Marilyn was not heavy set. A size 12 in the 1950s was closer to a size 5-6 now. Lucille Ball also wore a size 12 dress and she was svelte. Women’s clothing sizes have changed because WE have gotten obese as a majority and they had to enlarge dress sizes.
@horrificabomination4 жыл бұрын
Women's clothing sizes mean literally nothing. It's just numbers assigned based on what size would sell more. Eg. A more "high end" store would have the same sizes listed as 4 that a cheaper place would have as a 6.

In defense of the "healthy belly" comment. For the paleolithic era, to be heavy was to be healthy because due to the nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyles, food supplies weren't stable and movement was constant. Having reserves (fat) meant that (A) you're skilled at finding food on a regular basis, and (B) if necessary, you can go longer without food BECAUSE you have energy reserves, aka fat. Also the woman the statue is depicting is most likely pregnant as you can see her hands resting on the tops of her breasts, which appear to be swollen, possibly with milk.

@nymphrodellsalavin2 жыл бұрын
Obesity isn't necessarily unhealthy, it's far more complicated than that. Yes, eating unhealthily is bad as it can lead to high blood pressure and sugar, but there is no significant medical evidence linking subcutaneous fat (the squishy fat that's found across your entire body) to negative health effects. Meanwhile visceral fat (the hard fat that grows around your organs) has clear medical evidence supporting serious medical complications.

Since we have little understanding of how statuettes like the Venus of Willendorf were used by the people who made them, we cannot assume that they reflect that culture's ideals of beauty. For all we know, the statuettes could have been used to ward off evil -- in other words, the people who made them might have thought that they looked so terrifying that evil and bad luck would turn away after looking upon them. The statuette doesn't even have a face. Are we to believe that the people who made them thought faceless people were the ideal of beauty? Until we know more about how, why and when these statuettes were used -- which might never happen -- let's be careful about reading our cultural practices and views into another culture.
@graffitiwomen Жыл бұрын
I think they meant a body ideal, and being a bit overweight back then would've been a good thing. You didn't know if your crop wouldn't reach harvest, or if a drought came. There were so many unknown variables, I'm willing to bet that having extra weight was indeed seen as being beneficial to survival. Being 'thin' in the way western cultures perceive/d as beauty over the last 150-200 years ago is a relatively new thing. If you don't know where or when (with certainty) your next meal is coming from, anyone could deduce that having some extra weight would be good for your survival. There's also(of course) some racism in the beauty ideal of thinness. Cultural hegemony dictates what we see as beauty. I'm not advocating for living or eating unhealthy, I just think it's easy enough to see that the Venus of Willendorf statue makes sense from a biological and evolutionary perspective. You can't have a baby if you're starving to death. That's just a simple fact.

Vanity sizing plays a major role in morphing what women consider as "ideal" sizing. They say Monroe was a size 12. However, standard dress patterns were more universal in the 50-60's . A size 6 was considered as "small" and a 4 was "tiny". Drop vanity sizing and that will show what true sizes women are.

This video is kind of dumb. Sex symbols of the 50's wouldn't be considered plus sized. Marilyn Monroe was a size 4-6. Where did they get their information from?!

What if someone 25000 thousand years ago made a fat sculpture as a joke like, Person 25000 thousand years ago: *HAHA look at this fat sculpture isn't that weird, this won't probably be used as a example for what we liked.*

It's called fashion. Biologically we were created to be attracted to more curvy bods. Skinny was only because female form was hated or because of the flappers.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Confidence goes a long way and the way you carry yourself can be just as sexy.

Beauty is defined by the soul.The ability to show sympathy ,empathy. Being able to show love openly.The ability to see past the outer of other humans.Yea my lady isn't fat so people may say I'm a hypocrite. But hell when i found her she looked like a hobo.I met her looking like someone that had a masive hangover. But when we started talking and her heart opened up.I melt. People stop caring about that flab or bicep looking a bit sad.Be healthy but dont go out of your way trying to look like a super model.We're all human .We come in different shapes and sizes.Accept yourself and before judging that chubby girl or dude , just talk to them and find out what's their heart like.And fall in love with the person not the persons body...

I think you should be happy with the body you have but you don't have to be if you think be twenty pounds lighter would make you look good then do it as long as it's safe don't become unhealthy skinny and don't be unhealthy fat ether but I think guys should be able to say I like women who are skinny or have some muscle and women can say I want a guy who is ripped or skinny or tall that's ok and shouldn't be looked at as body shaming telling someone they have to change is bad for both your body and your ideals but encouraging someone to become skinner as a guy who has had friends do this it's the best feeling in the world to lose ten pounds

Stop saying that The Venus of Willendorf had a "Healthy" husk or whatever to it, that thing looked caked full of lard. Nothing about it's body showed that it was healthy, just because the thing never missed a meal doesn't mean it was healthy. We all know that eating certain things can be unhealthy, so being fat doesn't tell us that it was a healthy body being represented in the figure or whatever

Honestly the ancient Greece knew what's good. They approached everything scientifically, including beauty; and they celebrated sports and fitness of the body; when it comes to artistic portraits (sculptures, etc.), they celebrated realism. As a result, they had beauty standards that look healthy, decently athletic, and with golden ratio, not too fat not too thin.

Why is everyone saying thin woman are treated unfairly in this, if your thin you don’t understand how much easier it is to you then for overweight people. Overweight people are insulted daily wether it’s behind there back or right in there face so sure this video more represents the curvy side but thin people are represented everyday
@shamrock1415 жыл бұрын
Thin women put a lot of work into being thin it's by no means a privilege. They put in the effort
@diculis54325 жыл бұрын
Gavan Schultz i know how much effort goes into being thin considering i weighed 30 pounds heavier then i do some months ago but that doesnt change the fact that overweight people just dont know how to fix an issue and they get insulted for it unfairly
@shamrock1415 жыл бұрын
@@diculis5432 I'm not argueing against the poor treatment fat people get they don't deserve it. However I find it highly unjustified and hypocritical that many fat people criticise thin people for being "lucky" and "you don't know what it's like" because that implies that thin people were always just thin and never had to work to be that way

Who decides all this? In nearly every culture, men determined the ideals of beauty and desirability. Women very rarely determined their image.

Lol this is just western beauty/body standards. Fun fact: around 200 years ago, the Persians liked obese women with thick monoeyebrows and moustaches lol. Women would be close to 300 pounds and draw on a unibrow

Our obsession with not being fat started thousands of years ago. Fat has only been popular a few random times in history when huge suedes of the world were starving and going through famine. And even then, it wasn’t predominantly accepted.
