I moved into a new neighborhood, woke up, started my unsilenced bike. A couple of doors opened, some guys came out, peeked, went back in. I thought, "oh boy, this us going to start a problem!" A couple of seconds go by....now the neighbors are warming up their bikes, the old dude next door pulls out his 69 yellow Camaro, glass packed, straight pipes, ahhh, this is going to be just fine!

30 to 1 reduction. I don’t know much about turboprops, so is the reduction a gear drive or something like a torque converter for a auto transmission?
@thelightersideofrc

Hello Kevin. There is no direct connection to the engine. It is another section that is driven by thrust. I think!😂
@LemmingGoBoom
@LemmingGoBoom 3 жыл бұрын
@@thelightersideofrc Yup, in a turboprop like this there is no direct connection between the compressor/turbine shaft, and the propeller shaft. There is another turbine in the exhaust stream of the gas turbine which is referred to as the "Free Power" turbine, this is what extracts energy from the exhaust stream and converts it back into rotational energy to drive the propeller. In this situation the main turbine is often referred to as a "gas generator" as that is effectively what it is doing, generating gas to drive the free power turbine.
@kwhp1507
@kwhp1507 3 жыл бұрын
Thx for the info. I just never thought about looking it up. I always noticed rotor heads and props never turned when these engines was at start up and low rpm but never thought to look into it. I think I am going to have to now. It is interesting there is no direct connection. I guess if you have a prop strike it is less likely to completely destroy the turbine.

30 to 1 reduction is done entirely in the small gearbox you see, a final "power" turbine sits right before the exhaust splits up and is connected ONLY to the gearbox, in this case the power turbine is probably just a tiny bit bigger than the generator turbine so instead of spinning @ 160k rpm like the engine, it's probably spinning @ anywhere between 100-140K maybe more, still way to fast for a prop so it's reduced 30-1... So essentially, the 30-1 is direct gear drive reduction but just to mess with you? the way you get that gearbox to start spinning in the first place is very similar to a torque converter except instead of fluids it uses hot gases(which also happens to be a fluid lol) Technically, you could probably hold on to the propeller during start up and prevent it from ever spinning...(i'm just spit balling here, 30-1 sounds like lots of torque and 30+ years ago i got my fingers constantly mangled by a puny .49 Cubic inch nitro motor so please don't try it lol) Enjoy your headache :/ I'd love to build an electric bike or reverse trike and add a small gas turbine/electric generator pack on it for shits & giggle... probably a slightly bigger turbine running @ 100K rpm coupled with a similar 30-1 reduction to spin the generator @ around 3000rpms (or whatever rpm it requires) Based as much as possible on Chysler's turbine car from the 60s... Capable of running on anything from jet fuel to Chanel #5, a bottle of Vodka,ethanol,diesel,gasoline & even used dirty cooking oil (filtered&treated i'm sure). Using some form of heat exchanger to extract as much heat from the exhausts in order to pre-heat air before it gets into the engine to improve fuel efficiency as well as reducing noise by a LOT & lowering the exhaust temperatures for safety... My question is; how helpful could heating the air (and probably the fuel when it's diesel/cooking oil etc) before going in the engine be? considering it's just a single stage compressor/low cost inefficient RC engine... A little? a lot? not at all? nobody knows ? Would it be worth the effort/added parts?

Get some of that exhaust pointing backwards :P more thrust, up to 10ish %? I have no clue. Also, isn't the deflection of the turbine exhaust and compressor pointing aft removing thrust?
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc 3 жыл бұрын
In something like the PC-21 the scale tips have a slight aft facing layout to them. In this pc-6 this is the scale tips. Great questions on the thrust coming out of the engine. As it's directed sideways and not back I don't believe there is any effect on opposing thrust to the prop.
@VULVOLINE009
@VULVOLINE009 2 жыл бұрын
The Kingtech K45 engine in it's simplest form (pure jet engine) only produces 4.5Kg of thrust where as his Turboprop setup gives him 12.5Kg...a turbo prop sacrifices thrust velocity in exchange for thrust strength or power... i have no idea what the numbers are but i'm assuming the leftover thrust coming out those exhausts after having spun the power turbine/gearbox/prop is negligible... probably a small fraction of the initial 4.5Kg thrust the jet engine is capable of and coming out much slower than the plane's cruising speed so no help at all. i've always found single turbo prop airplane's exhaust pipes to be oddly shaped and quite long... it's mostly meant to keep the heat&gases out of the cabin & away from the engine's air intake when starting up&taxiing as well as away from your tail control surfaces when in flight(hot air is not a pilot's friend).Pointing the exhaust backwards would just increase your chances of getting poisoned and or starving the engine of oxygen when on the ground. At cruising speed the drag from the exhaust pipe probably offsets whatever thrust you could gain by pointing it backwards...

