My dad’s secretary had one. She got caught speeding and ended up in court. When asked “why were you doing 60 in a forty limit?”, her answer was “slowing down for a roundabout”. The book was thrown at her and she was banned for a couple of months. 😂

A mate of mine did a speed awareness course, and when they got the little bit of cardboard to write down their names for the lecturer, he decided to put "Ayrton Senna" on it. The lecturer had no sense of humour and threatened to throw him off the course and collect 3 points unless he apologised. Whoops! 🤣🤣

My friend's brother had a black 205 GTI when we were younger, there were Renault 5 Turbo's aplenty, and also another friend of mine had a Citroen AX GT with a rally head and cam.. that car used to fly as well, much like the Renault 5 it weighed nothing. I found a 300 mile Mini Metro in a barn - a literal farmers' barn in 2010. Now a Mini Metro is not that special - but it was in mint condition with 300 miles on it, so I contacted the Mini Metro owners club and gave them the chassis number etc, I was immediately contacted by a very excited guy. It was from the same donor chassis production run as Colin McRae's 6R4 and this guy HAD a Colin McRae crashed 6R4 he needed a shell for. There is a difference on the donor shell, you cant use a standard 3 door metro for some reason. Anyway - I paid £250 for it and sold it for £1500 so I was happy and happier that it was going to a GREAT place...

I had one of the earlier models, a "C" reg version. Had it for a couple of years as a daily drive. Fantastic car to drive and I found it not too thirsty for fuel. Overtaking was a pure dream, often not even needing a down change given the torque available. I'm now retired and living in Australia but I have very happy memories of my R5 Turbo and wish that I still had it. Would love to see a video of this car after the renovation.

This is great - you have brightened up my Friday. I owned a red 1988 GT Turbo back in 1991 and also owned three 11 Turbos. All were daily drivers and with correct maintenance including the correct oil - Shell Gemini I recall was effective but changed every 4-5000, quality magnesium tipped plugs every 7-8,000 (£10:00 each then!) and regular coolant and temperature checks, they were capable of long distances and shorter blasts with excellent reliability. The phase 2 Renault 11 Turbos running the same engine but with 5 bhp less, were a real Q car when de-badged and could easily worry other fast cars. They are even rarer today than the 5 GT Turbo. Let's hope that this Tungsten Grey example is fully restored and pampered in its old age. Fabulous.

GREAT EPISODE - I bet dollars to donuts that the front splitter damage has everything to do with the dented speedline alloy in the hatch. The driver at the time knew it would be some time to get that wheel round again, so he rotated the spare to the rear and ran the rear alloy up front. Probably understeered into something that took it out.

Ohh the joy! E872 GLO was my baby back in the day. Gloss black she was. Drove her to GT tuning in Poole from Manchester and had the full works. Superchip'd, adjustable boost, turbo uprated, new clutch, air filter, dump valve, strut brace. Some of the best fun I ever had on 4 wheels. No power steering. A proper drivers car. Great times dispite the fuel pump failures, electrical issues, head gaskets, water pumps lol. Driving while the dash vibrated and lit up like a christmas tree, while catching the interior mirror as it fell off lol. Nearly crashing while trying to get a tape into the radio because of its daft position lol. Climbing though the boot when the fob stopped working because you de-locked the doors. All typical issues for most GTT owners. 1000s spent but I loved her. She eventually was written off. Wrapped around a set of traffic lights by her new owner 3 weeks after I sold her. Good times 🖤

Great episode, my neighbour had exactly this grey phase 2 version and at the time I had the Nissan Cherry Turbo, which was fuel injected and quite an advanced Bosch based ECU setup. We always laughed at the hair dryer that kicked in after he came home to ensure it restarted, and often it didn’t leaving him rather grumpy. But I always wished I had the R5 as it just looked so damn KOOL. Brought back a lot of memories Jonny.

Had one of these in the early 90's in London. Insurance quote was ridiculous one broker said he couldn't insure me until I was 30! I purchased it from a guy in Deptford as I lived in New Cross Gate at the time such great memories driving this car from speeding tickets to my mate Pete breaking the electric window after mooning at someone as we turbo wooshed past. Annoyingly it had a CD player which would jump every time we went over a bump. I also recall getting stopped by the old bill at 'The Ring of Steel' in the city after a night out and the cop wanted to see in the boot and thought the jack was a gun as it was in it's black pouch!. Sadly it got stolen from outside my flat, but literally a go kart on the road never a dull moment. Fantastic episode love it Johnny keep em coming!

