Cheapy Chinese carbide turning tools - are they any good? Watch to find out!
I’m chuffed to bits to say this video is sponsored by Banggood who provided me with some carbide turning tools last month to test out and make a video on.
I already buy loads of stuff from them so was very happy to be approached to do a video on some of their products and I’m hoping I can do a few more if they let me.

Well, I went and bought 3 of these chisels, I am really impressed with both the product and delivery time. I have only "tested" them so far, (I am totally new to turning) and still have a million things to know and learn. These chisels will make the journey so much easier.

I have not turned for several years. I am searching for a lathe here in Uganda that won't break the bank. I have also been looking at the different turning tools on the market. After watching your video I think I'll try the carbide trio. Thanks for the comparison you did. Expensive is not always best.

Thanks for watching! I've since switched to easy wood tools but honestly, they are only a tiny bit better for the money I still recommend carbides like these to new/rusty turners.

I have been wondering about the possible different qualities. This was a perfect vid for me. And it isn't just the difficulty in learning the non carbide tools, it is also the added cost for reasonable sharpening equipment. It can run another $200+ for the sharpening stuff. Then you have to learn that too. This way, you can turn and then maybe add the occasional classic tool into the mix.

I've just been shopping for carbide tools to start my turning experience. This was a timely video since I was looking longingly at the Easy Wood Tools. Maybe now I can afford a nicer chuck instead of investing all my money in premium carbide tools. Thank you for this video.

Honestly, I turn with traditional tools, but sharpening aspect is important to me, so after a beginner's set I got with premium stay sharp steels. But carbide? why not if I am doing a bow just use a square carbide boy? Or for hollowing use a little round guy? And from what I gather when the thing gets dull, just run it through the lapping stones, which I have from hand tool sharpening station. Seems like I do needs me some of these
@TheWoodgineer

Yup you can sharpen the carbides easily (not so much the negative rake though)

as to the comparing handles, the easy has much more wood in the handle, and around the tang of the tool where it matters more, but I thinjk the china ones will do the job for sure. as others have said,, not all the tips are interchangeable

BrainFizz meh I tried, they fit perfectly other than one thing; the grub screw. I’m sure one of the larger bits would fit though if the hole were enlarged and retapped.

I bought various carbide cutters to make my own turning tools. What I did find on my searches for cutters, is that they come not only in different shapes, but also the same shapes in different sizes. For example the square cutter comes 10mm 16mm , I gather the smaller cutters suit pen makers and the larger sizes for those doing larger work. The cutters come with their own torque screws, 3mm, 4mm, etc. or can be bought in packets of 10 screws. I have bought various sizes at different prices for comparison, however, as with all my metal lathes, milling machine carbide tooling/inserts etc. quality varies between manufacturers. Industry use the name brands, but for what work I do, the ‘imports’ work just fine. They are sharpenable as are those used for wood, by using either fine diamond flat lapping plates or various diamond impregnated cup wheels, all at very affordable prices from ‘imports’, a Google search soon find many sources and wide price ranges. The carbide tools certainly make it a low cost entry into wood turning, when compared to a set of decent quality HSS tools, plus all the sharpening equipment/tools etc.

Carbides are brilliant for starting out - get a square profile for roughing, round for smoothing and diamond for detail. Those 3 tools you can make almost anything :) Do yourself a favour though and check out some beginner tutorials before starting. Mike Waldt does some very good videos.
