This is a 4K UHD review of the recent Criterion release of Ridley's Scott's 1991 classic 'Thelma & Louise'. Image aspect ratio is approximately 2.35:1 and the sound is DTS-HD 5.1. Running time is 2 hours and ten minutes. 4K disc has also had Dolby Vision for those with systems suitable equipped but in here I watched with standard HDR which provided a beautifully filmic presentation.
Also included in this video is the previous Blu-ray release and the NTSC LaserDisc which we've owned since 1994. The previous Blu-ray contained all the extras of the new release with the exception of a couple of new interviews recorded especially for the Criterion release. These are on the first of the two Blu-rays included in the 4K pack which also contains the film in HD but taken from the same 4K master as the 4K disc.

Ahhh…Nancy Allen. I had the opportunity to meet and spend a little time with her on the set of Robocop 2 here in Houston. I was an extra for one night only. It’s 2:00 am, and she was alone listening to music on her Walkman. I bravely approached her and struck up a conversation. She was cool and obliged. I’m a big fan of 1941, and we mainly discussed her experience with it. “Lunch” was called and we walked over together. I also met Irvin Kershner briefly, but will always remember that conversation with Ms. Allen, seeing as I had a huge star crush on her for quite awhile.

Somehow she didn't look so outstandingly attractive in the Robocop films. BLOW OUT was probably her best but 1941 is great too. Shame you didn't think to get her to sign a personal photograph for me!!! John.

@@moviecollector5920 Ha! I didn't even get an autograph myself. We were told not to ask. Agreed that she wasn't as attractive in those films. Maybe it was the short hair and police uniform. She was surprised I enjoyed 1941 so much, but appreciative.

Oh what memories Rob. The gals all seem to love Brad Pitt in this one so I suppose he was destined to be a major star from the moment the cowboy hat went on his head. Enjoy the 4K. See if you find it as funny as I do nowadays. I laughed out loud throughout so much of it and where I didn't I'd be sniggering thinking back over all the crazy situations and brilliant one-liners. Another brilliant review along with nice video editing and close-ups. I'm so excited as I have on order a Panasonic, new in the box, 4K player with Dolby Atmos. I previously ordered a refurbished model from eBay thinking I would save some money. Unfortunately it will not play 4k but does alright with blu-ray and DVD's. The seller apologized and said I could ship it back for refund or keep it and get a half price refund. I opted to keep it as it does play 3D brilliantly, so I will use it in my 3D TV room. The seller was very nice. My new player was bought from Best Buy on eBay. I have a Bose 900 Soundbar in my living room and sounds amazing. It should. It cost twice as much as my TV. LOL. Having a great sound is as important, if not more so, than the picture. Have a great day John.

Nice video, John. I love Thelma & Louise; I think it's one of Ridley's best films. I saw it in the theater back in 1990, and that damn ending stuck with me for days. Speaking of which, Ridley should've held that shot for two or three more seconds, just to let the enormity of their decision really sink in. That quick fade-out has always bothered me. Other than that, it's pretty much a perfect film.

The Blu-ray from years ago is very good Jim but it's not accurate in terms of colour. At least, I don't consider it to be. It's just too saturated. The 4K looks like a 35mm master print would have done as far as I'm concerned. John.

The composition of some of the shots to make the statement about the enormity of the American landscape is wonderful in this film. I think it sometimes takes a group of foreigners to focus in on a country when those of us who happen to live there may rather take it for granted. Then there's the music to accompany the great soundtrack. First class acting from everyone with some of the funny lines delivered so well that what could have been a bit of a drama based road trip adventure becomes a funny, entertaining work of art that is more repeatable than we ever really consider it to be. I could watch it again tonight and laugh through it all over again. There is so much going on at times that it takes multiple viewings to get the best out of it. Just look at Geena Davis's face when she'd chucking her luggage into the boot of the Thunderbird just before they head off. Susan Sarandon pulls a similar face when the boot is closing and Geena leans in to push the cases down. That sets things off if it hasn't been set off already. John.

Great review. Glad to hear the 4K transfer turned out really well. Interesting comments on seeing the movie as a comedy. Considering the subject matter I always took this movie more seriously and always felt conflicted with character's choices as situations escalated. Maybe I will give it another watch with that in mind. Haven't seen this movie in years. I appreciate the comments about the soft focus shots. I think many of us are quick to blame those doing the transfers to 4K/Blu ray and we forget that even the professionals in Hollywood who make the movies can make mistakes that can impact the quality of a film image. I'm starting to think in similar when I watch movies, I feel that I am learning as I go along.