Great to see and hear the engine fire up. Have 2 little 5 turbo stories. My mate had a gordini turbo. He wrote it off after someone pulled out in front of him . He said the steering wheel actually bent round to nearly touch the steering column.. so not the strongest thing in the world. The other is watching an elderly lady give a 5 turbo gt raider( the last of the line blue one) a full rev. Slipped clutch unintentional launch across a waitrose car park... looked impressive. She looked bloody frightened. Great video as always Jonny. 👍🏻

What dreams are made of… That complete intact interior and even the inter cooler strap. Wow. The sound is what got me hooked on these, rattly tappity front end and deep angry burble out the rear. Only the Astra GTE 16v had legs on these, when considering the R5 is a carbed 8v 1.4 dating back to the 50’s…. My old 5 running a bar of boost made 148bhp but an astonishing 179lb of torque that hit hard right after 3k revs. Plenty for sub 900kg. My fave bit are the brakes, so much feel.

I was in my 20s when these cars were about. I worked in a garage at the time and drove quite a few hot hatches of that era, and the 5 GT turbo was THE one that struck awe into many a spotty young driver. It's amazing what Renault did with a carbed pushrod turbo engine and 105 horsepower. I love em and this was a real nostalgia fest for me. Fantastic

My mate had one in blue and i had a Mk 1 Golf GTI. I was secretly quite jealous as it was such a hoot to drive. Brings back great memories.

There's something so nice about lightweight French hot hatches. I got comprehensively schooled by a 5 GT Turbo when I was driving my old Astra GTE, at a set of traffic lights in Wolverhampton in the late 80's. It wasn't that the 5 was a nose ahead, it was several car lengths ahead :) Later I bought a Saxo VTS and that was a lovely chuckable car, really responsive and so much fun to drive quickly.

Always so much better when you see them come to life in the episode. Even when the dash lights come on with a fresh battery it’s a nice feeling.

Enjoyed watching this. Had a white one in the mid 90s and loved it, also damaged the bumper in the same place in Epping forest taking the kids out when they were little.

Slightly jealous. I’ve been in a few of these back in the day as a passenger and my god the sense of speed was unreal.

This brings back memories of being young and owning one, briefly in the late 90's and taking a new girlfriend on a few road trips in it. Made me chuckle when Jonny noted the missing part of the front bumper, as the last time I drove my one down a country lane, I hit a pot hole and ripped off the nearside bumper, just like this car! I could ill afford to run it and quickly realized that I would probably end up either losing my license, or wrapping it around a tree. A mate fell in love with it and bought it, unfortunately he lost control of it and it was a right off. Luckily no one was hurt, but sadly the car met its end.

…this brings back memories, I bought a new one from Trinity Cars , Wandsworth Common London in August 1988!! It was also Tungsten gray metallic. (F 456 DGK) . I had it for a year, only thing that happened was a snapped clutch cable. Very fast and fun to drive…

Owned one in 1990 when working in Jersey. Best car I have ever owned. Pearl white with full sliding sunroof. Massive torque steer but great fun.

Somehow a group B Renault 5 Turbo (factory rear/mid engine, wide body) ended up in a field in Salem, Oregon, USA, and now it's back on the road going to shows around the pacific northwest. Epic!

Brilliant video this, loved the Renault 5 turbo but what also really appealed to me was the classic Honda 550 four! It’s sacrilege to see it just sitting in that barn!! I had the 400 four way back when & am sorry I sold it!! Cracking find that car though, good luck to the new lucky owner 👌

I Had an H reg one of these. Had to sell it when my first child. An awesome little car. Back in the early 90's no garage wanted them on their forecourt as it would have Been stolen in no time. Renault did a mod on the turbo as some caught fire. so many people would say to me "you've left your car running but it was just a fan cooling the turbo.

As an American, living in the best country on earth.........I know, just kidding. I'm American, but I've had so much enjoyment out of the European vehicles I've owned, and had the pleasure of driving, I truly miss the 'old days'. We had 2 Sprites, a TR6, our dad had a 3000 after he had sold his '58 Corvette, maybe a '59, can't remember. The Land Rover was an off road beast, my feet were too big for a 911, but what a fun car to drive around the beach area. Europeans know how to make something fun. Don't get me started on the Maico 490......

Loved that. I drove one once my mate had a garage and needed to deliver a car to a customer. The choice was a Porsche 944 or a Renault 5 GT Turbo needless to say took the later. No other car since has put such a smile of elation on my face since. A true classic. I would love to see an update in the near future on this amazing barn find
