Ackshually 🤓 pirates in real life rarely used big ships like galleons or frigates ( only popular known case is Blackbeard's ship Queen Anne's revenge, a frigate ). In reality, pirates prefer small ships like sloops or Brigs or ketch because of its speed, maneuverability and effective cost

@norml.hugh-mann
@norml.hugh-mann Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's amazing.. there are even more than you can causaually see as many are fastened to framing/masts and doubled/trippled/quadrupled up in same runs. It was one of the first tasks sailors learned was learning the name and use of EVERY rope as any one or multiples may need to be used in an emergency as fast as possible. Each sail has a rope(s) to hoist and also up to several for positioning the sail for maximum power and the fixed rigging as well all moved in accordance with ropes.. they were the veins of ships

@squarerigapprentice
@squarerigapprentice Ай бұрын
@@randomx4289 that’s a negative. She is over 200 years old and in quite a fragile state, she could never safely go to sea again. You would literally have to rebuild her from the keel up, which is basically a new ship, so you might as well build a replica if you want to sail her. They had to remove most of her rigging because the immense weight of it was causing her to deteriorate faster and faster. I believe they had to take her main bower anchors off the bows for the same reason. The anchors there now are fiberglass I believe. The life span of a wooden warship in the 18th century was typically between 20-30 years. Some of the more important and powerful ships like victory had extensive refits to keep them saiiling for 40-50 years but there comes a point where the structural Timbers get so old and the ship hogs and warps under her own weight that she will never be structurally sound as the design intended again. You can keep slapping new hull planking on but once the keel is sagging and frames are going soft it’s over for seagoing anyway. She is a wonderful museum though, and awe inspiring to see, even without her rig. I was aboard in 2016.
@albinliungman1093

I’m acquainted and have sailed on smaller ships with Björn Ahlander and Jens Langert who were both riggmasters during the construction of Gothenburg (the original sank this one is a replica). They were in charge of the design and construction of all the ropes and sails on board. It’s amazing to hear about the intricate mathematics when calculating the weight on each rope and how much thought goes into the seemingly chaotic amount of moving parts onboard. I recommend to everyone to also watch the documentary of Björns trop acrosa the northern Atlantic on the Viking king ship Draken Harald Hårfagre

@@Glenn-em3hv the Gotheborg and the Hermione are the closest you will ever get to that experience. Gotheborg is actually quite close dimensionally to some of the smaller ships of the line. Hermione is quite exciting to sail. We still needed over 30 people on the yard to furl the mainsail in any significant wind, her mainyard is 86 feet long, Victories was about 100, so a little bigger, she probably would have needed 45-50 to furl the mainsail. There are ways to experience this, you just have to seek them out.

It’s crazy how 500 years ago that men built boarded these ships to sail the world. They did it without modern conveniences like refrigeration, electricity, air conditioning, heat, GPS, phones, communications equipment, radar, sonar, weather reports, etc while only having primitive maps, rudimentary instrument, preserved foods, etc. It’s amazing. The suffering some endured after they got lost & ran out of provisions or into storms is difficult to imagine. One thing is for sure - modern conveniences & comforts have made us a lot softer & weaker. People endured constant hardship not too long ago & were tough as nails.😮🫤
