This costs only a little more than a Microlino, but does so much more. Renault should have a winner here. The only real negative for me is that AC recharging is only 11 kW, compared to 22 for a Zoe. I did all of my driving lessons in an original Renault 5 TL in 1981, so they still hit a sweet spot.

The seats look somewhere between the 5 Turbo’s and Renault’s “pétale” seats. Fabulous. Love the headliner texture and the quilted dash padding. A shame the instruments aren’t configurable like the ID2’s to mimic old-style Renault ones. I think Reno is pronounced exactly the same as Renault. I’d be hard-pushed to choose between an ID2 and an R5. It’ll come down to price, European content and towing capacity, I think.

My only bug-bear with this car design is, they could have put little bit consideration into the rear legroom for taller passengers. Just widening the wheelbase by a wee bit more and it would have been fantastic. Even the colour on the seats is muted enough to be fine, it's not in Z1 territory.

I like it apart from those great big displays stacked on the dash like a wall, and lack of physical buttons. Everyone is doing it now and it needs to stop, potentially be legislated against. I've been thinking at a minimum when the car is moving, touchscreen cars should have some kind of static screen with basic controls that cannot be changed until the car stops, but you could make it configurable. The idea is to remove distracting menu navigation and fumbling which is no different to using a smartphone. From an external design viewpoint I'd make the window line lower, about an inch - but that's about it. The bonnet display is cool.

Whilte this is all well and good for those doing city driving and short commutes Renault needs to do the Renault thing: Rip out the rear seats, widen it by 10-15 cm, incl;uding massive flared arches, add 10-20 kWh of battery behind the driver, and another ~170 kW of power, all going to the rear wheels. They could call it the Renault 5 Turbo. (And yeah, I know, I should just wait for the Cateham Project V)

I do love that you just hold a notebook and refer to it. More presenters should just do that so they aren't wasting time trying to remember everything off the top of their head like they're a Mentat. :D When talking about things like creases and shape of the body though, I honestly really care if they're going to tell you how it improve the aerodynamics. Do the 'lines' above the wheel arches do that? How about the apparent gaps around the logo and headlights? Are they for air cooling/aerodynamics? I get the impression letting some air flow inside the wheel arch and around can be better for aero even though that might seem counterintuitive. But if there's a gap and it doesn't do that, or worse, reduces aero, the design is just bad. It's either a positive or negative attribute so it's worth mentioning if only briefly, including mentioning their actual figures for how aerodynamic they've made it. It seems the editor missed the bit where you wanted to show the comparison of size between this, and the Twingo etc as well. It seems that's coming out in 2026 because Renault are incredibly behind on their development and manufacturing, but it should be smaller and they currently speculate it might by £17. It's clearly the car they should have released first. They could have made a serious dent in the market with that. The 5 will probably be handy second hand by the time the Twingo comes out though.
