Who remembers Billy Mays and his info commercials? Every year I have to have the “don’t Billy Mays” your writing. Today was the day. Billy Mays writing is “Hey my name is_____, have you ever or do you know, well I’m going to tell you.” This mostly happens with informational writing.

So who cuts all of those pieces out?? I did something like the first activity, and it took me over 20 minutes to cut out the strips for 25 sets....and that was using a paper cutter! What is time consuming is taking all the strips of paper and collating them with a paper clip. Great idea but SO time sucking for teachers. Yes, we could have kids cut them out, but just doing that would take them 30 minutes, which is a waste of instructional time. I wish there were a way to do this digitally to make the piece move.

If you have 25 students then you only need to have 8 sets of this activity. And the key is saving it for the next to prevent from having to do it all over again. You can also get assistants, and front desk receptionists who like to help, or even send them home with family members. The impact this has on supporting students' conceptual understanding of text structures is well worth the prep time. I can assure you, I do a number of these activities and I am never disappointed with the outcomes of my learners. Hope these ideas help.
