How to Choose a Lawn Mower | Honda HRX217 or Toro Super Recycler

My Honda 2018 HRX217 absolutely blows. When in full mulch mode, it leaks clippings into the rear chute which build up then eventually fall out the back leaving a trail of clippings on one side of each pass. The versa mow door doesn't fully close and seal tight. To borrow a phrase from my boy Connor Ward, it's a real pisser offer. There are plenty of threads on Lawnsite with people having this issue. It's not a one off with me. A similar thing happens in when in full bag mode. It builds up grass toward the top of the latch and then it they fall out. Plus it doesn't have great suction. The engine is a beast. The self propel is perfectly fine. I will be getting a Toro SuperRecycler soon and selling my HRX217.

I love my 2016 Toro Super Recycler with Honda engine. Aluminum deck too. Toro's personal pace is extremely comfortable and ergonomic. I found the Honda's self propelled system driven by thumbs to be fatiguing to my hands

I have a brand new HRX with the 200 CC engine. I also have a 2001 Toro Super Recycler with. Briggs 190 CC engine, and an Oregon Gator Blade. Honda Pros: Very powerful Engine Good mulching ability. Toro SR pros: Best mulching ability Personal Pace Drive. Second to none. Overall the Toro has a better cut, and is much easier to operate! If I had to mow everyday 8 hrs, I would choose the Toro. Toro needs to put the Honda 200 CC on their machine, end of story. I purchased the Honda for overgrown mowing with its larger engine, that’s all.

What is to consider on hp of mower. I have an impression that 190 cc is better than a 163 cc or 159 cc. Is that correct pls help im planning to buy a toro mower thanks

I haven't used Honda's new paddle system but I've used the old "lever" system with 3 speeds and that seems more comfortable in my mind than having to move the paddles with my thumbs - seems as though that would throw off your grip on the handle. With that being said Toro's Personal Pace is phenomenal. We have 4 mowers with it currently and I've used many Toro's with Personal Pace throughout the years. I often find mowers in the trash, fix them up, test them, and resell.

HRX217 comes in 4 different models. 2 models have hydro static drives (personal pace); 1 with, and 1 without adjustable throttle. There are also 2 models without hydrostatic drive (still self propelled), also 1 with, and 1 withou adjustable throttle.

The new 200cc HRX217 is causing guys to sell their 190cc HRX217s for pennies on the Dollar. This year I have seen more used HRX217s on craigslist than ever. I just bought a 3 speed HRX217 for $50cash and there is a hydrostatic right now locally for only $140.

At what point should you consider a wider mower like the Toro Timemaster? My total yard is 8,000 sq’ with 6,000 of it in the backyard with a fairly steep hill. My current 22” mower is on its way out and I’m trying to decide if I should go big or home! Thoughts?

Hi, what about HONDA HRR216VKA is a better value (at least on paper) than the Toro SR an Honda HRX217, cost about $400 ($380 right now), it has the same engine as the $600 Toro SR, twin mulching blades and and 85 pound weight (lighter than HRX 217) with. 4 year warranty. I'm not a honda sales person, looking to buy a new mower and I'm just doing my research.

I had that exact mower. Over all I was very happy with it. I mowed a huge half acre lot and my front yard with it for about a year. The mower worked very well with the exception of the drive. When I got rid of it I was starting to have the infamous wheel lock up when pulling it backwards. There are a million how to fix videos for it on here but it was still annoying. I'm back to needing a mower and considering buying another one. But I'm torn between just buying something used that gets or done or going for another new mower.

I thought Lawn-Boys was called Easy Stride? Dont quote me on that. I still have one of these. Its a 8480 from 1986. Still works great. I am getting a new Toro Super Recycler like the one you tested to go with it(The John Deere 14SE was going to cost too much to fix). Only difference between my Super Recycler and yours is mine has electric start(Got a few people who cant pull the rope). I'm willing to spend more for the Super Recycler VS the regular Recycler because of the aluminum deck. It will never rust. The aluminum deck on the Lawn-Boy is in perfect shape.

Yes, that was their version of Personal Pace. It was the exact same setup with the same parts. Im picking up a Honda super recycler tomorrow, getting rid of my 5 year old Honda HRR, which hasnt been a very good mower.

Starting to look at new mowers... I only have about 1500sq ft of grass to cut. Would it be worth it to buy one of those or look for another model of honda or the recycle series?

Justin Johnson If you have 1500 sq/ft, get an electric mower, best decision you’ll make for that size lawn. Highly recommend Kobalt 80v Max.

I used to love Honda mowers. Now, the only part I love about them is the engine. I have owned an HRR216 for 4 years now. The engine starts and runs perfectly every time. However, the drive components are terrible. The rear wheels lock up when they are pulled backward, which is a common issue that Honda only just fixed with the new HRN. The rear self propel wheels have already worn. And the two front wheels are out of allignment because the height adjuster is worn. Thats poor quality. I plan to get rid of it and buy a Honda super recycler.

I like Honda because it’s nicer to work on for me since they use the metric system. We have Honda and Toro at my work, and the Hondas simply have fewer problems and cut better from what people say.

Problem with super recycler, super cheap wheels without bearings. Mowers by other brands in a lower price point have wheels with real bearings. Super recycler sucks at cutting fine grasses and only mediocre at thick bladed grasses. The Honda is nice, but front end is too light bounces a lot. Mowers of yester year were better quality and cut better. Never been impressed with Toro, but their commercial golf or sports field mower are really good. Toro home owner models are as throw away as MTD

Never buy a Toro it's not made for whatever you're using it for it will only fail you if you use a commercially it won't last you 6 months choose a real one not a toro
