Instant Fusion did see competitive play upon release. It was even used in the 2007 World Championship (Monarch format) to bring out Reaper on the Nightmare for tribute fodder which let you use Book of Life to banish your opponent's Treeborn Frog.

At first i thought theres no way you can book of life it, it wasnt properly summoned, but upon looking it up your right and instant fusion treats it as properly summoned and can be revived. thats nuts

What's your source on that? I can't find any decks from worlds that played Instant Fusion. I know that the card some some fringe play in late 2007 Zombie decks, but those weren't around for the summer format due to lack of Zombie Master and Il Blud.

i remember how Temple of the king used to be able to also make you cheat out synchros from the extra deck, like rednova dragon

@@AlifieAbsinTh it didnt use to specificy the monster type, it just said summon a monster from hand, deck or extra deck and since synchros existed before it got banned, you could cheat them out too from the ED

No matter how much time passes, I will always be fascinated and intrigued by the Fusion mechanic. Links are my favorite extra summoning method, but before MR4, it had to be Fusions.

There were a total of 5 card types in the game: normal monsters, effect monsters, magic cards, trap cards and fusion monsters. *sad ritual noises*

OCG Land The first ritual monster was a promotional card after the first few volumes. Back in 1999. Fusion dates well back to OCG volume 1. Even back then Fusions were God awful.

About thousand eyes restrict In a way, it was more consistent than originally planned, even for its time, when compared with other cards from this time. Because Relinquished is a ritual monster, it benefits with standard ritual support and there was a searcher for ritual monsters released with Relinquished in Manju of the thousand arms.

Magical Scientist saw tons of play outside of FTK decks. In fact, almost every deck ran it as a searchable way to clear the opponent's board and counteract cards like Mirror Force. I'd also argue that Metamorphosis was banned due to its interaction with Malicious as it was used in the T-Hero deck, which was extremely popular during the summer of 2007. Although we can only speculate either way. Worth noting is that Jeff Jones got 2nd at YCS Toronto 2012 with Ultimate Axon Kicker, briefly making Psychic decks and Kicker itself popular. The card was arguably one of the weaker elements of the deck though, so it was often cut even when Psychics saw fringe play after that.

I think the best one to look at is pendulum summoning. It went from mediocre in due list alliance. Then broken with PEPE. It was so broken that it was nerfed by MR4, but it didn’t matter because of Electrumyte and firewall, which lead to the mess that was 2018 with pendulum FTK. Now it’s rogue but still the BEST DECK thanks to the pend god TRIFF.

Bring back specific hard to summon monster fusions

The issue is that if a monster is too hard to summon, they aren’t considered worth the investment. The harder issue would be actually making them hard to summon, considering how easy it is to throw in a random “fuse from deck” card and boom, there it is (especially if you’re playing with Verte legal). It’s either a case of people cheating out out regardless, or being deemed not worth the investment

Hard to fusion summon monster = super good worthy effect Easy to fusion summon monster = Less good effect Like Red Eyes dragun, why tf fusion either red eyes OR and effect dragon (ie litterally any other dragon monster). Bitch just keep dark magician and red eyes, run the risk to brick yoursef with 2 big yellows to summon a broken fusion. Balance. But even then there would be no risk bc today you just search your whole deck to do the fusion on your first turn and win in that same turn.

I miss when fusions had very specific named materials, sometimes even a merger of the monsters could be seen in the final result. It’s not as creative anymore and way too generic.
