there are some third party apps that can do it, but I prefer to sort it based on how frequently I use the site rather than by the alphabet which is a bit of an arbitrary sorting system... just because Amazon starts with an A doesn't mean I use it more than Yahoo or Zoom...

Unfortunately not an easy way that I have found. But if you start sorting your bookmarks you will quickly uncover the dupes and can easily delete them as you go.

There is no built in way to orgabize your bookmarks with the side menu like that, but you might find a third party app that can do it for you. 🤷‍♂️ Sorry... maybe in a future version.

Apple doesn't seem to organize bookmarks the way I like to organize them. I like to create "titled folders" of things I like in this big wide world. I will find a specific webpage I like and bookmark and SAVE it to one of those "titled folders" I mention previously. Could be HOUSE related/CAR related/REMODEL related...whatever I'm interested in. My issue is with this system...I have a list of 'folders' I've created but they're randomly organized and I would like them to be alphabetized!! To my knowledge...Safari ONLY allows Sort by Name/Address which doesn't effect BOOKMARKS!! Thoughts mac whisperer?

Hi, thanks for your great content! I was wondering if there is a possibility to drag and drop a URL directly into a subfolder in the favorite bar? In chrome, the subfolders open if I do a mouseover on one of the favorite bar folder, but not with safari.

So the short answer is not at the moment... before Safari 15 (released a few weeks ago) you could, but it seems the update broke that capability. Hopefully, they will bring it back. But the other way to do it is to press and hold the plus button to the left of the URL and select the sub-folder from the pop-up list. Sometimes it's even easier to do it that way.

Loved it! And I Subscribed. One thing that brought me to your above video, but you did not address... When I am editing my Bookmarks (adding folders in the sidebar) when I have a list of folders at the top of the sidebar, and I add a new folder, it places it at the bottom of all my current bookmarks on the list. Then when I try to drag it towards the top of the list to place it where I like, if I place it between two folders on the list, it forces it INTO one of those folders instead of BETWEEN them. I can't find how to prevent it from "indenting" as I drag, causing it to place the new bookmark folder INSIDE an existing folder instead of letting me place the NEW folder BETWEEN two existing folders. Can you help me with that?

Unfortunately it's just something you have to work at... In general if you move a little to the left it should allow you to put it in between rather than in... but it is definitely something you just have to practice at...

There are some third party apps that can do it, or you can export them to a csv file in excel, reorganize them alphabetically, delete them from safari and reimport them from the CSV… but for me, alphabetizing has never been necessary if you take the time to organize them and remove enough of the folders that you can see all of them across your toolbar at one time. To me alphabetizing is a lazy way to organize, and most people have way too many bookmarks to begin with.

It would be good to be able to see them alphabetically and also sort by date. Looking through 100 items to find one takes too long. AND . . . is there a search bar within on of my folders ? that would speed things up as well.

@@khit5561 You can search by going to the bookmark menu, selecting edit bookmarks, and in the upper right corner, there is a search bar. You might also consider subfolders in that folder to help find specific youtube videos easier.

How did you add the icon symbols underneath the bookmark bar?

Those icon symbols are actually what are called pinned tabs. That’s when you have a tab to a website open, and want to save it. You right click on the tab and choose to pin it. That way the website doesn’t use any resources, and doesn’t disappear when you close or quit Safari.

Not a built-in feature, but there are some third-party apps that do it. I am not a fan of organizing alphabetically though. It assumes that I use Amazon more than I use Zoom just because of the letter the website starts with. It seems valuable until you have 900 bookmarks and are scrolling for 20 minutes to get to the "Z" website you use 100 times a day. I prefer to manually sort and use folders to simplify it.

Here's how to easily sort a folder of bookmarks. Go to the bookmarks menu, and click edit bookmarks. Find the bookmark folder in that list, right-click on it, and choose "Sort by name".

Unfortunately Safari 15 does not offer a way to sort your bookmarks other than Alphabetically. There used to be a third party app called SafariSort that could do it, but it has been discontinued and is no longer supported. Sorry.

What you see are not actually large bookmarks on my screen. They are what is called "pinned tabs". When I have a website open that I need to access frequently, rather than leaving it open all the time I right-click on the tabs and Pin it, then it is always on the bar, ready for ne to click on without using up a ton of resources!!!

Try this In the Safari app on your Mac, click the Sidebar button in the toolbar, then click Bookmarks. To sort bookmarks in a bookmarks folder, Control-click the folder in the sidebar, then choose Sort By > Name or Sort By > Address.

In a word, I don’t. If you would like to (I find it relatively unnecessary since I have organized and cleaned my bookmarks out significantly) there are two ways to do it. There are some third-party apps that will do it for you, or you can export the entire bookmark list to CSV, open that in Excel, sort alphabetically there, delete them from safari, and then re-upload them from the CSV which will allow them to be alphabetized. But it will never keep it alphabetized so as you add new bookmarks you will have to manually organize them.

So the rule of thumb is if we can’t read it don’t add it to the Reading List. Which means photos of products from Amazon don’t get added to the Reading List. Also KZbin videos you want to watch later don’t get added either.

Right on again... the reading list is for reading. Everything else is a bookmark (hopefully neatly organized in a folder of similar bookmarks, like a KZbin folder could have all your youtube bookmarks in it.

Yes, of course. Provided you use Safari on all your devices, and the same iCloud account.... Go into settings (or system preferences) and into iCloud to confirm Safari is turned on and they should all sync effortlessly.

@@IAMSAEID Are you using Safari? What operating system is your iMac on? Under iCloud is Safari checked on (should be on for all the devices you want it to sync with). If it is already on for all of them, I would turn them all off, then turn on the iMac and ask it to merge, wait about 15 min then turn the other devices on. LMK if that solves it for you.

Those icons are actually just pinned tabs, when you have a tab open and you want to save it for later if you can right click on it and pin it. This prevents it from using your resources or getting lost when you close the page… Technically speaking it’s not a bookmark.

My problem is that I already have folders for bookmarks, I just have literally hundreds of bookmarks in several of these folders. Yeah, unfortunately we have to address the clutter first. Like I said in the video, you don't need bookmarks for everything anymore... no one needs a bookmark for Facebook or amazon. Just for specific pages or subpages that are hard to get to that you visit frequently. I suggest going to the bookmark editor and moving all your existing folders out of the favorites bar, then adding only the ones you are currently using back to the favorites bar... and cleaning them up was you go.

I get this question all the time, for me alphabetizing my bookmarks isn’t necessary because I use folders to create organization that is smarter than the randomness of alphabetizing. That being said, if you click on the bookmarks menu and then edit bookmarks, you can right click on your favorites or other sections of bookmarks and sort by name. This will put everything in order, but again in my opinion if you have so many bookmarks that you need the alphabet to know where to find them you have too many and should consider organizing them in a different way to make things simpler for you. But hopefully that helps.

So we don’t bookmark a website. Bookmarks are for a specific webpage from that website. For example, we don’t bookmark Wikipedia instead we can bookmark a webpage for an episode guide from a tv show.

Easiest way is to go to the bookmarks menu at the top of your screen, click edit bookmarks, and from that screen find the folder you want to delete, select it and simply press the delete button on your keyboard.

I sent took it to my authorized Apple dealer and he solved it in about 15 minutes. I have no idea what he did but the folders are gone. The name of the company is Experimax, in Clearwater, Florida.
