@RobinOsborne23122 күн бұрын
I get what you mean about the screens on modern cars and mobile phones. Several years ago we had our brand new Jaguar parked outside the house, (off the road) when a van which was proven to be travelling at 50MPH (in a. 30MPH zone) swerved off the road and hit our car. It wrote off our new car, the van belonging to the kitchen fitter who was working at our house and the van which had caused the accident. It was later proved that the driver of the van was texting on his mobile phone. All of this tech is dangerous if used whilst driving.

Why I won't get an EV 1. Too expensive. Even £20k is too much for me. 2. Battery problems - range (affected by weather, lights, radio, heater, hills etc) 3. Risk of damage to battery by speed bumps or potholes (increasing) which will not be covered by warranty and insurers likely to write car off because of cost of replacement or repair. ( Limited number of garages able or willing to do repairs is limited). 4. EVs production is not "net zero". All we are doing is exporting cost to China which is still biggest polluter on the planet. EVs only begin to break even with ICEs after many thousands of miles of usage but they only make sense in cities where journeys are short. Cars are not likely to last sufficient time to make up the deficit. 5. I could only afford one car so it has to be available for longer journeys and the current charging infrastructure is rubbish : multiple suppliers with their own apps, broken chargers, queuing to use, time wasted charging, not knowing cost before charging). If we are to switch everyone to EVs the pressures on this infrastructure will grow. 6. The damage EVs will cause to car parks, bridges, road surfaces and in traffic accidents will be greater because of their weight. 7. I do not like the increasing use of electric gadgets and screens which I see as hazards not helpful. I appreciate you should be able to switch them off but the same argument applies to use of phones. People still use them because they can. 8. Insurance and servicing costs are greater than with an ICE. 9. Whilst home charging may save money if the govt lose revenue from sale of petrol/diesel they will make it up from road tax or increases in energy prices. 10. I don't trust politicians. They encouraged me to buy a diesel car and now sing a different tune. I am being greener than many by running my 15 year old diesel and Not buying a new car, EV or ICE.

The most dangerously distracting thing in a car is having a heated argument while driving, next is texting, then faffing with touch screens as the disappointment of them not working is highly distracting. At Christmas in 2010 I drove my diesel Dacia Logan MCV 1500 miles from my home in Romania back to the UK to spend ten days with my family. It was snowing all the way and I'd allowed four days due to the weather conditions and possible delays. My first overnight stop was in Hungary, second in Germany and I had planned a final stop in Belgium. However, I'd made good progress despite the weather and on arrival at the Channel Tunnel I was able to get onto a Shuttle 15 hours earlier than my booking. I'm sure that journey in an EV using wipers most of the time and heater all the time would have required at least six charging stops and possibly arriving late for the Shuttle which I was booked to travel on.

Add in the eye watering depreciation and the joke cost of replacing a set of tyres. I'll keep my 30 yr old Subaru Impreza WRX turbo Wagon thanks. 17 yrs and the biggest spend has been front brakes. Never let me down, reliable, everything still works, no fires. Plus, it's worth far more now than I paid for it. Some say having home solar is the way to go but in Australia if there is too much power into the grid they charge you money to accept it or even turn your solar off, And if that is not enough some politicians think it is a great idea if you plug your car into the grid at peak times to charge then if there is high demand they are looking to drain your EV to help the grid and that is the exact time you need power for the next day and can't afford to give any.
