Kacey Musgraves has made a name for herself on the country music scene for not compromising who she is. And while some might not like her open-minded lyrics, she doesn’t really care.
The young country star has done extremely well for herself, including multiple Grammy wins at the 61st ceremony, and she has had a fascinating journey to get where she is today. Musgraves started writing songs when she was quite young and worked some interesting jobs before she made it big in Nashville. I don't think you can compare her to Lana Del Ray. Unless you are comparing styles in fashion. She reminds me more of a modern Dolly Parton. She is so creative.

"not your grandma's country star" Have you ever listened to Dolly Parton ? She tackled labour rights, women's issues, and various other social issues in her music. As did a hell of a lot of other classic country musicians. Folsom Prison Blues? Sixteen Tons? Johnny Paycheck? We haven't seen mainstream Country/Western artists do this in a couple of generations. She is EXACTLY your grandma's country star.

Here's the thing. Old country back in the day was songs about issues of the day. Kacey also sings about issues of the day. Maybe Country Radio is the one that changed things by demanding that true country is about singing about issues of the past which is not original country. Just a thought.

I’m a long time fan of Kacey (6 years) and it isn’t a “new” genre she’s doing - it’s called outlaw country. Like Willie Nelson, she just goes against the mold and sings about things that aren’t usually touched upon in country music.

I'm so glad she didn't give her Arrow song away to Katy Perry. I loved so much shooting a bow and arrow as a kid and it took me back some years to see her shoot, walk over and fetch her arrow in the Follow Your Arrow Official Video. I always had a bow and arrow as a kid and still have one to this day albeit way more powerful than the 25lb recurved bow I used to shoot. When she shot that arrow it felt like cupid shot me strait in the heart and I saw fireworks bursting into shimmering hearts and slowly fading!

Its not really a new genre. Its outlaw country which intentionally goes against the nashville mainstream sound. Its not a new thing for radio to refuse to play an artist that doesn't fit the majority of the audiences views. I've loved her since Same Trailer and I love that she is being more appreciated but she's stuck in the middle of having views of a crowd that doesn't listen to country. Yes, she should be more recognized, but people need to be more open minded.

DirtyD subgenres in country music are weird though specially when it comes to red dirt. I agree with the fact she isn’t outlaw but maybe psychedelic country? Isn’t red dirt supposed to be more blue collared and based off “okie” and Texan values?

The identity of _traditional_ country music was never been restricted to blue-collar white folks. The genre has roots in blues and old-time as well various styles of folk music. The problem is that commercialized modern country forgot its eclectic roots and started playing almost exclusively to a very narrow audience. That ended up backfiring, as now a lot of artists feel the need to infuse country with other genres in order to make it interesting and marketable.

I myself am from the same East Texas environment that is not only lost in time but lost in itself. When I say lost I mean a respitory therapist still blows smoke up the asses of drowning victims. She is the breath of fresh air this stale environment needs, but many within this enviroment are scared to death of anyone, woman or man, who can present a new concept in thinking and living. I served with many heroes while in the Marines, now in the enviroment of East Texas lost in time, she is the hero of both the present and the future East Texans for she is idealistic in an otherwise stagnant enviroment lost in its own memories of grandeur. She has the type of faith so many here in the bible belt fear. She has faith in herself, her abilities, and the message within the words of her music. Bible thumpers and verse laden people here will say Only thru faith in the Lord can one believe in themselves. She has proven by having faith in oneself the God believes in you. She is a Rolex from a sun dial enviroment.

Thank you Kacey for creating an opening for me to appreciate and enjoy this type of country music whereas before, I was put off simply because I thought it represented something repressive and exclusive. I often feel like I wish I could travel and get to know Americans from the middle of the country but felt that I would be ostracized or even hurt somehow. I am now a believer in the power of transcendence through music! I can now add country music to my list of genres I like! And now to open up to the other ones I've closed myself off to........

Here's the thing.... Kacey isn't played (or WASN'T played) on country radio not because they're confused about whether or not she's actually creating country music, but because she called out some of the biggest labels in the genre. She called out Big Machine in her song "Good Ol' Boys Club" as well as just the environment in the business of country music. That had her shut out and BLACKLISTED from radio and award shows. That's why the album before Pageant Girl was bigger than PG itself.

Terrific review of Kacey Musgraves. The only portion of this video incorrect about Musgraves, is that she can not be considered anywhere near Taylor Swift. Musgraves is clearly, more talented and honorable in her humility. Musgraves appears as a sleek brown haired angel, to the liking of a modern Crystal Gale and the mystery of June Carter Cash. She is a truly talented woman who clearly is country with a bit a glitz. Enjoyable and relevant mix of songs that are spiritual and even Godly.

I agree with you 100%. Taylor Swift is nowhere near as talented as Kacey.

The fundamentality of it is she is the most beautiful girl on the country music scene aswell as the most creative and the most liberal and the sky quite frankly is her limit, I love her and she will go far.

I’m not trying to hate on this channel I actually enjoy their content and I feel it’s well informed, however, if you don’t know all your fact about something, don’t make a informative video about it. Country is more than the stereotypical stuff you think of. It was really the drive for America’s storytelling and a push for creativity. Don’t act like it’s all twang about beer. It’s more than that! Kacey Is just taking the initiative to carry on our roots to a younger audience. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

She like most of us is somewhat an enigma. Or a mix, if you will? She's so captivating I can't help but fall head over heals for her and wanting all the success she can attain. That said, it is a very important fact that all music is hypnotic causing us to attribute way too much power to its enticements and the good feelings it inspires. It also cause us to attribute way too much adoration and intelligence to the talent and beauty. I do give her credit for seeing threw most of all this herself for the most part. It is that very trait and her seeing threw all this that allows here to both possess and to come fresh to her unspoiled down homeyness and fresh to each song. You go Girl. But there are some definite dangers: Drugs, or any mind altering substances are dead end mistresses that entices all of us with it's lies. And one last danger. The music business is run by money grubbers who will literally run her into the ground with rigorous night after night scheduling until she drops if she lets them. Yes, this industry is a slow burn until one is just burned out and thrown to the ash heap the public never see. Yes, I'm a real fan of yours Kacey, but be super cautious about perils of drugs and the greedy money grubbers. P. S. It was not until I came to my very own knowledge of who Jesus really is (not someone else's version) that I got the answers I'm espousing here.
