The Late Brake Show

Күн бұрын

Welcome to The Late Brake Show. The new Citroen Ami is an EV city bubble car that 14 year olds can drive, so long as you live in France. The Ami isn't truthfully classed as a car, but as a quadricycle restricted to 45kph (26mph), meaning in its home country you can be 14 or over and drive it legitimately on the road. These are known as 'sans permis' cars in and - putting it bluntly - are great fun city cars or the kind of vehicles certain people buy who may have been banned from driving. Yes, you could get prosecuted from driving and yet still drive one in France, because it isn't classed as a car.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
The new Ami fascinated Jonny because although it shares nothing with the classic Ami (made to sit in between the space age DS and 2CV between 1961 and 1979), this does distill so much of that basic, utilitarianism chic that Citroen is so good at. In this detailed review episode Jonny drives as fast as he can around what was the epicentre of the British car industry - Coventry.
The Ami is already on sale in France and a few European countries, although most people will rent it by the minute in cities, or lease one for as little as €30 per month. Buy one outright and they are €6000, which is half the price of a new Renault Twizy. Smarts are way more expensive, but way safer and more luxuriously appointed. The Twizy wins on range and agility, but the Ami is a more desirable cabin when the weather goes sour.
If you are in the UK and might be interested in buying an Ami, Citroen is gauging interest of potential customers by asking them to register here. If enough people are keen, the UK will probably seem available to lease or hire: info.citroen.co.uk/new-cars/c...

There is one such an electric bike. It is called Elf. This one is probably too heavy & too fast for a solar panel to be practical. Even Elf could be improved with a PTFE Solar panel that uses high-efficiency cells likely from Sun Power. A custom charge controller - motor controller board that is cooled by the frame may be beneficial as well. They could produce pouch cells like a sausage chain for future models to make it lighter :) due to increased voltage. In-wheel motors may also be used. Then there could be two independent batteries with little to no cables for each motor.

It's an idea, but all I can think of are the downsides: added cost, weight and complexity, and if this is mainly for urban areas (especially in Europe), not much sunlight opportunity. A 200W panel might be lucky to generate a fraction of rated maximum, at which point I'm not so sure it would be worth it. However, someone mentioned these might be a good tropical island rental, where this idea certainly has legs. Perhaps even Mediterranean coastal resort towns.

American here, I drive a 2015 smart. I would love an electric, but where I live there is a lack of charging stations and the weather is quite cold, so battery life suffers. My car is the smallest it can get for around here, but I do like the Citroen Ami very much. Not all of us believe that bigger is better. Horsepower wars all over again. Can't use the horsepower in most of what is driving around. 600 horsepower sitting in traffic on the way to work behind a 70 horsepower smart car and they laugh at me.

@@ajpdaniels I agree most of those belching out fumes are diesels and we were led into them by the same powers that are pushing electric. I agree sitting in traffic in an electric car is better for your health as is cycling however, the green aspect being pushed by those in power is a phalacy. Don't beleive me, then look up where and how the metals required for the batteries come from and where the batteries are made and consider how they are shipped etc. Then at end of life where do the batteries go? We need to get off the battery aspect because charging them isn't green either (for the most part). Hydrogen fuel cell is much more effective in the green stakes.

Loved the video on the Citron Ami that you started in Lichfield. How did I know it was Lichfield? You had been driving round talking about the car, the you said about giving it a proper drive. You came out of some gates on to round-a-bout , at that point I realized that on the other side was the road that took drivers on to my road, you didn't go that way of course as it was in a different direction to Coventry, but it was great to follow your journey going along the same route as we had taken ourselves to see family our selves in the past. Love your reviews and have subscribed. B.T.W. I don't drive, my husband does, I have a folding electric wheelchair, he has a scooter to use from the car for hospital appointments also for shopping as he sees as a complete waste of money to use the the car to shop, which was how we saved for the electric chair. I have got a large one but can't get it in the car so in the summer and winter before Christmas when its nice and can go out I will use by big W.chair, and he would use his electric trike.

Great video, the quality of the filming lately has really improved, well done! The car is oddly satisfying, it somehow feels like the future. I found it interesting that the people I noticed rubber-necking at it were an older generation, and the younger people couldn’t care less. I think that hints at a bit of a perspective shift of how younger people feel about cars. Understandable in massively congested cities, where vehicles are everywhere. It’s interesting to me, I love the utilitarian design features of it, the built on phone holder, the rubber trays, etc... perfect little city or airport hire vehicle. Well done Citreon.
