If you did the wheel centres silver with a black rim it would give it that small wheel with tall tyres look of a standard Allegro, might help sell the sleeper look a little more. Fully silver wheels are going to look massive and would definitely give the game away too quickly. It's nice how well everything is slotting in up front, especially not having to have the cooling components on display.

If i recall correctly he will be using the original silver hubcabs on top as he explained in a section of the second episode. In the first episode of the series the car was "rescued" with a similar setup and Johny seems very keen to preserve that look, which i don't think is that crazy since the black wheel with the orignal hub cab looks very nice and sleepery at the same time.
@scotti_wan_kenobi2 жыл бұрын
@@SturbokSensei yes he'll use the original chrome hubcaps but no Allegro was ever supplied with black wheels from the factory so to maintain the illusion of "standard" the wheels have to be silver. Even though they look better in black.

The VW mk3 (non VR6) knuckle is the exact same as VW Mk2 knuckle. I went through the same conundrum trying to “update” and rebuild my 28 year owned VW GTI, recently. Similar idea a sleeper swap but add reliability. I was told many things, track width issues, etc. bought the bits and came up with the same configuration as you have. I simply love this project. It started from a perfect place and just gets better. Mission creep is justified by the outcome. It is not as I would do it, but it is not my car and not my choice... But it is being done with such enthusiasm, such inventiveness and such passion that it will be simply wonderful. This is the content at which this channel excells. I avoid the slightly "smelly of the hard sell" eulogistic and blinkered claptrap about Chinese MGs, but this project is a marvel. And the chats with the like of Button are a marvel. And the mad clections in barns and lock-up are a marvel. This project, however, is the absolute cherry on the cake. Chapeau!

Aren't mk2 escort steering racks in front of the bottom ball joints? Or is it a flipped LHD rack? hope it's not the same as when a mate was building from scratch a Haynes locost in a council lock up out of stuff from the scrapyard back in the day. He pushed it proudly out into the daylight to show me it was on its wheels and rolling for the very first time. Once it was out the garage door, he steered right and it went left. He was quiet for a bit then said to me "do you think I could learn to drive it like that?"...... Luckily he saw sense and went back to the scrapyard with his tape measure for a forward steer rack afterwards. He did finish it and it drove really well in the end. Really loving the agRo project, some great engineering evolution going on. so glad it's getting steels under stock arches. My usual old car wheel colour choice is Simoniz wheel silver which is a few shades darker than most, almost a gunmetal, with a little bit of matting agent in the two pack laquer sealing it in. Then again, satin black would visually blur the wheel / tyre so it could pass as 155 / 80 13's from a glance instead of defining the big low profiles. Probably the stealthiest option.

I had an Allegro 3 with 1750cc, twin carb in metallic gold, a vinal roof, and round headlights as my second car in 1986. Cost me £900. Had to have the roof resealed as it leaked, and the exhaust manifold welded due to a leak but the heat shield was broken off so used to splutter and die as overheated in traffic. Carbs were a pain to get set up and would drift off so got 18mpg so sold it after 6 months! - the first car I had with 5 gears and I liked it but so many problems!

When I served my time at a truck garage, my foreman owned an Allegro. And being the apprentice I got all the servicing & repairs to do. The rear hydroelastic pipe went and dropped the cars back end. He rang the Austin dealer and they wanted some extortionate price for the pipe which he wasnt prepared to pay (talking 1983 prices) So I was tasked to replace the pipe with an item from the truck stores, I ended up using a braided hose from a truck and making the ends fit, the pipe was thick end of £150 and the stores never noticed it go missing.
