You can still walk forward with your trimmer but you just need to change the direction you rotate around your yard. For example, move clockwise instead of counterclockwise or vice versa. It all just depends which way the string is rotating - into or out of the beds.

Smooth vs level is a great point. I do commercial floors for a living, and it’s the best way to describe to someone the point of floor prep...to make the floor smooth, not necessarily level. A lot of old slabs would need extensive work to be “level”, and that’s a whole other process.

Do you use the factory blades or go to some aftermarket type. Also, why do mower blades have such a short cutting edge? Seems that if they were longer they would be more effective in that it’s now knocking over some of the blades but instead cutting them....more cutting are should equal less missed blades of grass??
@cbremer835 жыл бұрын
At the speeds they are spinning at, I don't think that matters all that much. Look at how fast you can go on some riders. And they have about the same ratio of cutting surface on the blade. I would think that someone tested this long ago and found it to be pointless to have more cutting surface. I could be totally wrong though. I am sure someone will correct me if I am.

My toro is terrible when it comes to bagging. I don’t bag a lot. But I wish it was better. It doesn’t throw the clippings to the back of the bag. So they collect near the front and the bag doesn’t fill as much as it should. When I dump the bag it’s maybe 1/3ish full. mulch’s good.

LCN- Another informative Vid- One thing to note on this Video is that your Honda Mower is the premium residential mower with a very powerful engine. It is a big step up from the $400 entry level Honda and results will also reflect that. Many homeowners just buy the basic Honda which while good, is vastly different than what you have. I am biased towards the Honda, since that what I have owned in my own yard for 18 years, and what I used when I was a kid. My dad used a manual real mower until I was in 3rd grade, when he brought home a Honda HR214 (1983 or something) I used that Honda on my own yard and on apartments in my neighborhood when I was a teen. The transmission went out on it in the mid 90's and my dad got a Honda Master's that he still uses today. I have used other mowers over the years at other people's places. My Grandpa had an Ariens Orange Reel mower as well as a cheap push (literally) mower. I have also used Yardman mower's with a cheap Honda engine. Nothing felt as good as a good Honda to me, but then again, that is what I know. I just bought another Honda , this time going with an HRC (my 2nd Honda purchased with my own $'s.) My old HRM215 lasted 18 years. It was really reliable and got used a ton for a homeowner. I usually mowed from March until November or even December. Most of the time every 3-4 days. Things I like about the honda- Super easy to pull the starter cord due to the BBC. It also starts on the 1rst or second pull every time. Even when I pulled it out after winter it would start on the 2nd or 3rd pull. Another thing I like is the reliability. Very Very reliable. The BBC is a must have in my opinion! So easy to move kids toys off the lawn or empty the grass bag without having to restart the motor I had two things go wrong in 18 years of ownership of my old Mower- Transmission in 2011ish- which cost $180. Then in 2018, my coil when out, which cost $100. I would change the oil each year, using synthetic 10w-30. I would take it into the shop every 2-4 years for a tune in the spring or fall. Still had my original bag and it worked well, with no holes. Some things I don't like about it were that the parts seemed expensive. My wheels needed to be replaced every 2-4 years, and weren't cheap. ($20 per wheel). My mower deck was so light that with a full bag of grass, it would pull the front wheels off the ground with each small bump in the lawn. Great Vid LCN. Always fun to try and even buy new machines. I only have one mower, but have 3 different trimmers- Easier to store in my garage than 3 mowers! All the best!

I had an old Honda mower (my dad did) too. I don't know the year but I want to think it only had a 19" wide cut - it was thin. Would have been about 1985 that we got it if I am remembering right. Upgraded from an orange Sears mower. that Honda was a great unit, had blade stop too which I think was the first of its kind - I still remember the iconography was a turtle and a hair for the speeds.

How would you say the Timemaster compares to the HRX as far as quality of cut or that “reel mower look”? Long story short I traded my HRR for an HRX and it was a $600 paperweight. I’d have kept the HRR but the back wheel seize was a constant issue. I’m trying to find a brand comparable to the Honda cut but without the incessant issues Honda seems to have between older model bearing and weak newer engines.

As for the string trimmer it spins counter clockwise so you want to walk (in forward direction) so it throughs away from the landscape. So if your house and the beds around it were a clock face (looking down from above) you would walk clockwise around your house. By going the opposite way not only do you through the clippings into the landscape but the clipping get tossed into the uncut that your trimming and works the trimmer more.

Do you know if the HRX series mowers have the same problem as the HRR's with the rear wheels locking up when trying to pull backwards? I've had two Honda HRR's over the past decade and each have the same problem right out of the box.
@TacoCrisma3 жыл бұрын
They don’t, but don’t bother. My HRR was phenomenal except for the back wheel seize. I got rid of it for an HRX. What an absolute mistake. The engine surges and significantly dips in RPM when you engage the clutch. I was mowing pretty tall grass so I did one pass using the rear discharge at 3, then a second pass at 2. From 3 to 2 the mower couldn’t make it 3 feet without bogging down. Total joke. My HRR was bush hogging at its tallest setting with ease, it just didn’t pull backwards anymore worth a damn. Avoid the HRX like the plague. Check out the HRN where the rear bearing issue was resolved, however be wary because those are reported to have engine surge as well. Funny you just asked this because this all happened to me literally yesterday on Wednesday. I watched this video to see how the time master did because I think that’s the only push mower with a comparable cut quality to Honda.

I have both and prefer the Honda. The overall build quality and sturdiness seems better. Also the Toro has difficulty when you want to back up the wheels don't move freely after u release the personal pace. From talking to other Nuts in Toro forums this is quite common. The Honda has no issue. Finally the Toro I have came with a Briggs engine which tends to idle up and down while the Honda purrs like a fine sports car. One area I prefer the Toro is when mulching or bagging . Although it has the annoying plug instead of onboard version ,I find the Toro chute area stays much cleaner when mulching or bagging while the Honda always had a bunch of grass in the chute after a cut. I also like the side discharge option on the Toro while my Honda had only the rear discharge which doesn't seem practical as it's throwing it on your feet as you walk . I love have the team with the two of them but I do enjoy the Honda a bit more.

Nice comparison but actually I think the Honda is better for long straight runs and the Toro is better for short ones. the Honda is less maneuverable and heavier to pull backwards IMO. @@wayneessar7489 The thing when you bagged is the front of mower got light and bag was not big enough. .but compared to mowers today it had a way better cut ..

Good stuff, Allyn! I’m looking forward to a future overlap video and discussion. Personally, I think speed and overlap are equally important!

As I make a pass, I’m looking for that occasional blade that got missed in the previous pass, then I pause and get the missed blade, then resume my my normal pass. Works well for me without having to overlap much and not double passing.

What kind of stand was that that you lifted your mower up with and where can I purchase it at

It's on amazon - it's just like a lawn mower kick stand amzn.to/2XXiF5E

A Scag V-Ride with a velocity deck would be ideal for cut quality but that mower is on another level from these box store mowers.

Thanks for the review, both seem to be great machines. 1st, video quality on this cam is far superior to your other review, other video had a continuous blurry area, a few feet away from the cam. My 1st thought was wow, Allyn got a new camera! 2nd I always do the backwards walk when trimming, takes a bit to get used to, but you'll get the hang of it, and your beds will stay much cleaner. Thanks for the content..Ken

I just stayed walking the other way this year when you talked about it in a previous video, wasn't much of an achievement for me but I have to edge out my sidewalks and driveways first now walking forward and then go around the house
