As a Frenchman, it is wonderful to see French manufacturers returning to innovative, well thought out, quirky but attractive vehicle design while keeping to the cost conscious ethos that were at the foundation of so many of our cars. If this very cool "5" had been priced at $50K, it would have been a joke. As a side note, thank you Mr. Smith for always taking the extra editing time to show viewers cut away shots that allow us to visualize historical references. So many presenters speak to how design cues remind them of this or that but fail to help remind the viewer, visually. This shows incredible attention to detail and is, in part, why this channel is, finally, growing to the deserved level. My only regret about the Cinq, besides wishing that it could have an ICE, is that I, likely, won't ever get to drive it. I live in Miami and will, likely, never move back. Renault did quite well, in the US, with the Le Car (the name given to the 5) but botched it up. French arrogance, thinking that they could just keep marketing without product evolution. Peugeot was even worse when they tried to push the 405 here. Their commercials featured upper crust, tweed fancy dress, Europeans driving up pebble drive ways leading to a French castle. They were convinced that Americans would swoon over the possibility of feeling like European royalty. Was a pathetically stupid error. Sadly, they gave up and have never been back since. Sorry, I went off on a tangent but I am bitter that everyone across the pond gets to enjoy these vehicles and that I don't. =)
@jamesellsworth96738 ай бұрын
I enjoyed your entire post. The view about Peugeot led me to say that I always thought of them as being a bit upmarket and good on them. As a professional-class couple, my wife and I would definitely arrive at a chateau in one. We did with rental Audi voitures. I was hoping to move from this video to checking out our local Renault dealer.

They should think about selling these in larger North American cities through the Nissan stores. I can see these being a hit on this side of the pond too if they were ever offered.
@Oklm238 ай бұрын
@@fastEdCanuck I agree! I mean they do sell the Fiat 500e and the BMW i3 here, which are about the same size (the Fiat is smaller actually), and to be honest I'm sure most people would choose this instead, especially if it starts at $25k. I think French manufacturers are just afraid of failing again in the US so they don't bother trying, but selling them in Nissan stores like you mention would limit that risk considerably, I think.
@jonevansauthor8 ай бұрын
@@fastEdCanuck 100%. The American audience believes that they don't like compact cars. If you don't offer them compact (e.g. correctly sized) cars, they won't buy them. It's a self fulfilling prophecy. I know they've got ego problems as you can tell by their pickup sales, but part of that is encouraged by their corrupt politicians supporting those trucks with weird regulations. Almost as if they were directly bribed. Meanwhile, there's 360 million people or more, and some of those are younger, live in dense cities (real cities, with high populations, not villages and towns that call themselves cities but have 3,000 people) or care about the environment, or don't care about features they won't use such as the ability to tow a steam train at the weekend. Plus, as I understand it, Americans are just as likely to be two or three cars families as anywhere else. What rational human being wants their 16 year old in a huge vehicle with a fast engine?
@jonevansauthor8 ай бұрын
@@Oklm23 yes, the market for cars that are actually available to purchase and small, will always be far larger than the market for cars you don't choose to offer. The silly idea Americans only want pickups is just a lie spread by ICE advocates because the companies want the large profit margin and also are grossly incompetent on the engineering front, so can't make efficient production lines. It's nothing to do with what younger, poorer, more environmentally conscious citizens who might not even have a family that requires more seats, wants.

This car seems to have it all. Clever, stylish and intelligent design - inside and out - along with the latest tech, and a heat pump as standard on all models. Together with what could be a competitive price, this car could mark a turning point in the EV market.....

Another great video Jonny. Keep them coming! I chuckle everytime you start talking about the wheels because you know the black circles promo is coming up!!

The last tyres I got, I got them via Asda Tyres. They were a bit cheaper than Black Circles.

I quite quite like this, although it is a little small for me. My Megane E-Tech Techno+ arrives in two weeks! Renault killing it with their EV offering.

This will be the hit of 2025. They knocked it out of the park. 10:47 what Johnny said here really resonated with me, I truly believe that too. Wonderful presentation as always. REALLY want one of these 😭😭

What a gorgeous car. Thought the Zoe was unique but this is masterpiece. Used to own a Renault 5 in the 90s. Jean-Michelle Jarre is a very popular French musician.

Finally a good looking Renault again. I also don't understand why retro revivals should be a bad thing

Oh, I want one SO much!! It's lovely - all the styling cues of the original R5 (tick), looks like it has column change (double tick, as former R16 owner) but there's one thing I'll imagine that will be missing, sadly: that lovely roly-poly ride from the all-torsion bar suspension of the original.

That's no problem. Just buy an old Land Rover Discovery, then you'll scrape the door handles at every corner....

A brilliant review Jonny. I like it.

I am completely sold on this car, it ticks all my boxes. The design is quirky and amazing. The French should be proud of their innovation, design and engineering prowess. Can't say the same about those things in the UK but this is the reality.

What an excellent preview. Love the styling but surprised that it doesn’t offer more range than the ZE50. Maybe like the Zoe, it will get battery upgrades with every future revision.

I like the look of it, can definitely see cues to the old 5. Nicely done

Absolutely love it. Sections all around the r5 that remind me of my original gt5. I’m not in to ev’s not yet at least but this model is swaying me towards an ev. Think I’ll be booking a test drive when possible. Love the way it looks both outside and in side. Well done Renault

I'm getting flashbacks of UK garage coming out of twin Halfords 6x9's in the parcel shelf and a big stereo speaker in the boot instead of a sub, lol.

Great video Jonny. If I had the money I'd be really keen on getting one of these in a bright colour!

Mini SE owner here and all I can say is bravo Renault! You’ve proven a small EV can have an acceptable battery capacity. We just love our Mini for styling, supportive seats, cockpit full of honest to god physical buttons, and zippy city battle kicks, but the paltry 200km range (160ish in the dead of a Toronto winter) is less than ideal once you venture beyond the burbs. We couldn’t run this car in anything other than its status as a second vehicle. The 5 offers the complete package, although I hear sadly not available in Canada or US?

I own a Zoe currently and my first car was a Renault 5, so I’m very interested to see the new R5 in the metal. The idea of a twin motor RS is really exciting.