The rape scene is hard hitting and difficult to watch Andy but that's just about it for serious matters in this one. I didn't fully take that in at first but every time I've watched it since I've found myself laughing more and more. I think it has some of the best lines in movie history with the ultimate being Harvey Keitel sniggering and telling Darryl, "You're standing in your pizza!" John.

@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 ай бұрын
Don't expect too much of Aliens because it's probably a bit of a grainy film if my Super 8 prints are anything to judge it by. I did see the 70mm blow-up at the Odeon three times but I don't recall much about how it looked other than when I later saw a 35mm general release print that was so disappointing by comparison. It might surprise us but I expect others will be claiming excessive image noise reduction without actually knowing enough about it. The Abyss isn't the best looking 35mm as it was a Super 35 then blown up to full frame anamorphic and does have computer effects in it which always means lower quality for those sequences. My Super 8 print of that is a beauty but with the limitations of the original film shoot. I only have True Lies on PAL LaserDisc but my recollection of that is that it's a bit of a stunner for LaserDisc. That one did not get a release on Super 8 but the trailer did and that again is a beauty. This should therefore be an indication that True Lies should be a fine grain, well defined original negative and hence another very good 4K. I don't plan to import a copy of The Abyss but I might get the other two. Whether or not I'll get all the way through Aliens I don't know but it will be a good excuse for another extensive Alien/Aliens film related video. I will always prefer to watch Aliens on film and that was and is the same with Alien so watching either on video would spoil the film experience a bit really. I did watch most of Alien on the 4K disc though - enough to do the review video three years ago. John.

I remember well projecting Thelma and Louise it was always more popular with women it was a girls night out at the pictures. I love Spielbergs 1941 always have, the 8mm 2 X 400 was one of my favourite’s and got a lot of runs not the best print from universal 8 but a great edit of the feature so I didn’t care. Spielbergs always said it was visually too loud for audiences I personally love the complete mayhem of the picture and destruction of pretty much everything, some superb model work I think the effects by A.D. Flowers are fab some of his best work. Not the complete box office disaster it was claimed to be… they got their money back, the John Williams score is brilliant I still play the soundtrack LP regular.

6:29 Well I have to admit I've never known any laserdisc player to feature such a button. Mind slightly blown away! I know that in the States Toshiba (I think) ran a limited edition offer with their late 90's rear protection TV'S and customers could get some WB studio Laserdiscs in 16:9 Anamorphic "enhanced" to watch on their new purchase The Fugitive , Free Willy and a couple of other titles. Never sold separately. However Japan, did get a good 12 (or more) "Squeezed" Anamorphic releases including T2, Stargate, Cliffhanger, Basic Instinct and other THX RE-RELEASE of T2 with the original Kodac 5.1 fold down to dolby AC-3 Dolby Digital. Which is one of the best mixes out of all the T2 collection. So what that button is doing? My guess? Taking the 16:9 image and unfolding it out for 4:3 screens if you happen to be that much into movies you have a new laserdisc player and bought an Anamorphic release from WB and didn't understand why everyone looks 6ft.6 and 2st light in the face. Love seeing the full history as always from Laserdisc to full fat 4k in the videos and the comparison to reflect 1080p vs 4k that it's not always a slam dunk with the HDR arsenal at the ready. Thanks again John and big ol' thums up!!!

Evening Martyn. I was hoping we'd get more information back about anamorphic 16x9 LaserDiscs and you're the first so far. I didn't know about the WB releases but I did suspect that Japan had issued some. I'd like to get a few of those, particularly any with a THX badge on them. I haven't got a CRT telly to check the 16x9 button but my recollection is that in a 4x3 image it reduced the height but on my 1995 Philips Widescreen I can't recall if it worked the same way exactly as DVD. I don't suppose it was required because the telly 16x9 button would have done the same thing and simply unsqueezed the image. John.

The rainbow effect is there but not as much as the older projector which is the UHD550X from about six years ago. Hi John, Apparently every type of man is portrayed in this film and being as Harvey Keitel is the only decent one it doesn't leave a lot of room to manoeuvre. This was to be Ridley Scott's only decent film of the nineties after a series of misfires until Gladiator in 2000.

It does rather poke fun at the male to female relationships but it's done so well. I've come to appreciate it more and more and today I think it plays better than ever. Ridley did have some other very good films in the 1990's it's just that they weren't recognized. I'm trying to think of the one with Nicolas Cage and Sam Rockwell playing con men. Not sure if you use PC's much John... I've got a 65" LG OLED connected up to my gaming PC with Nvidia 3080 graphics card, but my point and more interestingly Nvidia have released a new software app update to not only upscale low (although its any) resolution video on the fly but also implement HDR to the picture (you can customise what you want to happen, levels of quality etc or just the HDR). I know you can switch HDR on with standard definition/non HDR content but it looks poor, however this new tech from what i've seen/used seems pretty promising for adding life to older stuff as it seems to implement it well. I watched 1080p "The Void" the other night (a Lovecraft type siege film) and the dark scenes looked great compared to the movie as standard.

