a year. Yes that doesn’t require much solar energy but that’s also only about 330L of petrol for a reasonably fuel efficient modern car. That’s at least 15 years of petrol for the purchase price difference. I love EVs but be real.

One of the only reviews that has reviewed this car for what it has been designed for. A family SUV that was designed to deliver comfort, safety and economy to a family. Very well done. I’m glad you showed the interior for what it is, not the horror that some have portrayed it to be because it dared to be different. I can see many young families buying this car, as it is very modern, and extremely good quality. As we wanted to go for a BEV, and I have modified our house for solar, to ensure the majority of our charging is free and green, I did a lot of study on new BEV’s. This car came out on top for everything including great value for money. The standard safety, additional items unexpected (like the electric hatch) and tech is outstanding for the money. Not to mention, you also tested it for what it was built for, a comfortable ride. Some seem to test it as a sports car, it’s not a sports car it’s meant to be a comfortable SUV. GREAT WORK INDEED.
@lachieavard8887 Жыл бұрын
I wholeheartedly agree with you. The majority of the reviews I have read for this car are obviously cut-and-paste journalism and as you have noted they seem to have no concept of what the car is actually for! I own an Atto and I just love it. It is smooth, quiet and comfortable, and still has enough poke to take off at the lights and seriously piss off the muscle heads if you can be bothered to. As for running costs, I charge at home partially on solar (you can program the car when to turn charging on and off) and even assuming 100% grid-power it only costs me about $AU 1.20 a day for a 60km commute. The saving in petrol is paying the interest on the loan for me.

Atto is an insanely simple functional programming language. It features a syntax driven entirely by polish notation and no delimiters to speak of (it ignores all non-separating whitespace). What do you get for this simplicity? Well... an insanely simple language with a ~200 line self-hosted interpreter. Despite these design limitations, it's actually possible to write quite pleasing code in Atto. That, combined with the extraordinarily extendable syntax (you can define your own operators, or overload those defined in the core library) make it ideal for solving a whole class of programming problems that are normally awkward to solve in more imperative languages.

I don't mind it for some products I buy but a non-legacy branded car that needs servicing and other support, I'm a bit more bothered about. I find EV's still to be too expensive. In any case I intend to run my current car as long as I can, that seems to me the best thing to do. I wonder how the import price is set? Where does that money go towards? It's not like they build them at a different price. There is a bit of morality/ethics/security involved in buying China-built which I understand is hard to avoid but one can try. There is a reason Huawei products are avoided and I don't like their authoritarian government. I'm not a big fan of the interior. Nice that they have a rear wiper (why are some companies deleting these, seriously ..). I would not consider it. If YOU want it, buy it and be happy. This is a really great, balanced review, and I personally think the Atto 3 should be higher on any option list than the overpriced, underperforming “competition” from the likes of VW. I totally agree a heat pump should be standard for the UK, unfortunately this is something hidden in the grass for many people, and by many manufacturers. Beating on VW again, but this is another VW group area I find questionable (removing heat pumps from specific models, or not including as standard, or even providing an option for one), but then there is a question on whether the heat pump they did design was engineered appropriately (heat pump gate 😅). Lastly, thank you so much for being the first car journalist I have watched to demonstrate a clear understanding of the needs of dog owners from a practicality perspective! ❤ we have one EV and a Peugeot 5008 with a “cave” for storage, and our two golden retrievers, waiting for the right EV to switch to, with the right specification, at the right price.