I think it depends on the prop used and spinner, on my installation of the K45TP I have no issued the spinner is a Carbonfiber from Desert Aircraft, and the prop is biela Turbo prop...the back plate is thin.. I should also added that the Teflon tubing can be used and it’s actually provided with the K100TP, perfectly safe... RPM is a little high.....should be keep at about 5k to unload for 7k max in the air...that’s from Kingtech.. ;)
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Daniel. Totally depends on the prop/spinner combo. With that I think they could have added slightly more depth to the output shaft as more depth should work with any combo of think backplate. Yes, the one I referred to in the video, the fellow cut off the very end of the metal tube at the gearbox and installed a piece of Festo tubing that was about 1" long. I agree on the teflon tubing. Great option.

i really want to gear reduce a small turbo prop like this and put it on a minibike as its drive engine, run the exhausts to the rear behind the seat a ways back and add an afterburner. mode 1: turbo shaft directly drives gear reduced transmission, this has a manual clutch as well as a CVT to remove shifting and add a redundancy in case of a runaway engine. mode 2: Jet prop Mode. in mode 2, the clutch is disabled at speed (aka disengaged from the motor), the engine is revved to its full AB speeds, then fuel and spark are dumped into the booster stage of the tailpipe and the bike is no longer mechanically driven by the turbo engine, it is instead pushed by its thrust, and the added thrust of the ReHeater/AB.

The ambient pressure is decreased due to the elevation. As a result, so will the thrust be decreased. Rough estimate is that the thrust at sea level might be around 30.13 lbf at the same ambient temperature. At 59 F, to try and move towards ISO conditions, might be lesser than the above stated number. Thrust without reference conditions is meaningless.

coming from years of experience in 100cc plus gas engines, that prop hub arrangement seems just dangerous in so many ways, and the "fix" does little to make it better. A prop that large (at least on gas engines) require a multi bolt arrangement, with the center spline coming a good bit the depth of the prop. Granted a turboprop is not generating the kind of torque or stress that a gas engine does, but that size prop needs some considerable safety margin when it comes to securing it. Just my thoughts. Even a couple of shear pins in the hub going into the back of the prop a 1/4" would be the minimum I would do.

The power pulses and vibration of a piston engine, and the possibility of a kickback, is what makes the prop hub have to be so substantial when compared to a turboprop. Has somebody converted this (or similar engines) to a turboshaft application for RC helicopters (JetRanger, MD500)?

Hey Charles. Most of the turbo prop setups are also available in a Heli style setup. Pretty neat stuff!

Awesome 😊, I know you purchased it. But casually, do you know how to build a basic turboprop engine? Or perhaps, some manual or planning who can help me to build it? It's for a college project.

Building one from scratch no. I wouldn’t even suggest trying it. I say that as I’m still not 100% sold on any of the turbo props out there! Haven’t seen any myself that go the 25 h distance and go back for bearing service. I know there must be some but not many!

Hello Terrence. The owner got a local machinist to make it up for him. I assume it's a pretty simple piece to make up.

Thanks for the response do you happen to have his contact info and ask if his machinist would be able to make up another one for purchase. Unfortunately I don’t have a machinist on speed dial.

Can the engine shaft be connected to a gearbox and to the shaft of a go kart and still power it???
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc Жыл бұрын
It's not a direct mechanical connection so in that case it wouldn't work.

@@thelightersideofrcThanks for reading my comment, what if we connect the turboprop's shaft to a cvt gearbox and run it??? I am looking forward to try it if the power of this engine is not enough then maybe I will have to Buy a PBS TS150.

Not enough power. If you were to start a TP and hold the prop. It would never turn.

@@thelightersideofrc I want to create a combined cycle genset, that starts with a turbine engine then feeds a sterling engine with the waste heat. But i think i've calculated the TE of this turbine at about 4%, lol.

Basically stick to manufactures recommendations. Kingtech has an oil chart now in the manual which shows all the common oils and the associated data.

I would be less disappointed in the thrust than in the run time for 32 oz. of fuel. Five minutes (give or take) is not a lot.
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc 3 жыл бұрын
For the amount of push it's pretty reasonable consumption. If you were to use a turbine that's giving a 28lb output thrust 32oz of fuel might last 2 to 2.5 min.