@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 ай бұрын
Where a 4K has resulted in a new Blu-ray you won't see a big jump in quality, just HDR for most of them that makes the difference and sometimes that is even difficult to discern until you really get into spotting the differences. You will only see big leaps in quality where a new Blu-ray has not been mastered and authored such as THE FIRM but even then some people think the Blu-ray is better. It isn't but they're used to seeing the film grain from the general release print used for previous home video releases and therefore assume that the clearer image of the 4K is wholly down to mastering and possibly image noise reduction. John.

Hello John. We saw it! Dune part 2 is quite a unique film. It's one of those films that could do more than one viewing, and I don't think I like it as much as the first part, but I liked it almost as much. It was worth the price just to see Christopher Walken on a throne as Emperor. 😂
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 4 ай бұрын
I didn't know Christopher Walken was in it and that can make a difference for me. We watched DUNE over the past two evenings and I seemed to like it more by watching it in two halves. I don't think it's exactly brilliant but it has a lot to admire within it's two and a half hour running time. I was prepared for that last 25 minutes being too dark and set the system up so that the HDR on the player was at only 25% but the laser lamp output was almost to maximum which meant that discreetly upping the HDR on the player to 75% almost made everything on screen visible without turning the image quality to mush. The bass in the soundtrack can make it difficult to stay in the room at times. John.
@timothymathetes
@timothymathetes 4 ай бұрын
@moviecollector5920 Yes, he is. Not a lot, but enough for me to get a kick out of seeing him as an emperor. I enjoyed seeing the king of quirkiness on a throne. The showing itself was an odd looking, though. There were black bars on the top, bottom, and both sides, and two thin lines appeared throughout. Work print? General release print? What do you think?
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 4 ай бұрын
@@timothymathetes It sounds like you saw it in a conventional cinema which will mean the aspect ratios are all over the place and the film hasn't been optically formatted to fit onto traditional 2.40:1 'Scope screens and so you're seeing all the various different aspect ratios but I'm not sure how many were used. Was it a film print or a digital video projection? I think general release movies should be formatted for 'Scope assuming that's the widest ratio used to make the film. In my opinion widest is best unless it's a genuine IMAX and then I'll happily accept 1.43:1 from a genuine 15/70 IMAX film shot and completed on film. It remains to be seen if I'll feel the same about 4K video blown up to 15/70 but I'm hopeful. As for the two thin lines throughout, if they were within the picture area then that can't have been right. John.

@moviecollector5920 I somehow doubt that it was digital. It looked like a scratchy film.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 4 ай бұрын
@@timothymathetes A film print shouldn't be scratchy until it's perhaps been run so many times but hopefully a few thousand. The odd white speck indicating a speck of dust on the negative and the occasional black mark of a spodge of dirt or dust that's managed to get embedded into the emulsion perhaps and that's it. I have a few 35mm general release prints and apart from a few marks that my own lack of knowledge put on a couple of reels they all arrived here perfect after being run in cinemas for several months. One does have a few missing frames where clearly something went wrong while it was running and damaged the film but that's it. Having said all this, we no longer have experienced projectionists in every cinema any longer and so they haven't had the long education from previous generations who had been doing the job all of their working lives. That could lead to a lack of care simply due to a lack of knowledge so if you were seeing a knackered 35mm print of DUNE PART TWO then that is a possible cause because no film print should be at all damaged after just a week of screenings. John.

I probably won't be purchasing this one. I enjoyed the movie when I first saw it, and the ending is iconic. However, it's just not the sort of film that in my opinion stands up to additional viewings. You realize, with some sadness, how forced the plot moves along, how silly some of the choices and decisions that are made, and ultimately the ending loses much of its punch and impact. Still, a great review as always.

You might be surprised Henri because I think that it takes at least a couple of viewings to fully take in everything going on in Thelma & Louise. A brilliant delivery of that one in particular from Harvey Keitel. John.

Oh dear, it looks like the usual suspects have been tinkering again! _Thelma & Louise_ predates digital colour grading, yet it has the obnoxious teal/orange palette of a contemporary picture. I don't know if it always looked this way, or if they have applied a filter for this new presentation, as they have done with so many others. Needless to say, I dislike it intensely. But assuming one can overlook this, the plot and acting are excellent.

Ernie Marsh has commented to say that he's not happy with the mastering so perhaps the Blu-ray is more representative of the 35mm release prints.
