Mozilla needs to get out of the drama news. We don't need the last useful non-chromium browser dragged through the mud for any reason.

The fact that they are the last useful non-chromium browser is the reason why they are dragged through the mud. Since they are the last competitor, Google pays them to avoid the antitrust issues. This makes Mozilla a very easy target, low hanging fruit, for corporate psychopaths (especially women + LGBTQ + DEI types). Because Mozilla is guaranteed that money even if they don't do much.

Maybe COSMIC will be a competitor to GNOME and make them run and be better. At the moment GNOME has a semi monopoly since it's the default on major diatros and that's why they developed the attitude to not communicate and be open to outside opinions. If you are a serious Linux user, I would recommend Xfce. What you do not realize is that the GNOME desktop and even KDE to a lesser extent are two of the most bloated Linux interfaces. Xfce, on the other hand, should function well even on lower hardware.
@JacksonNick-j6i3 ай бұрын
@@novaTopFlex Bloated is a misunderstood word. Bloat is when the memory and disk space allocated by the program is wasted on non productive executions and functions. For example, Gnome uses a lot of memory, but does all that memory assign to an instruction or feature in the program? If not, then it is wasted on the operations that should not use that amount of memory. On the other hand KDE Plasma uses a bunch of memory because it has a bunch of features and operations to feed. And Plasma is generally more optimized than Gnome since its developers are way ahead of Gnome in term of skill. XFCE is nice. I'm waiting for Wayland support.

Mozilla Corporation is different to Mozilla Foundation (aka Firefox). Even if Mozilla Corp went under it wouldn't necessarily mean the end of Firefox. Firefox has been around a loooong time now and has several forks. Rather disturbing the amount of sexism cropping up in the comments. Other male dominated corporations have their fair share of corporate bullshittery going on between management/CEOs/boards (see Microsoft, Google/Alphabet, Apple, Sony, Facebook/Meta, etc., etc., etc.) without crying that feminism and DEI is destroying the company. This has nothing to do with sex/gender and everything to do with the same profit pushing and human ego EVERY large corporation suffers with. What some don't seem to understand is that Steam recording is kind of a game changer for Linux, yeah, you could use OBS with some community plugin for what is essentially shadowplay mimicry, but the UX of just pressing a key combo, having that be out of the box? Now that's peak.
@ihateyougoog1elol3 ай бұрын
There's also GPU Screen Recorder which is much more performant and convenient than OBS. For the moment it's probably still the best option as Steam lacks important options (you can't choose to save a section of video without going into the editor and clipping it, so unless you set a 2 hour long buffer or something you pretty much have to open the editor then and there if you don't want to lose the moment you wanted to record), but hopefully Steam will get a "permanently save raw" hotkey or a "clip last X seconds" one. For now Steam's feature has the advantages of controller combos instead of just keyboard ones as well as being tightly integrated, making clips easy to share.

Let's start again and not leave quite so many possible security holes in it, and work towards modern hardware and modern software principles and stuff. Maybe add support for Rust? Just a thought ~ I guess I lean towards Wayland, but all I really care about is that Mate continues to work. At this point I'm on an i7-6700 + nVidia card, but some time around Christmas I plan to write a Dear Santa letter and get a Zen 5 Ryzen 9 rig with a low end Radian card in it. So in the short term, getting along with nVidia matters to me, but into the mid term, not so much.

Wayland is not the solution to these problems, I would like to retain access to simpler X11 window managers that require significantly more lines of computer code to be implemented in Wayland, and I am afraid that Wayland is a bloated solution. With all of these issues I sometimes threaten to switch away from the Linux GUI and only use the TTY (tele-typewriter) interface on my system, better known as the command line interface or its abbreviation CLI.
@Kneedragon19623 ай бұрын
@@novaTopFlex ~ Ok. I can't fault you there. I'm not 100% sure what the need for Wayland is, or what problems it solves. My understanding, what I read, was the old code-base for the X-stack, is just ancient code, and maintaining it is becoming a nightmare. It has hundreds of potential holes in it from a security stand-point, as one example. We just don't write code like that any more. If you go back to Ken Thompson and The C Language you also see a lot of code which is kinda elegant and cool, but we just don't write code that way any more. Fixing and updating it would be an absolute nightmare. Ok ~ So the reason for Rust is because it's a little bit baulky to write and work with, and the development kit and delivery are a tiny bit more complicated, but it is memory-safe by definition. It just completely eliminates exactly the sort of bugs and issues that plague the X-server system. Hence my mild suggestion that the whole thing should perhaps be rewritten in Rust. [chuckle] I'm not sure I've ever heard anybody describe the X-server system as simple. I grant you, Wayland's not simple either, but it doesn't try to do client + server computing like dumb Wysse terminals in a 1980 library on a Unix box, with 60 people searching the brand new original Larry Ellison / ORACLE library cattle-dog. I mean ~ we just don't build computers or computer systems that way any more. Taking that and adapting it as the 'graphics system' for all UNIX like computers... If you started from scratch today, I don't think you'd do it that way. That's the whole point of Wayland. Let's start again today and not write this like we were in 1975. Let's try not to leave hundreds of potential levers and triggers and opportunities here for script-kiddies to figure out. I'm not a cheerleader for Wayland, that's just my understanding of what it's all about. The X system is just ancient. It was written in a different time, to fix a different problem.

Regarding Cosmic, it's an alpha release. Expecting it to be polished, feature complete, and/or bug free is not an alpha. That being said ive been running it without any other DE to fall back on for over a month on my framework laptop. It's no where near gnome as far as features and polish, but thats not why people are excited. Its a new player in the game, it's a new tech stack that developers love, it's a team that's more welcoming for new contributors, it's free of legacy baggage, and it seems to be bridging the gap between tiling window manager and desktop environment which feels like it could be the best of both worlds.

I find myself trying linux about once a year. I want it to be great, i want it to be perfect, i want to ditch windows. Hope this driver will make it possible full time. I have found that Gta iv on pc is too buggy and laggy to work properly. I tried countless fixes and commandlines on windows, however the game broke in loading screens on some missions, causing the story to be unplayable. Tried it on linux with proton some years ago, it was perfect. Smooth as butter, better fps, no bugs, all missions worked perfect. Goes to show how great Linux can be. Even with a translation layer such as proton, running a notoriously bad console port made for windows, it still works wayy better than the os it was made for. That blew my mind at the time. It is great to see what a community can do, when they all work together. In this case it keeps my childhood favorite game alive.

I lost all esteem for mozilla when I discovered their budget and the ridiculous share actually used for Firefox development. Mozilla has turned into an activist organization that deals with American politics. I don't necessarily disagree with the progressive ideas they defend, but it has nothing to do with technology.
