Following on from my last video looking at old Newcastle we take a trip over the River Tyne to remember how Gateshead used to be. So many changes over the years not always for the better. How many places do you remember.

When I started work in Gateshead in 1987, Gateshead surplus store was still there, and Laws herbal supplies. Where you could go inside and buy a glass of Sasparilla and drink it stood at the counter.

Poignant stuff there but some good memories. Many thanks for the comforting trip down memory lane. Just remembering my dad who sadly passed away a decade or so ago. He was born on Bottle Bank in 1927. It's very different now I expect. Great to see Shephards again. I remember buying my records in there as a youngster and going to see Father Christmas like it was yesterday. I've still got a cutting from the Chronicle of me as a toddler outside Shephards with the Honey Monster. Ive just gone down a nostalgia rabbit hole..... I really appreciate you going to the effort of posting this. Thanks for the trip.

Makes you sad. Was thriving back then. Loved the train station. Looked amazing and the trams. Clean transport. Bring it back

Laws Herbal were still around in the 80's I am sure. My mum used to take me for a Sasperella there as a treat.

My grandparents spoke of the tram system. It would be financially impossible to put that in place today

Gateshead indoor market, anyone remember the Trafalgar pub, and Ward Watsons, they had some great looking stuff but all cheap made trash you could get a watch that would loose 15 minutes in 10, there were some great shops, Littlewoods, Woolworths, CO-OP, never forget Shephards they had the best Santa's Grotto. How could such a great place go backwards instead of forwards.
